When I was starting out, 90% of my mistakes were ISO related.

That's the beautiful thing about digital photography - you check your shots, see the problem and have the chance to fix it before taking further shots.

..unless your chasing a toddler around a playground.

But normally ,yeah. I just wish there was some machine learning built into the software (hire me!), even on shutter priority. If it was on auto the camera would know 3200 ISO is a ridiculous setting for the light, no reason it can't do something about that. Especially since it's literally already doing a calculation and checking to see if there's enough light to prompt you to put on the flash.

How you can tell it's time to send in your camera for servicing -

Apparently the Nikon d750 has a known issue concerning the shutter mechanism. When I entered my serial number on the website they said that my camera was covered, so they will fix it for free even though the warranty on the camera has expired. Hopefully the repair process won't take too long - I already have the shakes worrying about sending it to them.

Nikon indeed repaired the camera for free, and it just arrived on my doorstep. I give credit to Nikon for recognizing the camera, repairing it and returning it to me in a timely manner.

There are two ways.

If you post publicly on a site like Flickr, you go to that site, go to All Sizes, choose a reasonable size, right-click to get the URL for the jpeg, and surround it by

[ img ]

and

[ /img ]

(without all of the spaces)

Or if the image is on your computer, go to the bottom of the page and go through the Upload Attachment protocol.

Re: Say Cheese! (2017 Edition)

so, once again, it's that time of year where i curse my procrastination and scramble to try to get togther an entry to the new jersey state fair | sussex county farm & horse show "photography in sussex county competition.

this year, i have a few candidates, and need some objective opinionating!

category: Architecture? or still life? it's a statue of princess white deer, at lake mohawk

category: flowers, because everybody loves hazy cherry blossoms in the fading golden light of sunset

category: flowers. because everybody loves cherry blossoms falling

category: still life, because blueberries

category: action/sports, because splashing

category: portrait, because aww...

caterogy: portrait, because double-aww...

i'm leaning towards the first two (i can enter a maximum of two), but am open to alternative suggestions. the splashing is also a top contender.

Re: Say Cheese! (2017 Edition)

I love the splashing. I love the blueberries. I think the second cherry blossom shot is better than the first (I don't love the haziness).

Consider this one for a portrait submission, because I am in love with the expression in it -

Re: Say Cheese! (2017 Edition)

I like the leaves falling and the splashing best i think.

I think I'd give the last one the best shot to win, if that matters.

I don't think my next homebrew will be ready for fair submission. I've been slacking. That's obviously unrelated to this :-D

you know, i think you're right about that µmmR portrait. i think i skipped over it because i just took the darned thing.

the splashing is tempting because minimm got me an honorable mention last year.

i really like the silhouetted statue, but i'm not sure how well it'll come out when i have it printed... (especially since, well, it's late in the game and i've gotta get it done at freaking CVS)

Re: Say Cheese! (2017 Edition)

Don't enter the splashing, because no faces = no expression/emotion.

I would lean towards 1 and 3. The silhouette is just well done, and the falling cherry blossoms offer a unique perspective.

The last one is great, not just because of the lighting, but the just out of focus castle is perfectly framed showing location.

i submitted the silhouette and hte cherry blossoms falling.

side note: i really need to do better than 1-hr quick printing at CV-fucking-S. like, if i'd thought of it a day earlier, i could've had the prints professionally done and matted and everything, which i think could only help. instead of actively hurting, like CVS and my shitty mats.

why am i so mad at CVS?

well, i should be mad at myself. because they auto-crop to fit on 8x10. the falling cherry blossoms were the most unaffected, as they clipped off the extraneous blossom on the left, and the dogwood on the right, leaving an altogether cleaner photo, i think.

the silhouette move rightwards in the frame as the blue space on either side was trimmed. still good, but not as much so.

and because of CVS, i coudln't really think of entering either portrait. with the twins together, the castle is barely in the shot, and most of µmmL's cheek is cut off. the photo of µmmR alone crops off hte space around his elbow and head, to the point here his eye is just about at the edge of the frame.

ugh.

maybe i'll save them for next year, unless i shoot some better photos in the meantime.

i'm really putting the amateurish in the amateur division....

Re: Say Cheese! (2017 Edition)

Where do you typically print?

Can't you/couldn't you have edited the pictures to be 8x10 yourself, by adding some black space on the top or left or whatever, and then cut the picture after it was developed?

metsmarathon
Jul 25 2017 05:14 PM
Re: Say Cheese! (2017 Edition)

it needed to be a minimum 8x10. so i would've had to print it out 11x14 (not as easy to come by on 1-hr notice!) and then crop it. and then it wouldn't have fit into my re-used mats (because i suck so hard i can't stand myself)>

the photo shop that i dropped off my entries at helpfully mentioned that, y'know, we do printing and mounting here at the store so think of us next time maybe huh? which, yeah, that would have been a better idea!

I don't think Millennials are known for printing pictures. It's us/you Gen Xers that want to print all the blurry iPad pictures of the (grand)kids now that everyone has a camera.

I'm not driving out to Sussex County (well, maybe, there are breweries there I need to hit) for photo prints when there is a Walgreens between home and daycare, but do the small print shops really have better equipment for printing? besides the sizing issue. Walgreens does true digital 4x5.3, but doesn't go above 8x10 for same day looks like. What size were yours actually? And on the nerdier side, why aren't all photos the same size? why did digital become 4.53 instead of 4.6?

Ceetar wrote:

It's not the equipment per se, but how it's used. I have a small shop out here (the owner is a professional photographer and also does prints, passport photos, holiday cards, etc.), and the owner is excellent at optimizing the images before printing them out. Not merely cropping, but exposure, etc. Whenever I have entered photos in exhibitions this is where I've had my images printed.

Re: Say Cheese! (2017 Edition)

They crop and touch up the images? that's nice I think? I just googled my 'local'. The Picture Spa in Ridgewood. seems like I can upload online, they've got an 11x14 and a 12x18. That's cool. and does 'fit to page' so like this image wouldn't get awkwardly cropped:[fimg=600:36x1rik6]https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/JUwKb949KCdI3ZYy9WuijGG9WRdsfgFvlmeCBku58FOMvn2iBoaRTXfPsNpT8ut5xOaA1pTsi87ASRwnT4f7D7t2u--ht0_Mwy5fY_G7YDIRRNbAlYaOXstwQSqnjxR-0_7SbRHWv_6d5r5jbbfpRWzebAXFQQUH9U9UEduRAYvL959D_2psblsJBDsuGoQG55mg1avwKvZLC8uw9PSVfREQncSJVnHY2TXizowu6rHHpuvgb4W_9fAw4zibCgiltAs3abOJ1KLRdJ7zAcif8G3ytYXrpkYFqlp_eWpnT75cXr2e8Z5PBXSr2v9kN2HZTdT6fk87pEsuvcqK_TRyXs7zI4LleX47d28nKQ1p_IFR0x7qugEXzuylQEQi9MMsi_ODtbnpozfS4zIxKmOghrX2aF2Y4dQIKy5Bj6Jeu94op9yzpp4WwuYqvq4Ubv3OxHR4A0gxZMmanSS2lvwA4tPk15EUXbv9cMNZgsW5db_9JnsSiTC86Y9Q71oQjDLAgSjCkBCIpNo-NmPq8PkuCoyoNxiRWNFQpvHpgoQ5RuoYVFPgi8KIbz58VlQ9knr_e37yYVV1aLL8GyvqYrbn3chi39OzA-5HOiZyw96fpPkTFON9ft7MnA=w1364-h721-no[/fimg:36x1rik6]
