The All-New 2017 TV Thread

So we only stream anymore, and only pay for Amazon.

MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE season 2: Very good.

MOZART IN THE JUNGLE season 3: Total shit.

SNEAKY PETE season 1: Outstanding!
--Giovanni Ribisi plays a quick-thinking con man who takes on a new identity in order to steal enough money to pay gangsters holding his brother as hostage. An all-pro team of Gritty TV Drama veterans including Herk from THE WIRE; Heisenberg from BREAKING BAD; the Asian splatter expert from DEXTER; the old Russian and the girlfriend from THE AMERICANS all have roles.

Now that the Steelers have opted out of the Super Bowl we will prolly be watching more Food Channel. Chopped and Worst Cooks in America are my favorites

I enjoyed Good Behavior (on TNT) which just ended its first season a couple of weeks ago. (Still have one episode to watch.)

It has The Lady Mary as you've never seen her before!

Finished Luke Cage a couple of weeks ago. (I never binge) and just started watching Call the Midwife on Netflix, which seems like it might be interesting.

I also like Baskets, on FX, which just started season two.

Finally joined the decade and subscribed to Netflix. I watched Stranger Things, thought it was good, but maybe didn't live up to the hype?

LIttle Solo is watching Lost for the first time and enjoying it.

I second SNEAKY PETE. A good cast with a decent story and pacing.

I plan on watching season 2 of MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE, but so far I'm only two episodes in and I'm not making time for it yet.

We haven;t totally given up cable, it's just that we hardly watch broadcast TV anymore at all. But I suspect I can probably get by with Howie + internet highlights for home games, and stream the away ones thru a MLB TV sub, and come out on top.

Unless there's been a change that I don't know about, if you're in the New York market you can't watch Mets games, home or away, on the MLB app. All Phillies games, home or away, are blocked for me. Even when the Phillies are at Citi Field, I'm still stuck listening to the Phillies announcers. I can't get the Mets SNY or PIX broadcast unless I wait until the next day.

Started watching "A Series of Unfortunate Events" on Netflix which seems faithful to the books as much as I remember them from reading over a decade ago. Neil Patrick Harris chews the scenery in a way that could either delight or annoy depending on your predilections. The rest of the cast is stellar, especially the baby, and style of the sets and costumes are slightly unworldly.

BLACK MIRROR is so upsetting, its terrific.

MAN IN HIGH CASTLE continues last year's great inaugural season with more great stuff.

SNEAKY PETE. Yes.

Re: The All-New 2017 TV Thread

For those Amazon Primers, GOLIATH starring Billy Bob Thornton ended up pretty good for me after just an OK pilot.

BB plays an alcohoic, down-on-his-luck, disgraced lawyer who along with his rag-tag team of assistants, takes on SUPER MEGA CORP in a suicide that Billy Bob's team claim was wrongful death. William Hurt plays a kind of creepy, cartoonish villian (and there's a really cool scene in Ep 5 ******* I don't think this spoils anything ******** where his cartoonishness is pointed out to him, which was clever and it seemed like the writers were kind of making fun of themselves there).

Amazon Prime ratings give it just shy of 5 stars, but I'd give it like 3.75 or 4 myself. Quickly got tired of the crappy theme song and opening credit montage. 8 hour-long episodes so it goes pretty quickly. I kind of, somewhat endorse this show!

Sure, it's comixstuff, technically, but man alive, it's a thing unto itself. Closest thing might be if The Exorcist and Memento cross-bred, with a little bit of Fargo mordancy and shot-composition (which makes sense, as the two shows share a creator/showrunner, Noah Hawley). So, so weird and good.

Anyone seen DETROITERS on Comedy Central? It's a buddy workplace comedy with 2 youngish and stupid guys running a terrible ad agency; there's gross-out jokes, some physical comedy, absurdism and good chemistry between the leads. It also "stars" the city of Detroit (both actors are from there, it's shot there, it's sponsored by Chrysler) and is funniest when the city's so-called recovery interferes with their innate Motown provincialism: In one episode a floor of their half-filled office building is taken over by a bike-riding, millennial heavy tech company moving in from Boulder that is all about borrowing Detroit cred; this pisses off the guys but by the end of the episode a rival tech company is making an authenticity grab that pisses them both off. Uneven, but not too shabby.

Agree with Vic - SENSE 8 is a great show. Season 2 coming up in May. Netflix.

Agree with Irish - TABOO was really good but I forgot about it and never got back to it - I'm going to catch up on it.

Like Johnny Lunchbucket I also like DETROITERS, funny show. More than just a couple of yuks per episode.

On my own I found TRAVELERS on Netflix. A sic-fi time-traveling drama starring Eric McCormack (Will from 'Will & Grace') and a bunch of people I've never seen before. Future society has found a way to transport consciousness back to the past and do so in an effort to fix their apocalyptic society before it happens. One season so far. Not horrible.

Slammed "Brockmire" episodes 1-4, finally.

It's not perfect. It's dark at times, but when it's funny, it's funny. Plus, it's great with world-building (weird quirks assigned to background characters with subtle callbacks; Brockmire's tapestry of horrible anecdotes) and production design (the major-league flashbacks are in full-color-spectrum, while the dusty minor-league/podunk fracking town present is presented in a weathered, browns-and-grays palette, e.g.). And a good number of the jokes are genuine laugh-out-loud (Brockmire's HR call in the pilot: "That ball CANNOT be buried in a Jewish cemetery-- it has just been TATTOOED.") It's like the best of "Eastbound and Down," only not quite as bitterly nasty, with something like rounded, sympathetic characters, and featuring a lead performance that's something other than a caricature. Azaria really does some acting.

I really liked PATRIOT on Amazon Prime. It's a dark comedy telling the story of an American spy working to keep Iran from getting nuclear weapons. The work he does leaves him deeply sad and reflective, and so he sings these great folk songs as an outlet, which obviously draws attention to himself. He works for a Wisconsin pipe manufacturer as a front, and the cast of excellent co-workers who are trying to help him or figure him out add additional hijinx. The dialogue where the McMillan pipe people explain to people what they make is hilarious. The music and cinematography are awesome, too. Watch it!

Re: The All-New 2017 TV Thread

The first "season" of Twin Peaks -- a 2-hour pilot, IIRC, and 7 or so 1-hour shows beyond that -- was interesting, innovative, creepy, surprising, and unique. In short, it was GREAT!
The follow up second season, minus David Lynch who had a movie commitment, was confusing, ridiculous, and weird for the sake of being weird. In short, it was as bad as the first one was good.
As much as those early episodes were appointment viewing in that pre-DVR age and always the topic of conversation the following day, I think I bailed on season 2 partway through. That's how steep
a decline it was for me.

Will give this one a shot (DVR'ing and will probably watch Monday night). Not sure what to expect.

Re: The All-New 2017 TV Thread

As Warner Wolf might have said: If you were expecting anything resembling linear story-telling and/or coherence during the opening episodes of the revived Twin Peaks ... you lose!!

At 18 episodes long, they're going to need to show at least some direction in this thing or they're going to lose me long before it ends.
I'm not going to hang around for a dozen weeks wondering if/when it'll ever start to make sense.

Re: The All-New 2017 TV Thread

With only three episodes remaining in Season three of Better Call Saul, I can't help but notice the glacial pace at which the BCS story-line is still moving. Just about three seasons and Saul Goodman is still Jimmy McGill and Mike still isn't in the Meth game. This is more of an observation instead of a complaint. In many ways, the slow pace is one of BCS's charms. But it got me to wondering what the end point of the series is going to be. Will there ever be any overlap between the BCS timeline and the Breaking Bad timeline? Will BCS leapfrog the BB timeline and jump forward to the Cinnabon Gene era?

I don't know.

Re: The All-New 2017 TV Thread

There is an overlap now on Saul. Fring is here. He bought the warehouse for future use. Hectors stroke is being more than hinted at.

It was fast but the female Walter White dosed with the sarin cigarette has appeared.

Jimmy has to behave for one year. Ain't gonna happen.

3 episodes to go. I'm guessing Jimmy effs up, Kim leaves and Saul Goodman "Attorney" is born and first client is Mike. I am looking for a couple Aaron Paul appearances at some point.

I am stumped on Cinnabon's time frame.

Love this show!

I don't think the two shows have overlapped yet. At the beginning of the BB timeline (Season One, Approx. EP. One) Walter White runs into and reunites with Jesse Pinkman, whom he hasn't seen since Pinkman was enrolled in White's HS chemistry class, a few years earlier. I don't think BCS is there yet, but now that I think of it as I write this post, it's possible that there is overlap. In the BCS world, I guess we really don't know if WW already met Jesse post-HS. As of now in the world of BCS, Fring still hasn't acquired the industrial laundry that will serve as cover for his super-advanced meth lab. But in the BB timeline, White and Pinkman don't meet up with Fring for a while. We don't know how long Fring was operating out of the industrial laundry when he first meets White and Pinkman.

So on second thought, I guess that it can't yet be determined whether or not the BCS and BB timelines are yet overlapping.

Re: The All-New 2017 TV Thread

But on third thought, doesn't Jesse hook up with Saul Goodman early on? And isn't it implied that Saul and Jesse go back a few years? And yet, in BCS, Jimmy isn't Saul yet. So maybe the two shows haven't yet intersected.

OE -- Saul's BB debut is S2E8, when Pinkman and White retain Saul to handle Badger's arrest. (BTW - Badger's arrest on the bus stop bench is one of my favorite BB scenes of all-time).

This isn't definitively resolving this issue.

At minimum a number of characters from Breaking Bad have made their into.

The timeline is not clear to me but a feel a sense of where it is headed.

The joy is that we don't truly know until it is written and airs.

just finished: ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK - i liked this season, which is all based on the prison riot and its aftermath. Piper is now more of a secondary character, making the whole show less irritating.
watching now: HOUSE OF CARDS - i'm almost half way into the season. The fact that i haven't gobbled it all up in one bite shows a distinct lessening of interest on my part. It's ok, but not compelling.
also: CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND - i've been told by numerous friends that i should watch this show, so i've just started it. After 2 episodes, i can see myself either falling in love with it or growing to hate it quite quickly.
coming soon: PREACHER and GAME OF THRONES - yee hah!

I recently rewatching The Good Place (at nbc.com; the entire season is available).

I rarely watch reruns, but after seeing it once, I knew it had to be done.

The first time around, I thought it was funny and very cleverly designed. The format, where each show was a chapter of a story, allowed for surprises and changes in the situation.

Watching a second time makes you understand just how brilliant the whole show is. There are extremely funny things going on that you don't (and can't) notice on first viewing.

I had already sent them a message, but a second doesn't hurt.
It's still a good show but they're slowly sliding into the same old infotainment land that you accept on late night 'fun' shows and you've come to expect on ersatz news shows like 'Today'.

What prompted this mini-rant is, that while they've usually been sliding one celeb interview in per 90 minutes show, this past week they stuffed the show with three.
Actor Andrew Garfield -- who, Surprise!, has a movie coming out soon and he plays handicapped so get your Oscar buzz ready;
Ivana Trump -- and she just happens to have a new book out and is making the circuit of ... well, probably whoever will have her;
and Pink. Why Pink? (who also has something new to plug but I forget what) Because she's so much more than just a singer who sings upside down apparently, she "has something to say".
What is that something? I have no idea, but I know she has something to say because in the piece she told me she has something to say and who am I not to take her word for it?

And the annoying part is that these are so obviously publicist-arranged stories that can and will be found on 15 other shows in the next week or so rather than the unique stories that for years
have set this show apart from the rest. Just because you CAN get someone on your show isn't necessarily a good reason to go and do so.

Care to reveal the identity of your big shot friend?

It was a coincidence. We recently "cut the cord" and my wife picked up the CBS service because there are a number of shows on that channel she enjoys, and it's the only network to not "play ball" and have an on-demand version on our new service of all of the major networks.

Yeah, I'm a Star Trek fan but screw them. And to cynically air one episode on 'free' TV to entice people to buy their crappy service was like dealers giving their marks a free bag of heroin to lure them in. I refused to watch that episode.
