I hope someone can help me.

I read a book this past few months (I'm terrible at titles) about a fellow who played in the Yankees farm system, and a couple of games in the Majors. Unfortunately he had a mental problem (bi-polar), made worse by heavy drinking.

He was accused of murdering a girl or two (sorry to be noncommittal, just bad memory not indifference) and went to prison where he was denied medicine and got even worse. That was not a spoiler, we all knew he didn't do it.

Had a couple of sisters that loved him. Turned out it wasn't him and they let him go and he died a fairly broken man.

Does this light up a bulb for anyone? I want to recommend it.

No, I saw them while I was googling though.

It's definitely the Grisham one. Thanks for the help, editor!
