Inauguration Day 2017

Twenty-five years from now, will people be saying, "where were you on
January 20th, 2017 around noon time?"

(I'll be 79, but hope to still be around)

Where were you on 1 BT? the exact date may be lost to history.

I'll be at work doing nothing, but probably a good time to take lunch and ignore the world.

Re: Inauguration Day 2017

I'm guessing he'll make at least three faux pas tomorrow that the
national news (not FOX) will be all over for two days.

The real spirit of the thread is will it be worthy of remembering
as something 25 years from now like, "where were you when the
space shuttle blew up" like the Trump presidency blew up?

Dumb thread, feel free to nuke it or lock it or let it fall off the end.

Yeah, that's why I rewrote the timeline. This will be during 1BT (Before Trump) because I figure it takes a year to steer the world into full catastrophe that defines the zero-year event.

It'll mostly be boring though. It's such a long/dedicated speech it'll probably have been sanitized anyway. Not a ton of opportunity to talk off the cuff so, like it has been the few times he spoke like that, it'll probably be dull and full of the bland, if still ridiculous and destructive, things the administration hints they want to do to the country.

And then he's planning on taking the weekend off so we'll see what he tweets.

My daughter in law, who knows a thing or two about politics, told me to keep his TV ratings lower, instead of just keeping the TV off, put it on a cable station that doesn't even mention politics, even if you don't watch it. So I've got Andy Griffith on. He's bowling with Howard.

Re: Inauguration Day 2017

I'm not sure how that works these days. I know that years ago, the only people who affected the ratings were those who either had a box attached to their TV by Nielsen, or those who kept journals of what they watch. Now, however, most viewers have a box of some kind. I have TiVo, and they can tell what I'm recording, and they might be able to tell what I'm watching, but I'm less sure about that. They know what channel each of my six tuners are on, but they can't tell if the TV is on or not. I know they issue reports of "live watching" but I'm not sure how they can tell if anyone is watching. Companies like Verizon and Comcast who provide a DVR may also be able to do something similar.

I'm working from home today. If it was Hillary getting inaugurated, or Jeb Bush, or Marco Rubio, I'd have the TV on to watch the transfer of power. But not today. Not with this asshole becoming president. I'll keep my head (figuratively, and perhaps even literally) in the sand.

This is happening. It is real. As an American, I don't feel like I can look away. Not convinced their are really things worth my effort. things stacked against real reform. I have no faith in the democrats to stand up for anything significant because most of them would rather ride the ride and stay in power. It's easy for them too, as the minority. They can make loud noises about objecting to please voters and then still get out-voted and keep their jobs.

Money in politics is such a huge problem but it's spending money investing in loud screaming challengers to incumbents that's going to make any difference.

This. Mainly because stomping your feet and whining about it does nothing.

Look, elections have consequences and that's true whether you approve of the result or not. It's also one of the reasons why those on the left who either applauded or stood silently by when Obama over-reached with some of his executive actions should have realized that it could come back to bite them instead of believing that being in the big chair somehow translates into being there in perpetuity, but that's sort of a side issue right now.
But those who over-reach get tend to get spanked at mid-term time so if he's "not your president" then start working towards that end and also at the local level. It sure beats the hell out of giving up because you've decided that the guy in the WH is going to dictate every aspect of your life for the next four years.

There's gonna be a zillion worst days ever. Each one worse than the last. Wait until he starts signing Executive Orders. Wait until every one of his Cabinet picks go through because the Dems are powerless to do anything to stop them. Wait until he names Scalia's replacement. Wait until he starts filling the 100 or so lower court openings that the GOP stole from Obama. Merrick Garland wasn't the first judge to get Merrick Garlanded. Or the second. Or the 50th.

Nice. I know from social media that LFWS and Wolfie marched, too. Anybody else get out today?

Wasn't sure what to expect in Albuquerque. It was cold, some rain and snow, and temps in the 30s/40s, but they reported we beat Denver (our little rival, I guess) and we had 10K in attendance. It was a great event and the most important message was basically "today is great and all, but what are you doing tomorrow?" There was a pretty decent amount of calls to participate more locally, school board elections, council meetings, etc. There was one voter registration booth and it sadly got one plug all day. I would've liked to see them mention that every 20 minutes and really, really encourage people to sign up for shit and meet people to organize with since we're right there. But otherwise a solid B+ grade.

Headed downtown with wifey and the girl. Met with packed-- PACKED-- streets. So packed, I could smell about a half-dozen strangers' conditioner and face cream at any given moment. So much crowd overflow that police barriers flanking the first half of the march route were completely overrun about an hour or two in, and two adjacent avenues were more or less shut down when the crowd listed toward Fifth Avenue.

But... it was maybe the most polite, courteous, goodvibes-filled large gathering of folk (10K-plus category) I've ever attended. Invigorating and inspiring... even more so if we can continue to channel this into action, intersectional or otherwise.

Today's anti-Trump protests were certainly encouraging. It's a start, I suppose. Don't know how they're gonna stop Trump from flooding the lower courts with extreme right-wing idealogues. Same for Scalia's seat.

The protests also got me to wondering what the result would be if the Elections were done over and held this coming week, with the voters knowing everything we know as of today? I was also wondering just how many of today's protesters didn't vote at all on Election Day. Or how many Jill Stein voters from the so-called battleground or swing states now regret their wasted vote? Democrats are typically, not as determined as GOP'ers to vote.

Democrats are typically, not as determined as GOP'ers to vote.

it'd be the same without having actually faced the threat of Donald Trump as a reality and not just a crazy possibility.

But I think this march will be more about mitigating damages than fixing any of the myriad of reasons we're here. Resistance is great, but when are we going to fix the district lines? The illegal voter suppression stuff? the job abandonment tactics of avoiding approving Merrick? The broken two party system this discourages millions of people from voting if they don't like the one candidate that comes somewhat close to representing their beliefs?

Don't get me wrong. I loved the protests. I wish there'd be more of them tomorrow. And on Monday. Disrupt the work-day. Raise hell.

Nice. I know from social media that LFWS and Wolfie marched, too. Anybody else get out today?

I was at work, but several people from work marched, as did our friend and her sister.

And, someone I have known since the days of the old DTFC baseball board is in the Air Force. His unit was at the Washington CD march. Here is his report.

My Inaugural day began as I arrived at our staging point at 1:45 AM. We then sat around until almost 3 when we loaded the buses and moved to a larger staging point in DC where we went through TSA security screening and the busses were inspected. TSA was actually the most efficient part of this whole mess. We finally got to leave there at 8:15, we were supposed to be in our final staging and warming point next to the parade route by 7:30. The plan was we would have breakfast then go out to for the cordon. We instead unloaded from the buses and immediately formed up and marched out onto Pennsylvania Avenue. I was a cordon NCO, so was in charge of about 9 individuals. My position was at roughly the intersection of Constitution Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue right in front of the Canadian Embassy. I am not able to get a high enough resolution look at the picture below but I am either on the very left side of it or just out of the picture on the left side.

While we were waiting for the President and President Elect to travel from the White House to the Capitol Building I had an individual have to break ranks because she hadn't eaten and was about to pass out. So I called medics and ended up escorting her to a medical station. To get there we had to cross the police line and barricades and a large group of protesters. This group was quite peaceful in comparison to many of them that were out there. It was determined she was okay and she was cleared to go back out to the cordon. We got back into position about 10 minutes before the presidential motorcade came through. The motorcade was traveling very quickly as there were several disturbances closer to the White House. We then marched into our warming and feeding location in the FTC, where we finally got breakfast at 11:30. We were able to watch the swearing in and some of the other televised coverage before we formed up to march back out at 1:30. We were told we would salute the President and Vice President as they traveled back to the White House and then we would roll up before the parade if at all possible. However, I made sure everyone I was in charge of knew and we're prepared to salute the Colors as they passed because I didn't believe for a second we would get off of the street before the parade.

History will prove me right as the parade started with Trump still at the Capitol Building. The amount of security surrounding the presidential motorcade was quite impressive. I was not surprised by the boos for Nancy Pelosi but was when Justice Ginsberg received even more vitrol. Trump is a larger individual than I thought. He looked Uuuge in the Limo. Mike Pence seemed very personable waving and giving the thumbs up as he passed. As soon as his portion of the parade passed and we had a gap the Air Force element rolled up again and we marched back to our busses. While we were rolling up they were telling us on the radio to return to our positions but we were done at that point as it was after 5 pm. I had also been talking to the element leader and we were determined that we just wanted to make sure we didn't look stupid doing whatever we did because we were truly flying by the seat of our pants, so we just kept marching off like we knew what we were doing. The crowds really got into cheering us as we passed. When we got on the busses they had cold sandwiches for us. We sat there for about half an our before we got clearance to leave, and my day officially ended about 7pm.

All in all it was a great experience and I'm honored to have had the chance to be there and take part in it.

Sorry, Ash, but this is a load of crap. There were probably dozens of people in Bill's field of view there. That video "proves" nothing.

Hilary is not happy with him for a moment, that part seems true.. The rest speculation.

I wouldn't particularly conclude that either.

I mean, even if you conclude that she's unhappy—and she never seems like a particularly happy duck to me, even (especially?) when she's trying real hard to be—she has about 1,574 reasons to be unhappy.

This just seems like a counter narrative somebody is trying to push into the zeitgeist to take any small bit of the limelight off of the farcical inauguration.

The missus and I were also at the NYC march. We left at the turn up 5th Avenue - by then it was around 6pm and there were still thousands behind us.

Trump's visit to the CIA horrified pretty much everyone except his traveling applause crew. You don't stand where he stood and talk about that you've been on the cover of Time Magazine more than anybody else (spoiler alert- he lied). There were 117 stars on the wall behind him that were more important than his bullshit propaganda about his inauguration attendance numbers. He doesn't really understand this whole Presidenting thing.

Branding strategy suggestion: dress up any evidence-based science you're presenting to the Adminstration/any Cabinet agency in shredded jeans and guitar-distortion; pitch it to fortysomething staffers as "modern facts."
