Memories of Alejandro De Aza

Our fifth outfielder was signed away today to a minor league contract by Oakland.

Had the good fortune of players getting hurt just when it looked like he was going to get released, and then getting hot just when it looked like the Mets might want to carry Nimmo and Conforto at the same time.

Had one good month and one very good month, and four pretty awful ones.

He should have changed it to de Aza in order to fit in with the team.

Or he could have played better. That would have been nice.

He had a difficult role to fill. Fans were predisposed to hating him for being the guy we signed as a Cespedes safety net and his early performance seemed to justify it.

He earned my admiration for overcoming that to eventually become the best player on the team (for 1 week only) but still. Screwed by fan bias and small samples.

Somehow simultaneously didn't get enough opportunities (only 267 PA!) and also got too many opportunities (267 PA?!), and delivered the worst season of his career. I expected more, but I guess it wasn't meant to be. I wish him well.

Historically, we do seem to get more than our share of Worst Season(s) of His Life, do we not?

I can't put my finger on why, exactly, but I kinda hated his swing.

For a while I thought of him as Almostandro de Aza, for every time he showed up in the frame, it was because he almost hit a ball out, almost got on base, almost made a catch. Game of inches will do that.

Not almost, but always hustled down the line. I appreciated that. A good player who took a while to show it. Vaya con Dios.

can't remember the game situation or point in the season, and definitely paraphrasing, but i did enjoy this Gary/Keith exchange:

Keith: Alejandro De Aza. That sounds like the name of a Spanish explorer Gary

Gary: It does

Keith: He has been playing like he is a Spanish explorer unfortunately

That's kind of a dis to Juan Ponce de Leon, who was a helluva ballplayer.

I wonder if Bartolo Colón is a descendent of Cristobal Colón.

Re: Memories of Alejandro De Aza

I was rough on this guy. I thought he was a waste of space. Not personally, just cause he was an outfielder whose role became taking games from other Mets OF's I was more fond of and wanted to see get more playing time. As far as I see & recall no mfc card, and you really have to do nothing for that to happen. Did smack 6 kaBOOMs though, and that's something. Good luck on the A's De Aza.
