Vital slice-of-life black-experience portrait, through a contemporary black man's coming-of-age struggle? Intensely-- almost TOO intensely?-- personal visual tone-poem on race, family, sexuality and everything? Affecting, beautifully-rendered little identity/love story? Well, yes.

I liked it a lot. Saw it a few months ago and various scenes have floated back into my thoughts. The transition into each of the characters totally worked for me and the third one was heartbreaking. The visual palette, the music, the performances all worked for me. Was the mother character familiar from other drug-addict movies? Yes, sure, but that didn't make it any less powerful for me, plus her transition throughout the three stages was expertly played (I heard that the actress, who is, I think, Irish, only had four days in the country to rehearse and shoot all of those scenes).
