How is this gonna work?

I really feel like we're not set up properly.

If Bruce actually makes it to opening day I guess you stash Conforto in Vegas and hopes he forces the issue? And what of Grandy? I'm not big on him centerfielding and would have though we actually try Reyes there, but this non-move makes that a more difficult thing to pull off. So it would look as though Reyes is more likely to become a bench guy, but maybe not ideal as a Grandy replacement with Lagares superior defensively? And who is the LH pinch-hitter?

Typical lineup vs. RHP
Granderson L CF
Cabrera R SS
Cespedes R LF
Bruce L RF
Wright R 3B
Duda L 1B
Walker SW 2B
dArnaud R C

-- Bench --
Lagares RH CF/LF/RF
Flores RH 3B/2B/1B/SS
Reyes SW 3B/SS/2B/OF??
Rivera or Plawecki RH C
Zimmo LH LF/CF/RF ??

Am I missing something? Is this lineup way too old?

Re: How is this gonna work?

I'd start with Reyes penciled in a 3b.

Re: How is this gonna work?

I sadly have no faith in penciling in Wright in 2017.
I'm not bullish on Mets-17, but if I push the envelope on my why's
and what's I'm sure I'd be told my face would freeze like that or I'm
a big-fat know nothing.

Re: How is this gonna work?

So you guys are saying, yet another RH bat on the bench or just expecting Wright to be available at all?

That might be how it plays out but not how they can plan for it at this stage. Assume health for the guys they got for this exercise.

I, again sadly, think Wright is done.
They can't plan for that with his contract right now, but they
should secretly be doing so. I'm cool with Reyes at third.
They really haven't done anything this off-season worth
burping about, but so have a not a lot of teams.

Re: How is this gonna work?

I don't know what we get from Wright, but given what his condition actually is, I'd more expect him to get 20 games right off the bat than show up randomly in the summer. It's the wear and tear and fatigue stuff that might keep him out. Regardless, they don't really need to do much to account for this. if he can't go, Reyes, and Flores against lefties, and you get one of those typical middle infield bench type guys to round out the roster and fit in call-ups as needed.

anyway, in my 'ideal' it's Cespedes, Lagares, Granderson left to right with liberal use of Conforto unless he falls off a cliff again, something hopefully we can judge in spring training, but obviously we're not going to limit Bruce to maybe 1 start a week and heavy pinch-hitting duties.

I don't really know how you work Bruce into that scenario though. I suspect he gets four of every six games in right field. Conforto gets the other two right field games and Lagares gets one of Granderson's day off in Center with the very occasional Cespedes day off to Conforto or Lagares depending on handedness.

Re: How is this gonna work?

Def older for the starters, but the youth of the reserves tends to balance that out some, and those guys should get plenty of time when the starters inevitably get hurt. I went to this website ->>> http://www.baseballheatmaps.com/disabled-list-data/

and quickly made a spreadsheet for those guys JCL listed below using their data. I have no idea if their data is accurate or if I copied/pasted it all right, but anyway. Like, David Wright had no DL days in 2014?? Man, Travis needs to stay on the field.

Re: How is this gonna work?

You think the likely 25 man opening day roster includes Nimmo but not Conforto? Did the Mets signal this?

Re: How is this gonna work?

I figured they'd prefer to have Conforto play every day so he can come up ready to take Grandy or Bruce's job when they get hurt or traded, or better yet, force the issue of his assignment by setting fire to PCL pitching.

Edit -- besides I'm asking you guys what you think is gonna happen. Who are your 13 guys?

maybe, that'd reinforce the "we're definitely going to play Bruce, we're not desperate to trade him" angle.

Who are my guys, or who are Terry's guys?

Terry's roster:

Wright
Reyes
Flores
Cabrera
Walker
Duda
d'Arnaud
Plawecki
Bruce
Granderson
Lagares
Conforto
Cespedes

Re: How is this gonna work?

I agree with Ceetar's roster, with one exception: I think it will be Rivera over Plawecki.

OK, Terry how do you deploy this group?

Re: How is this gonna work?

Answered that up above I think. Infield is Duda, Walker, Cabrera everyday with Wright and Reyes basically 'splitting' Third. probably a 2:1 ratio.

Re: How is this gonna work?

Are we guessing what Terry's doing, or doing what WE would do AS Terry?

Give me a Cespedes/Granderson/Conforto/Lagares rotation, with 6 starts/5 starts/4 starts/4 starts respectively, per week. Give Bruce whatever's left-- 1-3 starts a week, and primary PH duty.

I'd like a similar rotation for Wright/Reyes/Cabrera/Walker, though I suspect-- f'ing shocker!-- injuries will ease the playing-time squeeze there.

Re: How is this gonna work?

I'm beginning to think about why Colon may have left. He would have had a heart attack from all the running to back up third base on any fly ball hit in the gap to a Cespedes, Granderson, Bay outfield.

Re: How is this gonna work?

my preference:

[u:1qlhw8nl]vs RHP:[/u:1qlhw8nl]
Reyes+ (3b)
Granderson* (cf)
Walker+ (2b)
Cespedes (lf)
Bruce* (rf)
Cabrera+ (ss)
Duda* (1b)
d'Arnaud (c)
----------------
R.Rivera (c)
Lagares (oF)
Flores (iF)
Wright (3b)
Conforto* (oF)
TJRivera (uT)

[u:1qlhw8nl]vs LHP:[/u:1qlhw8nl]
Reyes+ (rf)
Wright (3b)
Cespedes (lf)
Flores (1B)
Walker+ (2b)
Cabrera+ (ss)
d'Arnaud (c)
Lagares (cf)
---------------
R.Rivera (c)
Duda* (1b)
Granderson* (oF)
Bruce* (rf)
Conforto* (oF)
T.Rivera (uT)

* If Wright comes off the DL to start the season, he should be platooned (at most) with Reyes at 3b, since his inadequacy against RHP has continued to worsen over the years. Also, his fragility (and frequent unavailability) will require a 14th man, with 11 pitchers (which i would prefer anyway). Kelly might be preferable to TJRivera as that extra UT guy, only in so far as he's a switch-hitter, and without him we'd have only 1 LH hitter on the bench (against RHP starters). But overall, i'd probably prefer to keep TRivera and live with 1 LH pinch-hitter. Actually, i'd prefer to see Wright just retire and keep both Rivera and Kelly (or another LH bat), and just play Reyes at 3b full time. Plus Rivera can spell Walker against some LHPs, where Walker is usually vulnerable. And overall I would just prefer to have TJ Rivera on the bench (with his live bat and positional flexibility) than a 7th reliever in the pen;

* I see Granderson, Duda and Bruce as basically platoon players now, playing against RHPs (with Wright in a platoon against LHP), and i'd prefer to give their ABs against LHPs to Flores, Lagares and Wright (or T.Rivera), with Reyes in the lineup everyday, since we have no other viable leadoff hitter;

* I think they should keep Conforto up because he's proven he can tear up AAA, and i think there will ultimately be an injury, trade or sustained lack of production among Bruce, Granderson and/or Duda that will give him everyday ABs somewhere. But if they decide to start him in AAA, i think Nimmo's the LH bat off the bench (or Kelly); and

* R.Rivera will catch once a week. Plaweck? Puhleeze. He has to go to Vegas and prove he can hit (to the extent that hitting in Vegas proves anything).
