Ottoneu 2017

Guys we need to find a way to break the league into divisions so that there's more for everyone to play for. This isn't the 1962 National League. Also, metsmarathon should respond to my very generous trade proposal before I change my mind.

would be nice. I guess we could explore an alternate site but I'm not seeing one that is obviously better either. Though I guess if someone wanted to keep track of it we could manually set up divisions. Scoring is the same anyway, I don't know how you'd resolve the champion that way though.

hey, so, anyone feel like being an alternate for running the draft? (3/22, 9pm) This just means clicking the 'start draft' button on time once everyone has shown up (or grace period), and pausing if there are issues. My second child is due on 3/15. There's a reasonable chance that I'm not super available on any given day in March with no warning whatsoever.

I'll do the draft night duties. We'll need to make sure everyone has paid their dues and such before hand. I believe that has caused issues in the past.

Um, I just found out I gotta be traveling for work on the 22nd, likely to be on a plane while the draft takes place. Is there any way we could do the 23rd or even the 21st? Otherwise I could try fly-fi.

If I dont' hear from either of them by the time I get to work tomorrow and settle in, gonna put out feelers for replacements. There's an Ottoneu slack group too, might poke my head in and see if there are people around that might want to do a 'practice' auction as a stand-in in case we can't get everyone. I figure there must be people out there with time that don't mind seeing what players go for in prep for their own auctions?

all i've ever played is the free Yahoo fantasy leagues, so i have no idea what i'm supposed to do. I've never actually participated in an auction-style draft. Do i pay actual money? how much? when? to whom? what are the rules of the draft and the league? When? Where? Who? How? and sometimes why?

You need a fangraphs account, and then a $10 Ottoneu league purchase. [url]https://ottoneu.fangraphs.com Technically the spot isn't "open" yet so I'm not entirely sure how it works to sign up without a league ,or if you just pick a league and I pull you in. Auction draft is pretty simple. Basically you've got a $400 salary cap and 40 players. at 9pm on either teh 22nd or the 23rd we take turns nominating a player from the pool and it's open season on people clicking +$1 or putting in a price. after 10 seconds of no activity, high bid gets the player. It's a keeper league so if you super overpay for a player you're going to end up cutting him next season probably, and you want to reserve money/spots for in-season chinese/blind auctions. Scoring categories are (OBP, SLG, HR, R and ERA, WHIP, HR/9, K) You get 12 points for leading one of the categories, 11 points for being second, etc. 12 person rotisserie style league.

so what's happening here? is vic taking over initech, or GGLDM? i'm so confused! and when is our draft anyways? --- also worth noting is that when you cut a player, you are responsible for 50% of his salary until someone else picks him up, or until the end of the season. so if you are taking over the deathship, and you were to, for whatever reason, cut $63 Mike Trout, you'd still be on the hook for $32 until he joined another team.

GGLDM is supposed to be renewing but hasn't gotten to me. Vic is hopefully taking over initech our draft is 70% Wednesday, 30% chance of Thursday.

I've gotten blowback on both Thursday and Tuesday and I'm not particularly hopeful blowing it all up and trying to find a new convenient date. We could try to find a sitter maybe? Actually, I just tabulated all the responses I got and it does seem like Thursday is better, though I worry non-responders might not be good for that date and are just lazy about telling me and could lead to a hissy fit.

There's an "available owners" list on Ottoneu of players looking for a league so I'll probably just grab someone randomly. I should briefly screen them though. Sample questions? Roger Clemens is ____? The ___ will win the World Series. Captain America's real name is _____?

I kind of like just playing against y'all. to be fair we're only at 7/12 Crane Poolers at the moment anyway. well, 7/11. I don't think it's a big deal if no one claims the team, but it'd be nice if _someone_ played. At the very least make the team more competitive for next year because if we just go without, it'll be tough to have someone join with an empty team against all our keepers.

it's conceivable that i could wind up m.e.t.b.o.t. and have him run his draft from a second computer... though last time i tried that it didn't work out so well for my primary team. for the record, my plan would be to use the average player salary for our league as his max bid, and also establish a set number of salary bins for the 'bot so he doens't just end up with a bunch of $30 players and $1 scrubs... though i may see if i could recruit a mets fan that i work with. that would probably be better!

Yes. anyone that knows someone that might want to play ,reach out! hell, even if they just want to play with the auction draft. I'd rather have the 12th team at least drafting and having a roster so that we could presumably pick it up next year if we had to, without having to figure out if we need to have an expansion draft or something.

I don't think we can let someone in after, with all the real players taken, if that happens, I dunno.. I feel like if we don't have someone by draft time I should release all his players though. It's open to random people. Anyone that wants to claim the team can claim the team. The team's already pretty bad, but a team starting from scratch in 2018 against keeper teams is pretty hopeless. If that happens I think we all have to agree to give the new team a player or something in advance, but we'll worry about this then.

i love it when a plan falls completely to hell. had all my draft prep on my one computer, which failed to load at all during hte draft. boo. good thing i wasn't relying on that computer to play the part of m.e.t.b.o.t.! it would be tempting to spin up the 'bot to see how well he could do with picking up the pieces of the draft... there are still some useable pieces out there. and if the team were managed even a little, it could form the foundation for some future team to come in and not suck mightily for ever. or we could figure out how to run an expansion draft...

i think that it's worth figuring out hte parameters now, and getting league input, too. before we need to. each team protects X number of players, and the expansion team gets to pick Y number of players overall. and what happens when one of your players gets picked? is there a maximum number of players you can pick off a given team? and when would we run the expansion draft? what if an owner crops up in-season? it's easier if we do it in the off-season, but that's no panacea either... if we wait to figure it out until we need to figure it out, we won't have time to figure it out until it's too late.

If someone picks up the team mid-season then we do nothing and just go with it. (though to be fair I'd let them cut all the players I filled the team with for free. Barry Bonds, Tim Wakefield, etc) My initial thought is just to spread the love around. Everyone can protect 3 players, the new owner would take 1 player from each team. They'd start with 11 players and I think that's a fine number. I'd want to do this before the keeper deadline.

I believe irl expansion drafts allow clubs to protect 15 guys each plus another three for every guy picked up to 35. We could probably set the first number to 10 and still give the expansion club a good start.

i think the correct number would be closer to 10 than 3. i mean, if i could seed my team with the 4th best player from each team, well, hell, i might just drop my own team and pick up initech at the end of the year! if i just look at the 4th best player on each team, you'd get the following: Cory seager | albatrosses Carlos Carrasco | Assassins Jose Bautista | Baconators Edwin Encarnacion | Deathship Andrew Miller | Lunchladies Jose Altuve | Monks Lance McCullers | Red Flyers Mookie Betts | Chickens Rich Hill | smg58 Carlos Gonzalez | Snukes Aroldis Chapman | Devil Toads that's a hell of a team to start with - where do i sign up? 11th best player on each team still gives a solid lineup. i haven't gone all the way through it, but it'd still be a decent seed to plant. especially if it runs through like a full expansion draft. the real challenge would be how to run it efficiently and quickly.

except anybody he gets that a real good value, will continue to be a real good value next year, and if he's smart and good and a little lucky, he could easily build a juggernaut for next year, if we let him slide this year. fairly bid on the waiver wire guys you could use, or have interest in, i say. there's no reason he should get every guy for a buck. also, if you want to be able to get literally ANY decent mid-season waiver wire pickups, you should probably bid him up now.

You gotta monitor the auctions as I know only too well by losing every in-season bidding war I've ever entered. I just threw a couple bid s up on guys I figure I could use (or trade) and who at any rate valued more than $2 (which is basically MAX offer on anyone, given my current budget) But I hate to see any opponent get a good thing without having to pay through the nose for it. Unless I hate the player, I bid every name up in the draft and only wound up this year with one high bid I might have preferred to be outbid on (Estrada at $6). I'm sure all the GMs hate Sandy for getting Reyes for the real-world equivalent of a $3 Ottoneu salary, you know? There's a bunch of $1 players on auction right now with bid expiring around 1 p.m. today and early tomorrow. Not suggesting collusion here, but a few thoughtful bid ups could triple this guy's payroll. It's a good strategy. Go!

I just threw a couple bid s up on guys I figure I could use (or trade) and who at any rate valued more than $2 (which is basically MAX offer on anyone, given my current budget) you can tell if someone's bid?

well, i managed to snag a fairly superfluous joe panik... he should significantly overperform his $6 salary, though i'm not entirely sure how much playing time i'll be able to give him. i need to offload an anchor first.

The whole thing is like, totally hands off it'll autodraft you a team of brand-name superstars or if you take 5 minutes to arrange a list of favorites, try and pick your favorites for you automagically.

What the hell is going on in this league? 3 weeks ago I was trying to start a Fire Sale (Ceetar never responded to a generous trade offer to kick it off) this morning I'm a half-point out of first place, which is as close as the Lunchladies have ever been this deep into a season (top 5 teams are very close right now) and I forgot to activate Matz yesterday. My thought was, "these other teams couldn't possibly suck as much as mine does" but I guess you do. All that said, open to offers on intriguing property in exchange for same and where I can I save a buck. In general I'd like an elite shortstop and have homer-hitting first basemen up the wazoo

I'm actually thinking of giving up fantasy altogether after this season.

There was a point in the season when I had 8 pitchers on the DL and another one suspended. But until yesterday I had spent the last two weeks in first place. As Joe Walsh once said, I can't complain but sometimes I still do.

i gotta say, i miss having kershaw.... though he wouldn't necessarily solve my pitching staff, he sure wouldn't hurt it right now. my staff is so completely and utterly revamped from the start of the season, that it kinda hurts my head. bottom line, i suppose, is that i'm glad i stuck with severino. heck, my offense has seen a hell of a lot of turnover as well. I've currently got so, so many decent cheap slugging outfielders and 1bmen that i really cannot play them all. i mean, shit, i've got miggy cabrera sitting on my damn bench and he's my most expensive player!

yeah, man. there's a lot of dollars still out there burning a hole in every team's pocket. at this point, you probably have to pay double what a guy is probably worth in the draft, or just hope to get really lucky. is there a type of player you might be in particular need of? i'm developing a bit of a surplus of players. btw... please don't quit fantasy. you're the commish of my favorite fantasy league, dangit!

Well congrats to Easton. I actually thought I had a shot, was in 2nd place and gaining in late August but in the end I was let down by the infield (Seager and Kinsler had terrible years, relatively speaking). The idea with the Scherzer trade was to get the payroll back into shape, hope I hung on in the pitching categories (which I mostly did) and gain in OBP and SLG, which was way out of whack with my RS and HR production. The OBP did tick up but not enough; and I gave it back on SLG. 4th place again. We badly need divisions!
