Who's on First Data?

In a move that should be a surprise to no one, but will nonetheless take some getting used to, Mets officials have announced a new name for their Spring Training home. Tradition Field, formerly Digital Domain Park, formerly Tradition Field, formerly Thomas J. White Stadium, will henceforth (or until the money changes hands a few more times) be known as First Data Field.

Gary Carter Stadium, man. It would be a license to print money.

Re: Who's on First Data?

well, this seems like more of a license to print money to be honest.

10 year deal supposedly.

I thought this was a clever play on words about Lucas Duda in the series of player predictions.
At least you had Who playing the proper position.

Well, yes, I'm offering a more out-of-the-box (and more palatable and honorable) way to obtain money to those who pursue money.

Psychology.

I guess it depends on your definition of palatable and honorable. Advertising versus trying to turn your dead alum's name into gold by selling it.

Surely you'll please see that I was not suggesting the ballpark be named in Carter's honor because of potential income, but on the merits of the honor alone, and was only bringing up potential income to counter the notion of a financial challenge that a team faces in forgoing awarding naming rights to a corporate sponsor.

Sure. but that ship has sailed imo, teams are looking for the revenue. They're not going to ax a revenue stream, and working from there, any "Maybe we can make the money by leveraging Carter" is mining him for money. Especially after the fact. It'd be different if it was 5 years ago and they decided to name it that, especially if they bought out the naming rights contract.
