Forseeing Seventeen: Asdrubal Cabrera

The weird part wasn't that I was better than most expected last season. That certainly was good. The weird part is that I kept getting better as the season progressed. Now I'm in my walk year, with the team carrying a second starting shortstop to use as a utility player, and 2-3 shortstop prospects and one uber prospect are pushing at me from below.

All that competition plus a little offseason chance to rest up and recover from my injuries could make me ... better? In 2017? Really?

What do you think?

My favorite Met of 2016. It seems likely that 2017 will be Asdrubal's final year with the Mets, unless Amed Rosario gets stalled somehow.

For 2017, I'll say .270, 18 homers in 140 games.

Best NYM Asdrubal ever!!

The team does have an option on him for 2018: $8.5 mil with a $2 mil buyout (iow, an additional $6.5 mil to keep him) one that possibly could get picked up for a variety of reasons.
Rosario could stall or maybe they'd want to keep a vet SS on the roster while breaking him in; or Cabrera could switch to 2B or 3B and play alongside Rosario depending on what the needs as those spots are by '18

Or they can pick up the option just to shop him around. That always works out!

I'd expect them to pick that up, at the very least they'd get something worthwhile in a trade unless he has a terrible year. Average+ infielders with average defense are way more valuable than say, 1-tool slugging outfielders.

I don't expect him to be like last year. It seems like he made some adjustments here, but repeating career years is unlikely.

140 games. 15 HR, .270/.326/.461 2.5 fWAR. passable defense. One Walkoff double. (Reyes removes his helmet)

Re: Forseeing Seventeen: Asdrubal Cabrera

I think I had forgotten about the option.

Kristie Ackert reported that the Mets and Neil Walker are willing to discuss an extension that would keep Walker in New York for at least a few years beyond 2017. I'm no longer clear on who the second baseman of the future is expected to be now that Dilson is gone. If Walker leaves, I guess Cabrera could shift to second for 2018. And there's always Wilmer Flores. Is L.J. Mazzilli still considered a prospect?

Re: Forseeing Seventeen: Asdrubal Cabrera

I feel like Cecchini is being overlooked by like, everyone. It's entirely possible that I'm overestimating him, I know the org (based on Tim Tuefel's comments) doesn't really believe he's a shortstop, but the kid's only 21 and had a real good year at AAA, and at least once last year really ripped the shit out of the ball with the Mets.

I really thought he'd be the second baseman this year. Mazzilli I think might one day be a backup but his star is fading fast.

As for Cabrera, he really had a great year that based on his career could be hard to repeat.

15-60, .252-322-450. I think in September he'll be giving up time to Rosario and resting those knees for the playoffs

Re: Forseeing Seventeen: Asdrubal Cabrera

Yeah the talk of the Walker extension (however tentative and exploratory) kind of surprised me, especially seeing as how there are other options at 2B.
And while Cecchini is maybe not an everyday SS on an upper level team -- plus with Rosario on the brink it's tough to figure him as one on this team at all -- that doesn't mean he hasn't got an ML future in front of him in some capacity whether it's a as a part-timer, or at another IF position, or as trade bait for another team.

As always, it'll all get determined by how this year goes, for Cecchini, for Walker, for the team, and at least a half-dozen other what-ifs.

The knee worries me, but when he plays he'll be good. .270/18/60.

Re: Forseeing Seventeen: Asdrubal Cabrera

After the snub from his countrymen, he'll be mad. We won't like him (as much) when he's mad.

520 PA, .262/.321/.430, 57 R, 18 HR, 60 RBI, a bit more iffy with the glove

Re: Forseeing Seventeen: Asdrubal Cabrera

I'm afraid (and simply won't) to go look at last years predictions from me.
Love this guy, gimme another year like last and expect a 12.375% dip for age.

Re: Forseeing Seventeen: Asdrubal Cabrera

I know that for some reason Asdrubal seems like an older player (he does to me anyway), but he'll actually play the entire 2017 season at age 31 having had the calendar flip on him to
that number during the off-season.
So while we may see some regression to the mean (his 2016 OPS was some 60 points above his career norm) he's not a likely candidate for any kind of drastic age-related decline.
