Buzzworthy Buzzbands - Live and Sweaty 2K17

All-time low in live music outings in 2016. I generously counted 10 (including a local band, a Pat Benatar show at an Indian casino with my aunt, and an accidental viewing of Arrested Development (awesome!!!) at some bar in Denver). I also bailed on 3 shows I bought tickets for. Determined to right that wrong this year.

So far on the calendar:

Willie Nelson & Family
The Shins
Radiohead!!!
Brian Wilson presents Pet Sounds: The Final Performances

Determined to get 10 legit shows this year.

Which relevant, buzzworthy buzzbands are you planning to see this year?

So far I'm seeing Billy Joel twice - once at MSG and once at the newly renovated Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

I'm also seeing Bruno Mars in September in Newark.

We're gonna see Wesley Stace's "Cabine of Wonders" next month, which I think might include some Jayhawk action.

I was gonna get Tom Petty tixx for the summer (Forest Hills tennis stadium) but I came up against sticker shock on $150 tickets. I can't do it!

Tom Petty is on my bucket list along with Springsteen. Prince was on the list, but then he went and died last year before I got to see him.

I'm planning on seeing Petty in July in Milwaukee...though "lawn" seats at the amphitheater there are only about $70. I don't know how I would feel about more than double that. Prince's death solidified that I was going to make a big effort to see Petty this year.

Re: Buzzworthy Buzzbands - Live and Sweaty 2K17

Sure, if you love Petty. Saw him in the early 90s and again in 2014 as a Bonnaroo headliner. Real good and all, but $125 is kinda steep for me. But I just happily forked over $110 for Radiohead, so whatever.

I noticed the other day that they are playing at Tarrytown Music Hall on

If anyone is interested in a meet up lmk and I'll look into tickets. It's a
great place to see a show and Metro North Hudson line easy. (6 minute

I dunno. I paid $180 to see AC/DC (with Axl, even) and felt like they delivered a fair amount for the price.

Then again, floor seats at Shea Stadium for the Rolling Stones set me back just $30 when I was in high school (Steel Wheels tour, 1989).

Of course, back then, musicians still made money on album sales. It's a brave new world.

I'd have a tough time coming home and facing reality after dropping that much money on Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, and I think he and Benmont and Campbell are terrific.

As for making money off the sales of music, that's a global tragedy and one that could be fixed if our gummint wasn't so damned dysfunctional.

Re: Buzzworthy Buzzbands - Live and Sweaty 2K17

It's both, but mostly the latter. Artists and rights owners have to be their own police, and unless you're as rich and single-minded as Prince was, it's impossible. So instead the rights agencies accepted criminally one-sided agreements. There was no upside for Prince except the moral one.

They've long needed a champion in government and none has arrived.

Re: Buzzworthy Buzzbands - Live and Sweaty 2K17

Cabinet of Wonders was a fun show, especially if you're a decrepit old white Brooklyn fart like me who listened to Adult Alternative radio in 1992.

Wesley Stace did 3 songs from his new album which came out yesterday backed by his "English UK" house band, which was assisted by ex-Hooter Eric Bazilian.

Teddy Thompson, son of Richard and Linda, is a very good singer, like an intense, country Chris Isaak.

My close personal friend and neighbor Freedy Johnston came out, did a new song about a girl from Greenpoint, "Bad Rep" and a "How Deep is Your Love" cover.

An opera singer recited the "Grab Em By The Pussy" thing to piano accompaniment to much yuks.

Sophie B. Hawkins did "Damn! I Wish I Was Your Lover" and her Dylan "I Want You" cover

Dave Cousins of the Strawbs, a band I don't know a lot about other than being where Rick Wakeman started, came out and did a few. Stace worshipped the guy and it came off emotional.

There were two readings, one by journalist Jon Ronson who spoke of experiences with bullshitting scary yuks now in Trump administration.

Bazilian, who played guitar, piano and sax withe the house band, performed "And We Danced." I remember writing about seeing him before as an opening act and coming off as a bitter old dick, but he was in better spirits last night.

Re: Buzzworthy Buzzbands - Live and Sweaty 2K17

You like the many performers/short sets thing? It sounds cool, listeners get to see lots of acts, skim the hits, etc. Downside is maybe you have to sit through some people you don't care for one way or another, you prob want more of someone you do care for, and every band gets yanked by the time you start settling in to their vibe?

Re: Buzzworthy Buzzbands - Live and Sweaty 2K17

Well, I think this show works because whoever appears, being on the bill is like getting the equivalent of the "Good Housekeeping" seal of adult alternative folk-rock-pop for Brooklyn NPR oldsters. It's like Stace has deep equity as a trustworthy curator, and part of his mission is to get people to go to the full-show performances and buy the records. We sat opposite a different set of old white NPR-listening Brooklyn oldsters and his first remark was "Every time we go this show we get turned on to a different artist we didn't know before!"

I suppose if I had my druthers I'd have seen more Freedy & Wesley but it wasn't like that went against my expectations of what I was getting myself into. It's like the difference between shopping in a c-store vs. shopping in a supercenter: you tend to go there with a different mission in mind.

Vibe was pretty consistent and not too jarring because they all share the same house band and in this show, the same guitar.

Rancid was a lot of fun in 1994. Man, I used to love those guys when I was #young&angry. I saw a picture of Tim Armstrong the other day and couldn't believe it was the same dude. If they came to town, I'd prob go watch em.

Saw the Shins the other night in a triumphant hometown return show. They previewed some new stuff and it was a little more synth and dance-driven, but it was still very much the Shins, and if their earlier stuff "changed your life" [via the Garden State], you'd probably very much still like the new offerings.

Bought tix to Elvis Costello and the Attractions, and then for Fleet Foxes later in the fall. Driving hard for 10 legit rock shows this year.

Re: Buzzworthy Buzzbands - Live and Sweaty 2K17

Midnight Oil at Webster Hall last night where I met the CPF's own smg for the first time.

I was a freshman in college and must have been talking up, I dunno, Dire Straits or something when a guy in my Italian class said "well, if you like guitar you should listen to Midnight Oil."

So I bought "10-9-8" and later RED SAILS IN THE SUNSET and was hooked. They mixed Twin-Lead-Guitar Action with anthemic protest songs, and were really creative in the studio -- big 80s productions and effects but also with a beach-bar, surf-guitar feel. Everybody caught up to me by the time DIESEL & DUST came out in '87; I felt at that point they'd become an alternative U2, each had a charismatic passionate singer and Big Rock guitar and were occasionally too much to take but they were always one of my favorites, though I'd fall in and out of the mood for their stuff over the years. Often I forget their songs, and how many of them I know, until I hear them again, so it was a treat to be reminded live.

Smg told me he has 10 shows to compare it to so I'd be interested in his take. But I was surprised how easily they got the crowd to bash right into it, cleverly opening with "Sometimes" which I remember as the last song on D&D. They are all in their 60s now and Garrett looked the oldest of them, not quite the dervish he once was and to me occasionally looked to be sucking wind, not that he wasn't working. But nobody got fat, and the classic quintet are all still there (bassist Bones Hillman is the newest member but joined in 1987). Drummer Rob Hirst, who's also a great singer, is about as ripped as any 60-year-old guy I've ever seen. They brought him out front with a tiny kit to sing "Generals" and "My Country" and employed a multi-instrumentalist to fill-in on drums, brass and keys so they didn't cheat their productions, which I appreciated.

They played for about 2 hours including several "new" songs I didn't know well. Highlight for me was "Warakurna" which I think of as the blood-and-guts of D&D but I don't think was ever a hit or on the radio. I seriously got emotional when they played it. They tried a cover of "Instant Karma" on the 1st encore but Peter forgot the second-verse lyrics.

It was all standing in the audience and a tall guy with a hat positioned himself directly in front of where we were hanging moments before the show. The smg's decamped somewhere else, I developed a sore neck 3 songs in. Fortunately Tall Hat Guy went to take a leak and I made sure when he got back he was behind me. Wifey Bucket no longer goes to "standing-up" shows for this reason.

My view eventually looked like this quick clip, considering how many peeps had their phones up I'm certain there's better clips out there:

Wound up seeing MIDNIGHT OIL three times (IIRC) over the years although all of them a bunch of years ago.
Once was at Jones Beach opening for someone (though forget who at this point), once more at the same venue with them headlining this time, and once during an impromptu lunch-time set-up on 6th
Avenue as they were protesting in front of what was then (and maybe still) the Exxon building around the time of the Alaska/Valdez crash/spill. Garrett decided that day it would be a good idea to climb
and sing from the top of the speaker tower so more of the mid-day crowd could get a good view, a move which worked right up until the big boxes shifted under him then they and he cane atumblin' down.
He wound up unhurt but it was like watching a tree come down in slow motion with all his long limbs going this way and that during the fall.

I saw Brian Wilson last night. The key to enjoying bands, I've learned, is managing expectation levels. I had super low expectations going in, and really dug the show. Brian is in pretty poor shape, he looked uncomfortable (no surprise there, I guess), his voice was weak, and every time there was a scheduled break in the show, he was quick to pop up and waddle off stage for a rest.

I've seen Al Jardine before and he was underwhelming, but Al was great last night, real animated, sounded good, and his kid, Matthew, sang all the high harmony parts that the old guys can't hit anymore, and he was superb. The band was massive (needed to be to get all the instruments and noise from 'Pet Sounds' and they were top shelf. The encore was Beach Boys hits ('Surfin USA', 'Good Vibrations', 'Barbara Ann'), and that felt like watching a really good cover band on a cruise ship or something, but the main portion of the show was surprisingly good.

As for Radiohead last month, my expectation for them based on previous shows was 'transcendent experience' and of course, what the fuck did I think was gonna happen? They were great, they were Radiohead, but it didn't move me or anything the way they have before. I kept thinking during the show, which other shows have I liked more than this? Who would I rather watch right now instead of this band? I couldn't quite put my finger on it, but the girl i was with felt the same after, too. It was just like a rock band playing an arena. I will always devour their releases, but I think I'm done with them as a live act unless it falls in my lap. It's not you, Radiohead, it's me.

I bought tickets for a trifecta of classic rock combo shows coming to our local brand new outdoor Lakeview Amphitheater. Saw two shows there last summer and was more pleased with the venue than I was struck by the awesomeness of the music itself (though Def Leppard did in fact kick some butt).

This year's shows are Boston (I know, Brad Delp is gone, but they got some Youtube guy to sing) and Joan Jett, and, then, also, Styx (minus Dennis DeYoung) and REO, and, then, finally, Foreigner (minus Lou Gramm)/Cheap Trick/Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Experience. I count 8.17 times seeing Steve Earle. Venues range from the Bowery Ballroom to City Wintry to Judson Church to the Blue Note to a theater in Ithaca.

I like him better when he's playing with a band but he's always worth seeing.

Boston with Brad Delp, too, I mean, that's 50% of the Boston sound right there, along with the Tom Scholz guitar work. Apparently their new singer was found via his MySpace fan page.

So karaoke pro replacing the dead/fired singer is an actual thing now for one-large rock bands. Was INXS the first in this kinda direction? Kids, do not find your own voice. Find someone else's, just in case.

My first time was when he was supporting Train A-Comin', backed by an acoustic unit featuring Peter Rowan, Norman Blake, and the now-deceased Roy Huskey, Jr. on standup bass. I was a neophyte and had no idea that this was an absolute all-star unit of traditional acoustic all-star supergroup. It was astoundingly good.

It was back in the nineties following his (hopefully) last trip to rehab, and the audience was devoutly committed to what they figured was their special secret, this guy who had led a train-wreck life but had a Dylan-level batting average, with 85% of his songs being instant classics.

Since then, he's sort of achieved NPR Darling status, and he seems more self-conscious about his stature and prestige, with a handful of must-play staples in the set that he really shouldn't have let himself get tied down to. But he's never not writing, so there's always going to be high-risk portions in any show. Look for some fiery political discourse during the essaying between the songs. I can bust on him for getting too cozy with the All Things Considered set, but the dude has an impressive sense of solidarity, and that's what makes him a helluva songwriter.

Paul McCartney is one of the few I have yet to see out of laziness but I am getting my arse to this tour.

Not Halford - his replacement for a while, Tim "Ripper" Owens, who was singing in a Priest tribute band when he joined the real band in the mid-90s for two albums while Halford was off doing solo stuff.

Did not know this. It's such a weird concept. I get the lesser known dudes in a band trying to keep the brand name viable, but by replacing the well-known front person with a karaoke star or tribute band dude, theyre essentially transforming into some cover band of themselves.

Ultimately, though, isn't that what sustainability looks like? If musicians with well loved catalogs must die — and being mortal, die they must — you want that legacy to be passed down, to continue to be performed live. Isn't it better that the surviving and retiring band members manage their brand and create a succession plan that will outlive them than for fans of the music, giving new succeeding generations an option presumably more professionally curated than the wildcat knockoffs with punny names?

Anyhow, great jazz orchestras and big bands thought so, and versions of the Duke Ellington Orchestra and Count Basie Orchestra still perform to this day. I'm certain within five years there will be a version of KISS on-tour, made up of a bunch of young slingers clearly more talented than KISS ever was, hand-picked by Gene and Paul and working for a salary while the profits are divided up by The Demon and the Starchild via KISS LLC.

He's a charismatic front man (the chickz are eating him up in that vid) with a really good band, but his vocals sound closer to late-model Axl than anything Hutchence- or Elvis-referencing. He's not terrible, but he seems unsure of which voice of his sounds authentic, even as he seems Hutchence-confident in his game, and up to the bridge he's got another guy doubling his lead vocal. A better-singing guy guy.

The $75 is with tax and a fee and are the cheapest. I don't know much about
America other than listening to that white greatest hits cd for going on decades

Re: Buzzworthy Buzzbands - Live and Sweaty 2K17

America was a mostly a trio. They had peripheral musicians that were technically in the band back in the earliest days, but everyone knew it was a threesome — founding members Dewey Bunnell, Dan Peek, and Gerry Beckley. Great, Beatle-ish harmonies emerged from the three of them, which was no accident, as they learned their craft listening to Beatle records and were fortunate enough to become the second-most successful band produced by George Martin.

In the late seventies, Peek found himself torn between rocking (and drinking and drugging) and his faith, and chose the latter. You might figure, if that's the way he wants to go, let him go, but it was a big loss, and like the B-52s when Cindy Wilson quit, America found that the three-voice dynamic lost a lot when it was down to two.

A lot of seventies folk-rock bands discovered that they had been recategorized as "adult contemporary" by the eighties, and some might've scratched their heads, thinking, "Have we changed, or just the categories?" but America ended up making an explicit grab for the adult contemporary market, jumped labels, rebranded themselves, and nailed a last hit or two ("You Can Do Magic!") to the wall—a last hit or two that nobody wants to hear. You almost respect the honesty of the money grab, but not so much. They scratched out a few more minor, peripheral hits with superstar LA session musicians through the eighties and by the 1990s, the nostalgia circuit was calling.

But sometime around 2010, the Jeff Tweedy/Fountains of Wayne pop-rock revivalist set all came around to admitting they loved America's 70s catalog, and they put their heads together and helped Beckley and Bunnell put aside their nostalgia and record a record full of nu tunes, collaborating with younger artists like FoW's Jeff Schleshinger, Smashing Pumpkins' James Iha, and even Ryan F. Adams. It's probably got some good stuff on it, I dunno, but if I was to go to the show, I might first check this collection out.

Peek, who played that gorgeous acoustic lick on Ventura Highway, passed away in 2011, having become a pioneer in Contemporary Christian music, staying friends with Beckley and Bunnell and occasionally sitting in with them. His main lead vocal for the band was "Lonely People," which was conceived as an answer song to "Eleanor Rigby."

Re: Buzzworthy Buzzbands - Live and Sweaty 2K17

Listening to that video makes me wonder if part of the appeal to 'America' fans is that their songs are/were so easy to re-create in a live setting so as to be nearly identical to the original studio single.
For longtime fans-- who are now long in the tooth fans -- most likely to be buying tickets on this type of nostalgia train, maybe that sort of familiarity is a hook for an 'America' show in a way where it
wouldn't for say a 'Beach Boys' gig where you know going in that you're not getting the highly-produced original single version. That in turn might account for the higher demand/dollar ticket.

It wouldn't be MY reason for paying extra as my reaction to someone describing their concert experience as; "great cuz all the songs sounded exactly like they do on the radio" was to ask 'then why
spend the money when you could have just stayed home with the album .. I mean, was the light show really worth all that cash?' But clearly that sort of 'don't color outside the lines' comfort matters
to some.

Elvis Costello & the Imposters (plus two backup singers) doing all of Imperial Bedroom plus other songs in Central Park. Imperial Bedroom done out of order and for the most part interspersed with songs that connect to the songs on that album. For instance, he said that the couple in Watching the Detectives became the couple in The Long Honeymoon (from Imperial Bedroom) and then became the couple from Indoor Fireworks (from King of America). A 2.5 hour long show, half of it being the encore. Did at least one song from the musical he is writing based on "Face in the Crowd." If you don't know the Imperial Bedroom album you would definitely enjoy the concert less than those of us who do know it. He had rarely performed songs from that album in concert because of the need for backup singers (which the Attractions never had). Fun night.

Re: Buzzworthy Buzzbands - Live and Sweaty 2K17

Petty was worth it for me. The scuttle last year was that he was wanting to make this tour a complete playing of WILDFLOWERS. While a full playing of the album did not materialize (WILDFLOWERS is also the only Petty album not available on its own in re-release vinyl format creating a giant hole in my collection), over a quarter of the songs he played last night were from that album...which is my favorite Petty album. He even threw in Walls from SHE'S THE ONE which is another of my favorite gems from that era. While he settled into a couple of WILDFLOWER'S b-sides in the middle of the set list, I'm sure some casual fans were hoping for The Waiting, Breakdown, You Got Lucky or Here Comes My Girl, but I could not have asked for a better collection of songs for my Petty tastes.

Rockin' Around (With You)
Mary Jane's Last Dance
You Don't Know How It Feels
Forgotten Man
Into the Great Wide Open
I Won't Back Down
Free Fallin'
Walls
Don't Come Around Here No More
It's Good to Be King
Crawling Back to You
Wildflowers
Learning to Fly
Yer So Bad
I Should Have Known It
Refugee
Runnin' Down a Dream
------------------------------
You Wreck Me
American Girl

I didn't feel like the group really started rocking until Free Fallin'. The tempos were a few beats per minute slower than the album versions on Mary Jane, You Don't Know How It Feels and Into the Great Wide Open making the songs a bit more plodding than rocking...but once the band warmed up, they showed what I had already known...they are a great collection of musicians that play well together.

I was amazed at the collection of great guitars that Petty and Campbell used. They handled over 20 different guitars over the course of the night and they sported matching Gibson Explorers on Runnin' Down A Dream. Good stuff. Petty did not remove his sunglasses at any point during the show and his banter was heavily scripted. But the group did not disappoint and I'm glad I went.

Missing "Breakdown," from that set list, also, now that I review it. If you're skipping those two, well, damn. I guess he's got a lot of hits to choose from. But still.

I've been thinking about this -- it's some kind of luxury to have such a catalog of musical success and popularity. I'm on a 1970-1975 McCartney/Wings kick of late, between re-listening to full studio albums with lots of underplayed great songs, like "Ram," and "Venus and Mars," and watching the "Rockshow" concert movie he made from his mid 70's tour, and knowing that when I see him at the Carrier Dome in September I'm unlikely to get a single song from those albums (this having been borne out from reviewing his recent set lists at setlist.fm).

I went to a buzzworthy live and sweaty show last night. Full report to come later, but my wife wasn't feeling well and bailed, but she insisted I stay. So my friend Rick offered me a ride home.

Rick had his 2010 Honda Civic stolen last week. And shockingly, the car was not only recovered a few days later, but the perps were arrested. Rick was naive enough to treat this as good news. He preferred getting his Civic back to getting the insurance payout. OK, I guess.

But I'm sitting in the back of that car, and whoever had it clearly spent three days marinating in clouds of pot. I'm not talking dude, I'm glad you could come to the party, when you're ready, wink-wink, second door at the top of the stairs. I'm talking bad boys, bad boys, what you gonna do? watcha gonna do when they come for you?

I've since taken two showers, but I still smell it on myself and I'm afraid my co-workers will too. I know getting a contact high off of upholstery is pretty unlikely, but I'm feeing kinda baked.

Annabella opened the proceedings with a three-song set. THREE! It was actually only two and a half, as I missed the first half a song finding my way to my seats.

She had only been added to the lineup to replace the higher profile of Paul Young, who has had to miss some dates. Young can still draw a crowd on his own, so I imagine he had a much bigger set further up the bill, and in replacing him, they threw an extra song to other acts and gave Annabella the postage-stamp of an opening set. It hardly seemed worth it, but she was lively and game. It's tough being the one who's got to work up the crowd when the sun is still up there and folks are filtering in and nobody's drunk yet. You get their attention, and BOOM! You're gone. But she gave us the first surprise of the night, and one of the biggest. You see, Annabella no longer wants candy. Three songs and no "I Want Candy"! Perhaps given a three song set, she's committed to leaving out the covers, and only doing to do songs where she gets songwriting credit (and the few extra bucks from the publisher that means). But I bet the promoters were surprised.

Anabella these days looks like the saucy woman who sells tee-shirts down at the boardwalk.

Annabella and Katrina shared the same backing band. Katrina still has a powerhouse voice, which was nice because most of the lead vocals were sublimated badly in the mix. Unlike Annabella, she knew where her bread was buttered. Her four-song set included all classick singles (although no "Mexico"). She even teased out the big gun, saying, "I can't leave here without doing THIS song," and when folks cheered, she said "Thanks for being so supportive of ... my new single!" She was funning, though, because she winked and instantly broke into "Walking on Sunshine" (which briefly made me think of laundry detergent commercials). Katrina's a pro's pro. She also established a theme for much of the evening — black clothes. Young bands wear black because it's cool and detached and dark and byronic. Old bands wear black because it's slimming.

Katrina looks like a cool middle-school art teacher.

Next up was Modern English. This was a surprise to me, because I would have thought their catalog goes deeper than Men Without Hats. They looked like pretty much an old, graying version of the lineup of early days. ME defied the evening's convention by everyone wearing all white, head to toe, like an Abbey Road album cover where everybody is John Lennon. (I bet the whoever does the laundry for the tour hates them.) The guitarist who used to wear funky braids in his hair now looks like an evil backwoods warlock with long stringy beard and hair and facial tatts. Their long tenure together has made them an especially tight little unit, not requiring sequencers like some of the later acts, and they became the first band to present a new song(!). Most everybody else was all “Here’s the old shit! Let’s dance!!” They are much more than "I Melt With You," though, so when they played the opening bars "Hands Across the Sea," I made a point to yell to everybody in the crowd, "LISTEN TO THIS! IT'S A REALLY GREAT SONG!" You're welcome, Mod. Eng.

Modern English singer Robbie Grey looks like later-stage John McEnroe.

The Beat definitely had the biggest lineup, even if their set was really short considering their catalog depth. Yet, they went on before Men Without Hats too! This was not really The English Beat at all, but Dave Wakeling and the Guys He Plays with Now. Endless lawsuits have resulted in Wakeling having the rights to the name "The English Beat," but Andy Cox and David Steele having the rights to the name "The Beat," but neither version is really the guys who made that great music back in the US Festival days. Wakeling's egg-shaped guitar is the main visual reference drawing back to that era, but this (mostly young) unit has toured with him for a few years and knows their roles. Their keyboardist looked like Mr. Cool from SCHOOL OF ROCK. The guy who took the role of Ranking Roger was a young guy in his 20s who looked like NFL star Richard Sherman. Mostly great playing by the fake band, but the mix sucked. The sax and Wakeling's voice were totally lost in the mix. I confess, I confess, I confess.

Modern-day Dave Wakeling looks a lot like Barney Rubble.

And Men Without Hats singer Ivan Doroschuk looks like late-stage George Carlin (receding hairline, long gray ponytail, and neatly trimmed goatee—an impression that was instantly belied by his fabulous sequined shirt and his still roaring baritone. They were hilariously good. Lineup included Doroschuk, two keyboardists and his old guitarist. It was the highlight set of the night, even if his half a dozen songs included playing "Safety Dance" twice! Some like the yelled vocal on the seven-inch version and some like the detached half-spoken vocal of the 12-inch version! He gave us both! It was shameless and somehow great!

And if you got in the spirit of the thing, it was alright. Black and white people danced together, and even the folks selling refreshments on the pavilion were singing along to every song. It depended on how game the artist at the time was. You know, it can be a DRAG singing the 35-year-old monsters still, while nobody wants to hear the thing you’ve been working on, and frankly, the promoter isn’t giving you enough of a slot to work that in.

In the end, though, Howard Jones was mostly an overproduced snore, despite the two drum-pad-banging drummers. He had the headliner’s slot and got to augment his set with video projections (including projecting the old music video of the song he was playing on one track). He lived up to the billing of the concert by relying on retro-futuristic technology, like sequencers and auto samplers that allowed him to sing harmonies with himself, but it all allows him to be lazy as he strutted around the stage with his keytar. He was the only act with a long enough set to take the audience to any emotional depth, but by packing the early half of his set with songs from his late-eighties/early nineties decline—songs that got airplay but didn't really stick in the lexicon—he could never really get them there. These were good records—"Prisoner," "You Know I Love You," heavier songs that kind of sounded like Hagar-era Van Halen, except they didn't have a superstar guitarist and even Hagar would never write "You got the socket, baby, I got the plug/You are the floor and I am the rug." So, I got the feeling half the audience was wondering if their parking fee had expired or the babysitter was going to charge overtime, while the other waited for a catharsis that never came. By the time the set ended with a double-time electronic eruption from his band, nobody was curious about sticking around for an encore. (Weird!)

Howard these days sort of looks like a clever little imp—or better yet, Kokopelli—with his big happy chin and his back bent from all those years playing that damned keytar.

But the highlight of highlights was running into a South Side High School Class of '85 classmate on the concourse! Gary Fuckin’ Stackman! I haven’t seen Gary since graduation day in 1985 and he recognized me after 37 years! (And frankly, I kinda look like shit these days.)

This was an unexpected grace. I’ve known Gary since kindergarten, but you know, we were in different sets in middle school and high school. I liked him, but sometimes it just shakes out that way. So, I really hadn’t said more than a few words to him since seventh grade.

But then one day in eleventh grade, Gary handed me a note that and says "Call that number."

I'm all "What?"

And he said, "That's the school counselor."

And I'm all "What?"

And he says, "You haven't smiled in a month. You're not doing your homework, and you're not even raising your hand in class. I know you know this stuff. It looks like your not getting along with your friends, and sitting behind you, it's kind of radiating off of you that you're miserable. Do yourself a favor and talk to somebody."

I'm not sure I even realized he had been sitting behind me. Who looks out for that sort of thing for a classmate in high school? So, I visited the counselor. It's not like I underwent extensive therapy and transformed myself. I had a session or two and moved on. But I became aware that, yeah, I had to occasionally look out for my emotional health. None of my alleged friends would have watched out for me like that. Nobody in my family would have thought to do that. But Gary fucking Stackman did. It was one of the most surprising kindnesses I've ever received and it's stayed with me all these years in part because, like the withdrawn dullard I was turning into, I never thanked the guy.

That had been a regret. But there he was, now living in Potomac, Maryland and appearing out of nowhere on the concourse, and thank him I finally did! 33 years later! Thanks, old new wave bands, for giving me the opportunity to check that one off my list!

I did see an awesome 1980s show a few years back with Tommy Tutone, Wang Chung, Cutting Crew and ABC. A glorious night.

Brad Paisley last night at Jones Beach. I'm ostensibly not a country music fan, so I had no need for any of the openers, but Paisley is fantastic live. There's nobody out there who plays the way he does.

Plus, an incredibly good dude by all accounts. Gave a guitar (!!) to a kid in the front row, took selfies and videos with the crowd while playing, brought out all three openers to sing/play with him on various songs, invited a group of Marines on stage for a beer (literally) after he played "Love And War," his homage to vets. Great night all around.

Men Without Hats had 2 top ten songs, 1 in 1983 and 1 in 1987, so I'd figure that they'd have at least two albums to go with that.

Alas, no. I was held up at work and didn't get home until after 8 and I would have missed a big chunk of the show. It was a victim of working 71 miles from home and having a lot of stuff going on.

I like "Safety Dance," which is nothing but great memories. I confess that I'm not familiar with the second single. But that's part of the fun of those concerts. After by other 80s concert I went and tracked down other Cutting Crew and Wang Chung albums. More hits from them than I thought. Not sure how much of the original Cutting Crew was there that night, but the two Wang Chung guys and their backing band were really good.

Yeah, but see, I read that comment as a compliment.

The seventies isn't the only decade with wrongly discarded deep tracks and fringe singles that are actually buried treasures, from acts wrongly derided as one-hit wonders.

I missed the great writeup on Edgy's 80s show.

I think about Springsteen a lot, often in the context of knowing I'll probably never see one of his shows ever again. Tickets to his bway shows are going for $6,000 already. It strikes me sad that it's inevitably come to this, and that Bruce's whole message is so completely missing his intended target anymore, as poor white losers voted for that fucking idiot in the White House and Springsteen couldn't be more irrelevant to them.

I don't think this Broadway production is a good idea, and is a powerful signal that Bruce has lost what used to differentiate him: continuing to produce new, relevant, and good music.

More power to him for charging what he wants to charge and doing another retrospective production but when this was announced, it made me more than a little sad.

Went to a very cool fundraiser show last night at the Santa Fe Opera House. The event was put on by Amelia Bauer who is the wife of Grizzy Bear's Daniel Rossen (they sat just a few feet down the row from us) and they were raising $$ for Santa Fe National Organization for Women.

5 acts starting at 5pm, and we were a little slow getting there, choosing beers at a local brewery instead of openers Heather Trost (?) and Lower Dens. Got there in time for the excellent Tune-Yards set. Tune-Yards is Merrill Garbus, a bay-area musician and fricken loop master. She plays a ukulele and loops different sounds and tribal beats and her voice and she's trippy and energetic and wonderful and weird. I saw her previously on an amazing bill with St. Vincent and another time at Coachella when I was young and had energy, and she's a marvel. "A" grade performance. If you ever get the chance, do. Cool example of how she sets up layers and layers of loops:

Next was TV on the Radio. Haven't dug their previous couple of releases, but they jammed 'the hits' from the first 2 albums and I was happy. Solid "B-".

Headlining was Bon Iver. I've seen them previously on a couple of occasions and was hyped to see the "22" album performed live. But this was a Justin Vernon solo set instead, which I didn't know was a thing he did. He had a laptop, drum machine, loop station, and a few guitars and he went through songs from the first couple albums, re-imagined with sparse arrangements and super basic 4-on-the-floor beats behind him. He did a couple of super-layered, acapella, voice-only loop songs and they were intense. This guy has the most soulful voice you'd expect from a bearded dude from Wisconsin. Amazingly talented, it was cool to see him in this environment. Feel like watching him screw around at his home studio. Full band still woulda been cool. Set was short and no encore. Still an "A-" from me.

Saw Paul McCartney the other night at Barclays Center. Great setlist and the band is top-notch but the human jukebox element plus his neediness for accolades kind of got to me. Nonetheless, one of those check the box items. I did enjoy some of the less expected songs, You Won't See Me, I've Just Seen a Face and In Spite of All the Danger. Also the encore of Yesterday-Day Tripper-Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise)-Golden Slumbers-Carry That Weight-The End was pretty great.

The week before I saw Patti Smith in Central Park on the occasion of the birthday of her late husband, Fred (Sonic) Smith of the MC5. Good show but I was hoping she would do Kick Out the Jams. Sadly, that didn't happen but she was in fine form.

Re: Buzzworthy Buzzbands - Live and Sweaty 2K17

Pulling out songs that John sang lead on (and mostly or totally wrote) cuts both ways, dunnit?

I mean, on one hand, yeah, these songs need someone to carry on their legacy and you, Paul McCartney, are as worthy as anybody. On the other hand, another can suggest that it kind of speaks to his desperate need to continue the needy "I was as cool as John" argument.

I'm a big fan of "I've Got a Feeling" (probably my favorite Beatles song), and it's nice to see that appearing in his playlists these days.

Well Paul did open with "A Hard Days Night", a John song although Paul did sing the "when I'm home" part. I always love the songs that they both are featured on, among them the aforementioned "I've Got a Feeling" plus "A Day in the Life" (both of which he played). He also did, in succession, "I Wanna Be Your Man," "Being For the Benefit of Mr. Kite" and "Something" all originally sung by Ringo, John and George respectively but really who else should be doing those songs (other than Ringo for the first one)?

My point about the accolades was at this point what does he need to stand there basking in the applause for? Others don't to the degree that he does.

Re: Buzzworthy Buzzbands - Live and Sweaty 2K17

Me and muh lady friend closed out the Santa Fe Opera House #SeasonOfBuzzbands with a triple header of Fleet Foxes/Beach House -> Wilco -> the Shins.

I'll say the new Fleet Foxes album is their most challenging/least accessible release, but it was beautiful to listen to live. They had a quartet of dudes who played various woodwind and horn instruments that beefed up the arrangements. I started to like the fuller, more layered songs from the new record better than the folkie hits from the previous two. A surprising and respectable A- grade. I've seen Beach House a few times and I just can't vibe them. All the songs are the same mid-to-slow tempo, brooding synth pop. But Vickie Legrand has great shoulders. C+/B- for those guys.

I won't shit on about Wilco. I love them, they're my favorite band, they were excellent, A++++.

The Shins! They started out as a #RelevantLocalBuzzband in Albuquerque and it was great to see them back in Nuevo Mehhico, waxing nostalgic about the early days and specific inspirations for the "Garden State"-era hits. The Shins were a full-on dance party and I was happier than I thought to get to seem em twice in the same calendar year. Solid A.

Re: Buzzworthy Buzzbands - Live and Sweaty 2K17

Last week I caught an evening of vocal instrumentation called Embody, which is an ongoing collection of folks who do weird shit with their vocals including beatboxers (such a local big shot Shodekeh and New York pioneer DOA), as well as Tuvan throat singers, and champeen mouth trumpeter Victoria Vox.

Cut ahead to about 0:35 to get past her narration and listen to her doing her thing.

[youtube:2ydmq9at]12boBhA_Mmo[/youtube:2ydmq9at]

At one point, DOA asked the host to get a few of the local beatboxers onstage to improvise with him, and one of the guys called up was a guy we know. Exciting! But ... we're kind of friends with him, I mean, he's been to our house, and he and his wife are besties with two of our favorite neighbors. But he has this bulletproof surfer-dude boyishness that's a little offputting. He has a little side racket where he teaches toddlers to make beats, and he kinda comes across like the karate teacher whose whole act is about making an impression on the moms.

Re: Buzzworthy Buzzbands - Live and Sweaty 2K17

I saw on of my faves Queens of the Stone Age on Sunday in Milwaukee. I have seen them several times and they always put on a good show.

Last night, I took in Deer Tick here in Madison. This is another band I have seen several times and this was the tightest I have seen them. I have recommended them several times here and elsewhere. For my money, I think they are the most underrated rock band in the industry right now. They just released two new albums (not a double album, but two separate albums that act as companions to one another). One album is more acoustic while the other is electrified. They played two separate sets live following the acoustic/electric dichotomy.

I would rank their new albums as the #1 and #2 best released in 2017...and I like to think I listen to a lot of new releases. Their new work is their most mature, tightest and best sounding release to date. I would describe the new releases as what it would sound like if The Replacements and Nirvana had a baby, which was then adopted by The Heartbreakers and The E-Street Band and raised in Nashville.

Giving that Deer Tick Vol. 1 album a spin right now. Dude's got one of those voices for me. I need a coupla few songs for it to settle in with my ears, then I'm good.

@Monk, you gonna see Bon Iver do that For Emma 10-year anniversary show?

Yeah, the John McCauley's voice is not for everyone and Deer Tick vox can take some getting used to.

I'll probably get the For Emma reissue since I don't have that one on vinyl, but I don't know if I'll attempt the show in Milwaukee. I'm not a huge Bon Iver fan (at least compared to others here locally) and I'm guessing tix will be a feeding frenzy.

I was a little bummed if I read news of the re-issue correctly. It's just new artwork and liner notes, no new treatment or extra tracks. I might pass on it. I think you're right on the show likely being a madhouse. Only seen him twice, but jeebus, he is special.

Speaking of buzzworthy buzzbands, I saw Iron & Wine last night. The last time I saw them was several years ago when he settled into his new full band, and he was pretty goddamn boring, it reeked of adult-contemporary, lido deck, cruise ship soft rock. Gave him another shot last night based on the pretty strong new record and he was waaaay more interesting (and funny!). The arrangements included a super talented cellist who did a lot of weird shit with a cello I've never seen before and a keys player who made some neat synth noises. Coupled with a cool stage show, I&W was almost edgy. It was cool.

Opener was the incredible John Moreland. John, if you're by chance a Met fan and reading this, sorry the crowd was so fucking loud and talky.

Speaking of middle-aged dad-rock we saw Josh Ritter on Sunday. He comes off almost too upbeat to believe, never stops acting as though he's absolutely thrilled to be seeing Josh Ritter perform, keeps his big smile and bounce even when he's doing his sad songs. Full-on Hipster Dad band with the balding guitarist and bass player with the handlebar mustache. Great band, everyone had fun especially Josh.

Opener was Good Old War, a trio that sung a lot of harmonies, vocalist very earnest in that alternafolk way.

I like that Ritter. Total #NPRCoolDad rock.

I was a little into Good Old War a few years back and really dug a couple of songs off their debut. Maybe a little too poppy in the end for me, but you're right those dudes can sing it.

Re: Buzzworthy Buzzbands - Live and Sweaty 2K17

That sounds like a great show and seems like a great set. But it also seems to be a lot of CSN/Y songs in there I associate with the other guys.
"Carry On"/"Questions" = Stills/Stills
"Long Time Gone" = Crosby
"Radio" = Crosby?
"Bluebird" = totally Stills
"DeJa Vu" = Crosby
"Love the One You're With" = mucho Stills
"Helplessly Hoping" = Stills
"Guinnevere" = Crosby
"Almost Cut my Hair" = very Crosby
"Wooden Ships" = Crosby & Stills
"Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" = very Stills[/list:u]

After all these years, you'd think the guy would be confident leaning on his own songs, especially since he's publicly declared a "never again" antipathy for David Crosby. No "Wasted on the Way"? No [crossout]"Our House"[/crossout] "Teach Your Children"?

Also, if you're going to dip into the other guys' catalogs, borrow from Neil, man.

Re: Buzzworthy Buzzbands - Live and Sweaty 2K17

That occurred to me also. I mean it's tough to get away from songs Crosby sang on since, as DC put it himself, he was put on this earth to sing harmonies and he did so on a wide variety of stuff.
But the inclusion of the Crosby written songs is surprising considering the personal state of affairs between he two.
One could also ask if there was nothing from the last half-century that he could squeeze in, but folks who populate the audience in those shows often just want to hear the hits.

I agree. He did do "Our House" in the first set. I thought the Hollies Carrie Ann would make it. More so I wanted "The Air that I breathe" most although he didnt write it either.

With CSNY, Stills is represented for sure. We know Graham is one of many that will not speak to Crosby. But no Neil? Thats a headscratcher. Maybe just not that night.

I think of Graham most with "Teach your Children."

Not a bad 400 seater for under a hundred bucks. I felt humbled.

Just a song before I go.....

Re: Buzzworthy Buzzbands - Live and Sweaty 2K17

JD McPherson on Tuesday in Brooklyn. He's an old-school roots rocker but in addition to Link Wray (for whom he campaigned for the RnRHoF) his new album has a lot of 60s garage rock in it and some soul swing. What I like about him is his songs are familiar but usually pack a couple moments of big drama and that was fun to see onstage. He plays with a Nashville-hipster band (a string bass slapper with a pompadour; a guitarist with slicked back hair, dungarees and gigantic ears like some country yokel; a big-bearded basher on the drums who looks like Opie from SONS OF ANARCHY; and then a keys/effects guy).

JD is a little guy with tiny feet and a custom guitar. His voice didn't round into shape till 4-5 songs in but everyone had a good old time anyway -- not much more than that, but what do you want, buzz? The show absolutely flew by.

Opener Nicole Atkins who I'd never heard of before played songs that were also retro-cool and most of them worked. I read later she's something of a one-time "alternative" buzzband artist who found her thing doing the rock-n-swing, very evocative of 60s soul belters. She came out and sung with JD for one song (also on his album) as they are labelmates and she's married to his sound guy, or something.

Go see JD when he comes to your town!

Re: Buzzworthy Buzzbands - Live and Sweaty 2K17

My poor wife, I love her so... a really heavy handed band called Sunlord opened
for Mr. Malmsteen and hit us over the head with about a six song set. They were tight
and good at what they do but even for me they were a bit much. Halfway through the first
song KB yelled at me, and I quote, "what the hell did you sign me up for here." It was
funny (to me).

Yngwie does things with a guitar that at times don't really seem humanly possible. I've
wanted to see him since Rising Force (released longer ago than I wish to acknowledge)
and was somewhat awestruck for the first couple of songs. About 3/4's of the way through
KB's says all the songs sound the same, ya know she was kinda right, and we agreed to
call it a night. Solid B+

There was a Blue Oyster Cult poster in the lobby that I pointed out. The look I got was
beyond priceless. See my poor wife ^^^.

Re: Buzzworthy Buzzbands - Live and Sweaty 2K17

Jake was okay, boy liked it. I wasn;t sure what we'd see. He is sort of all over the place, career wise, as I mentioned his first album was very good, the next 3 very uneven. His latest is really gentle and kind of sappy, a return of sorts to the 1st one, so his show was just him seated with an acoustic guitar, dressed all in black like Paul Simon in 1967 and his Beatres haircut. The crowd included lots of "lads" who I think came expecting to see a raucous rock show. We were in the balcony 2nd row center and 3 drunk Irish guys stumbled in 3 songs in and talked during the performance, irritating everyone around them and drawing a visit from the ushers to ask them to quiet down, which they didn't. One of them went to go get a beer and fell down the steps, but unfortunately it was only 2 of them.

Luckily before they beat me up for asking them to shut up Wifey spied open seats in the "luxury" balcony in front of us and quietly moved there, nobody said anything and we had much better seats and quiet, since it was an intimate show. Jake is a better guitar player than I would have guessed and a strong live singer. His material like I said is kinda a work in progress still.
