Across the Diamond

I have to say that I hate the "Move him to first!" drumbeat.

None of us knows how Wright's arm is going to respond.

Moving a player with diminishing offensive value to an easier defensive position hurts your team more, not less. Sure, let him play some first, but if he can't hit good enough to keep his position at third, he belongs on the bench, rather than knocking Lucas Duda out of the lineup.

Even if his defense isn't there, offense is worth about 333% more than defense.

All of this was true during the extended drama of moving Piazza to first. Sure, let an aging and hobbled batsmith play first some times, as an alternative (defensive versatility is good!), but as a full-time move, it's a move for a move's sake.

One of the best assets the Mets have had the last two years is the Nationals using Ryan Zimmerman at first. Don't be like the Nats.

If evidence suggests that he somehow manages to find enough offense to hit like a firstbaseman, but has lost all of his third base defensive skill, then sure. Go for it. But mistaking premature decisions for boldness is just shoot-yourself-in-your-foot counterproductive.

This was a particularly poorly written post.

It may win if we have a "goofy expression" subcategory.

Re: Across the Diamond

There's been a certain percentage of Met fans who have been seeing a Wright-to-1st move as a "solution" (to something or other, I've never quite been sure what) and have been advocating
for it since about his 2nd year.
Now there's at least the issue that his throwing will be the last thing to come around (if it does at all) but, as already said, unless he is going to play every game and out hit Duda in the process, or
a trade comes up where we ransom big Lucas for a Chris Sale-like package of prospects, even this doesn't justify the rush.
"What the heck are they waiting for?" Oh I dunno, maybe a good reason!

Yup. And considering that his condition dictates that his time on the field must be limited, there is a compelling reason to be efficient with his practices. Have him work on what you know he will need to do. Not something he maybe, someday, might have to try.

If you need a Duda replacement, sign Kelly Johnson!
