Run, Rabbit, Run: The 2017 Running Thread

Finished January with a cool 99 miles run. Still dealing with lingering soreness from a pothole I stepped into in mid December, but it's gradually getting better. Ran without an ankle brace on Monday for the first time in a month.

Got a 5k on tap for this coming Sunday and a half marathon three weeks later. Pretty well stretched out -- ran an easy ten miles this past Sunday at about an 8:30 pace and felt all right throughout, aside from some ankle tightness the last mile or two.

Re: Run, Rabbit, Run: The 2017 Running Thread

i logged about 40 miles. about one of them on a treadmill, three of them underdressed in new hampshire, and three of them with minimm. those last three were the best by far.

between my incessant travel of late, winter, fatness, laziness, kitchenlessness, kids, and running with kids, my running is all out of whack. i think i need to establish saturdays as my long day, and sunday as my minimm day.

i do love running with the kid though. he's gotten better and noticeably stronger already, with all our local hills. and i'm being very careful not to push him to run when he doesn't feel like it, and taking breaks along the way where needed. but i am generally making him run up the hills, and also take advantage of the downhills.

D-Dad and I are departing for Puerto Rico this weekend and will be on the Caribbean Running Cruise. His speedwalking is around my running pace these days, so we'll be participating in the events together. We'll have runing events in San Juan, St. Croix, St. Maarten, Barbados and Grenada.

I also keep having to use all of my willpower to resist the link to enter the lottery for the New York City Marathon. My tired, aging body is not up for the challenge; my brain knows that, but my heart keeps wanting to press the button....

If you want to enjoy the experience vicariously through me you're welcome to put me up on your couch, and help me get to and from the start/finish that day! (if I get in of course :) I'm on attempt #4 at this damn lottery).

I wish I lived close enough for that to be feasible. I sprung for a hotel room in the City the year I ran the Marathon.

I am still trying to get to the gym 3-4 times a week to work out and run. I have opted to slow the pace of my runs to see if it will reduce the frequency of nagging aches and pains. I got to the gym 13 times and ran a total of 63.9 miles.

Re: Run, Rabbit, Run: The 2017 Running Thread

First race of the year, the "Super Couch Potato 5k" here in Syracuse, is in the books.

I ran a 21:50 to finish 45th out of 481 runners and 7th out of 27th in my age group. I was happy to break 22 minutes as that is my usual litmus test for whether or not I ran this distance well. I was also happy to have broken 22 minutes in a 5k on this course, which I have never done in this park, having done this specific event five times as well as a number of times for other 5ks.

"Action" shot of me coming in towards the finish.

D-Dad and I are back from the Caribbean Running Cruise. We had a fantastic time! For the most part these are fun runs (they actually are timed, but the participants don't have access to the results), so there's a very relaxed vibe. Runners World veterans John Bingham and Jenny Hadfield head these events, and do a great job encouraging runners of all types while making the events entertaining. We had events in San Juan, St. Croix, St. Maarten, Barbados and Grenada - D-Dad speedwalked while I ran, which worked out well for us. This photo was taken after our final event - a pirate-themed scavenger hunt in Grenada that finished on the ship. Note that the race medals double as bottle openers -

And D-Dad has upped his Walter Wolf image with some Metsian gear -

We had a great week and can't wait to do it again next year (same group, same ship but for the most part different islands).

I just signed up for the Peachtree 10K in Atlanta on July 4th. I'll combine that with a trip to the new stadium there (not a Mets game, but at least I'll have a chance to visit the new place). It's the world's largest 10K, and something of a big deal from what I understand.

Very nice! I have a friend or two who have done it and speak well of it.

Ran a nearly carbon copy of January, finishing February with 98.9 miles. Feeling good, all lingering issues from my December ankle twist are resolved.

Once again, rejected for the NYC marathon. Thinking about going the charity route, while I am in marathon shape. Looking specifically at those charities with a $2500 floor, as some of them range more towards $3000-3500 and wondering just how hard it'd be to raise those funds.

With the right charity, $3,500 isn't as hard as it sounds.

People can be surprisingly generous when you're running for a good cause.

Track season again for my granddaughter. She's a freshman running on her high school team. She now runs the 800, the 4X800 relay, the 1500 (which she won last week) and a race called a "3200".
I didn't know that's a real competition distance. But she ran it well enough to be representing her school in the league championship meet.

I ended up signing up for the Marine Corps Marathon, in Washington D.C., which I will run for the second time. I am still shopping for a second fall marathon -- I signed up for the Wineglass Marathon, here upstate, but then found that it conflicts with a family wedding, so I may return to run Philly in November.

My running has been shit for a year now.

Tore my left meniscus last spring, had surgery in August. Took me until November to be able to really ramp it up again. Then skiing in early February, took a nasty fall and hurt my right knee (probably tore that meniscus as well judging by the kind of discomfort). Have been struggling since just to get my stamina back after not running through the rest of February and most of March.

I'm trying, but this age thing isn't really cooperating either.

Re: Run, Rabbit, Run: The 2017 Running Thread

This weekend I will be in Maryland for a post-Passover visit with family, and while I usually try to find a 5k or 10k race to run, I didn't see any in town that looked particularly well organized or appealing.

Then I happened to read a Runners' World article about parkrun.

This is a series of timed, free 5k runs, that all take place in parks. Generally speaking a parkrun is established and then held in the same park, course and location each week. It's fairly new to the US, there are just 9 official parkruns right now in the states, but they are hugely popular in England, Australia, South Africa and some other European countries.

It's simple -- you sign up for a free account, which gets you an ID # and a scannable bar code. You bring a printout of your bar code to the parkrun, and they beep it when you finish and post the results. No race bib, and minimal frills. Most end with a post-run hop to a local cafe.

Runners' results get put into a global database which will keep track of your personal best, how many parkruns you've done, and so on. Do more than 50 and you get a shirt for yourself.

The whole thing is very communal and cool.

Well doesn't there just happen to be one in Maryland, not 30 minutes from our hotel? So I signed up! Better yet there will be a mini CPF meet up as Nymr, who is local, will be planning to meet me there for a run!

It's always fun to find a new kind of run/race/event to participate in.

Re: Run, Rabbit, Run: The 2017 Running Thread

a new run/race/event? what the shit is that? i just keep going back to the same watering hole over and over and over again!

wait, i sound jaded. sorry... moving on.

for spring break, the mm's went down to florida to visit the mm-in-laws. for hte second half of our trip, we went to the house of the mouse, walt disney world, to run the star wars half marathon, as well as the 10k and 5k preceding it. gotta get those extra medals, especially the ones that look like death stars. since minimm is now a 5k runner, who loves all things star wars, we signed him up for the 5k as well.

when we asked minimm about it, i think he joked that we should dress up like storm troopers. i'm not sure whose idea it was, actually. but hte idea was floated about running in some sort of costume. normally, i would hate that. but hey, it's star wars. ultimately, we settled on me running the 5k as han solo - with running-shorts fitted with a correllian blood stripe, mrs.mm dressed as princess leia, and minimm dressed as chewbacca. we'd found a chewie-print running short for him, so he wasn't dressed all in fur for hte heat and humidity normally associated with florida.

minimm had a blast, and did a very good job of maintaining a consistent pace; we had two water stops along the way and also mixed in three short walk breaks. as we started to approach the finish line, with maybe 200m to go, i suggested to minimm that he turn on the jets and run hard to the finish. he complained that he had nothing in the tank. then he looked and saw the finish line, after a few beats realized just how close it was, and took off like a rocket. he crossed the line at about 41:20, and didn't really seem tired. he was very proud of the medal he earned - a nice solid metal one, not rubbery plastic like the disney 5k's of the past - his "first grown-up medal" he called it.

then we walked around the magic kingdom for like 5 miles later that day.

the next morning was earth day. which, as you might recall, was also the march for science. we thought we might as well throw a bone in that direction. and while we didn't dress as star wars characters, we decided to pay homage to two other famous disney-property scientists - dr. bunsen honeydew for mrs.mm, and his faithful assistant, beaker for me. meep meep. let me tell you, that was the last time i shall ever run a race in a lab coat! but no matter, we ran it in 1:15:30 or so, faster than the 5k, but still pretty easy.

then we walked around epcot for like 5 miles later that day.

finally, sunday morning. half marathon day. oh, and also about 70 degrees and humid at the start. at 5:30. yikes. so, considering the weather, our general state of training (not nearly enough nor as focused as it really should be), and the preceding days of running and parking, we figured 2:30 might be a lofty goal. i'm wearing a drath vader-print technical t-shirt, and mrs.mm is a simlarly attired in a stormtrooper technical t-shirt. we ran at what felt like a comfortable pace, stopping for plenty of waters and powerades along the way. as dawn approached, the humidity lifted a smidge, but the temperature hadn't quite risen much, and it felt relatively ok weatherwise. still hot, but not oppressive. we considered our pace at the time, and it projected as a little faster than we'd expected. we decided to let it ride, and get as far and as fast as possible, because it wasn't the mileage or the effort that was going to undo us, but the weather. and once the sun came up, all bets would be off. aside from some bathroom breaks (we were drinking a lot of water just to keep up with our sweat) and a character photo-op, we had settled consistently into the mid-low 10:00 range. as we exited disney's hollywood studios at 11 miles in, we thought briefly, hey, maybe we could get this in at 2:25! it would take a bit of a push, but what the hell, right? fatigue was setting in a bit, but the path from hollywood to epcot runs through the boardwalk hotel area, our favorite spot in the entirety of the rodent's grand universe - a natural energy boost. there was a slight chance that minimm and the µmms would cheer us on, but as it turns out, they were still all in their beds, just barely stirring awake - the lazy bums! so we coast on around the boardwalk, enter into epcot, and then make a turn to go the long way arouind the world showcase. hmm... i was expecting to be a little closer, and to avoid that bridge into paris, but no matter. we hustle our way around the last mile. my phone was running about a half mile long overall - not too bad an error rate - and it claims our mile 13 (approx from mile 11.5-12.5 in the real race) was run at a 9:33 pace. pretty good. it claims that our last 6/10th of a mile (from 12.5 to the finish) came in at about an 8:30 pace. was not expecting that! we finished with a time of approximately 2:26:05. just like a stormtrooper to miss her mark ha! afterwards, we felt surprisingly well. a little tired, of course, but not overly beat up.

then we walked around hollywood studios for like 5 miles.

the next day we flew home, landed around 1:30, got home at 3:30 after stopping off at the doctor's to confirm that µmmR had indeed contracted strep throat for like the billionth time since october, and then at 5:00 i got in the car to pick up a bag of soccer equipment, balls, & uniforms for minimm's soccer team that i will be coaching, and drove 5 hours up to new hampshire for work. a hell of a marathon travel day to follow up the half!

after the race, we both decided that for our next long distance race, we should do a better job of actually training for these things. as much fun as it is being a participant, it much better to feel like an actual competitor. also, my running is so much less efficient a the slower pace, which beats up my feet something fierce.

just need now to figure out what that next race should be....

Re: Run, Rabbit, Run: The 2017 Running Thread

Nice recap as always!

The parkrun ended up being a very cool little event. Turn out was light due to humidity, it was quite muggy. They average 65-75 runners most weeks, but had just 41 finishers this past Saturday.

In any event it was a nice little jaunt through a park that runs along a golf course and through some other scenic wooded areas. I pushed too hard in miles one and two (6:52 and 7:04) and then eased up for the last mile, a 7:35, because I was just gassed out. I still finished inside of 22 minutes, at 21:49, though the course also measured just a shade short of 3.11 miles on my watch (3.05, by my count). Came in 7th out the 41 participants.

Had some friendly post race banter with Nymr, as well. Always good to have some face time with y'all.

Re: Run, Rabbit, Run: The 2017 Running Thread

Edited 1 time(s), most recently on May 26 2017 01:17 PM

Yesterday I ran my final half marathon ever.

I know I've said that before, but this time I really mean it. Not with regret, but with celebration that I did it on a high note.

Last year I ran the Bermuda Triangle Challenge, which involved a one-mile run on the Friday night, a 10K on the Saturday and your choice of a marathon or half marathon on the Sunday. However, I didn't have a chance to really enjoy my accomplishment - as soon as I finished the half marathon finish line and collected my medals (one for the race and a special triangle medal for completing all three races) I was tapped on the shoulder and sent to the medical tent to meet D-Dad, who had wiped out on a scooter while I was running.

So I decided to return to Bermuda for a different race. The Bermuda Day Half Marathon was not open to non-Bermudians until just a few years ago, which made it tempting. In addition, the course alternates each year between starting on the eastern end of the island and starting on the west; I had always been intrigued by the idea of running from St. George's to Hamilton, and this year that was the course. It would be an impossible course to run in normal traffic conditions; as it is there was still some traffic on parts of the course (the one thing I dislike the most about racing in Bermuda), but it was much less than usual and the vehicles knew to look out for the runners.

In addition to the traffic, the hills were formidable (the course from the west is somewhat flatter) and the heat index was high.

So I should have had a miserable. time. Except I didn't. Because it was Bermuda. I had some friends running the race, which helped pass the time before the race began. There were nine water stops on the course, which were much appreciated. But the main thing was the crowd support - the entire course was lined by people cheering on the runners. Many of them had the list of the runners by number, so several people cheered me on by name. I haven't seen such crowd support since the New York City Marathon, and it was amazing.

I finished the race in 3:07.19 - not my slowest half (that honor is reserved for my race in Cuba) but not a great time. I walked a lot more than I had planned on, but ultimately got myself to the finish line well in advance of the three and a half hour time limit. I am more than ready to be done with this distance, but very happy to have finished up on a high note.

Re: Run, Rabbit, Run: The 2017 Running Thread

After forty five attempts, I was finally able to run a half marathon in less than 100 minutes.

I came close a few years ago, running a 1:40:50 back in 2014 on a super flat course here in town, just a couple of weeks after a full marathon and still in a "stretched out" fashion. That was my only sub 1:41 until a few days ago, though I've been in the low 1:41's the last few times out.

This past weekend I drove to Buffalo for their half marathon, that is affiliated with the Buffalo Marathon. I ran the full back in 2015 and enjoyed the first half of the course far more than the second. So I decided to return to just run the half, as it's the first half of the full course. I knew the course and was hopeful that an early 6:30 AM start, combined with a promising forecast, would allow me to push for that sub 1:40.

Had a great dinner out the night before and a few cocktails, all normal pre race training, and watched the Mets shit themselves on Fox TV Saturday night before turning in.

Woke up Sunday and felt good, walked from my hotel the .8 or so miles to the start, and fell in behind the 1:40/3:20 half/full pace runner. I overheard a few other guys in his vicinity and one said, "Oh, if you're looking to stay at that pace, Jim (the pacer) is the man. He's like a metronome, he'll get you there on point."

So, my goal suddenly became to stay with the pacer, running about a 7:38 or so pace. I made polite chit chat with him and a few other runners who were trying to maintain that 1:40 or even a 3:20 pace (there were a few marathoners in our midst).

That pace worked for me, really, for the first 12 miles. I found myself getting gradually less conversational over the course of the first 10-11 miles, not entirely, but, as it got warmer and I felt more of the exertion of the miles, just went from being very chatty to less chatty.

The pace was never beyond my ability to keep up, and, in fact, I found it to be mostly a comfortable pace. The course is really pretty flat and had some nice breezes off of Lake Erie in the miles 8-11 range, which helped.

I realized I was on target to break 1:40 and I got gradually more excited as we got closer to the finish. My goal really became not hitting a pothole and twisting my ankle. I hit the last water stop and sucked down my second gel at the 12 mile mark and thanked the pacer, and picked it up to about a 7:20 for the last stretch. I came in at a chip time of 1:39:19, good enough to finish 142nd out of 2973 runners and 13th out of 140 in my age group. I felt truly like this was my best performance ever at this distance, not just for being my fastest half, but for hitting consistent splits and effort throughout. Every split I had was in between 7:20 (mile 12) and 7:39 (mile 11).

Managed to even get a moderately good in-race photo, for once.

The pacer, for what it's worth, finished in 1:39:59, which was his exact goal. The pacers had an incentive that the pacer who got the closest to their pace time without going over got a $50 gift card. I'd say Jim had it right! He told me (I ran into him post race, he handed off to another pacer for the 3:20 full pace group) that he knew his chip time was more like a 1:39:40, but he wants the clock time to show him crossing at the one-second-off point each time. I may try to run a local fall as a pacer -- the guy provided a cool service and I think I could comfortably pace a 1:45, 1:50, 1:55 or 2:00 half group at some point if I'm just using the race as a training run (I'd lean to the 1:50 or 1:55 group, times easier for me to keep without feeling like I'm pushing too hard or dialing it too far down).

Re: Run, Rabbit, Run: The 2017 Running Thread

damn, that's terrific!

memorial day weekend marks the annual spring lake 5 mile run, which we've done pretty much every year this century. and for the past few years, the little one(s) have been running the kids races.

this year, µmmL&R were in the 3-year old bracket, while old man minimm ran with the 7 year olds. the twins didn't have to go very far. maybe 50 m or so, while the 7 year olds had about a quarter mile.

we were running ritualistically late, and managed to just rush µmmL&R into the corral in time for the last wave of their start. and... well... they were having none of it. µmmL decided to grudgingly walk the whole way, holding mrs.mm's hand. µmmR however, was a bit more stubborn, and latched himself to my leg. i pulled him gingerly towards the finish line, and as we got to within a few yards, he realized the end was near, slipped loose his grip... and just stood there. i had to go get him, pick him up, and carry him across the finish line. pleased with himself, he happily took his finishers' medal.

minimm ran a good race himself. i was positioned about midway along the course. I couldn't quite catch the start, though i suspect he started out a bit slow. he started picking up speed as he waved and passed me, and put on the jets for the finish. a few kids finished ahead of him, but who's counting. he ran well, and was happy with his effort. probably need to get him running more at that type distance instead of a slower 5k-type speed! but whatevs. exercise is exercise! running is running, and as long as he's having fun!

mrs.mm and i ran the SL5. we started back off hte line a ways, not really expecting to run fast. and we didn't. i guess in theory we could have run faster than 52:20, but it woud have taken a ton of effort to fight through the crowds. we felt fairly jammed in until the last mile! but it was still a fun race, and a family tradition.

and hey, now it's summer. in case the 60-odd degrees of damp raininess didn't give it away.

Re: Run, Rabbit, Run: The 2017 Running Thread

On July 4th I'm running the Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta. It has a wave start, with staggered start times, so getting into the best corral possible means less time running in the Atlanta heat. Participants have the option of submitting a finish time from the past two years in order to get a wave placement (those who don't submit a time are assigned to one of the last corrals), and the wave times are recalculated each year. Last September I chose a flat local 5K to submit as my qualifying race, and I pushed hard to get my best finish time in a few years - 33:11.6. Based on last year's wave standards I figured it would be good enough for Wave J, but this year there was a new cutoff for Wave H - 33:12. Thus, I qualified for the earlier wave by .4 of a second, which makes me incredibly happy!

Re: Run, Rabbit, Run: The 2017 Running Thread

For the second straight week, I set a personal best at a running distance, this time running a 21:24 5k at the Paige's Butterfly Run 5k. This is the first race that I ran, back in 2010, and I've done it now for 8 straight years. I beat my previous personal best by 1 second!

That time earned me a 45th overall place, out of 1613 runners, and a 3rd place ribbon for being the 3rd M40-44 out of 41 who participated. It feels good to win an age group award out of such a large field of runners, I'm not going to lie to you.

No other races on the calendar, currently, for June, though I'm running a 10 miler and a 15k both in early July.

Re: Run, Rabbit, Run: The 2017 Running Thread

Great job!

Been meaning to post that I ran the Corporate Challenge last week. My first organized run since I can remember. It was kind of tough, we stood around for about 45 minutes stiffening up while waiting to start, but it was fun once it started.

I still don't run often, and when I do, it's usually intervals (sprint, jog, sprint, jog). And never for this type of distance (3.5 miles). I ran at 8:36 per mile, which is great for me. Much faster than when I workout. I guess it's the adrenaline, the high of running in a "race", etc. I felt so good after finishing that I walked home (a decision I regretted the next day). But what incredible fun. For all the runners on this board, I see why you do it.

The next day, big stupid me sent an email to the committee with suggestions on how we could make the event better next year, and of course, got put in charge of organizing it. What a stupid I am.

That's awesome!

The local Corp Challenge in Syracuse is today, but our company is not participating. We had two upper level execs who were very fitness oriented but they've both retired since last year, so there was no one local to approve the spending.

It's a bummer. I'd have missed it anyway because Fboy has a concert tonight at school, but still. It sends the wrong message. I enjoyed it much each of the last 5 years we participated.

Re: Run, Rabbit, Run: The 2017 Running Thread

Tomorrow I'm running the New York Mini 10K for the seventh time. It's undergone several name changes, but it was established in 1972 and is the oldest women's only road race in the world. Founded by Fred Lebow, who truly wanted to bring running to the masses and whom I suspect might have been the love child of P.T. Barnum, the first running of the Crazylegs Mini Marathon, as it was known at the time, featured Playboy bunnies at the start. However, the women who ran the race (including Kathrine Switzer, not all that long after her famous/infamous Boston Marathon run) demonstrated that women could participate in distance racing without developing the vapors, losing uteruses (look it up - I'm seriously not making this up) or otherwise suffering immediate and apparent physical harm. Every time I line up for the start of this race and hear the stories of the women who came before me I get goosebumps, and I am deeply thankful for the trailblazers who put themselves out there so that someone of my limited athletic abilities can have the opportunity to partake in racing.

Note that the first time I ran the Mini, in 2010, there was no medal. After Grete Waitz's death in 2011 NYRR first commemorated her with a Mini medal, and the Mini has had finisher's medals ever since.

That's pretty awesome! Do you have any races that you have done annually for a longer amount of time? I just hit my first 8 year streak, on my initial 5k. There are a handful of races I've also done each year since 2011 that I have or will be hitting 7 years in a row on.

That would be awesome! And D-Dad is going to be at the finish line also - I hope to see you guys there!

I haven't run the Mini every year. I missed it in 2014 (IIRC that was the weekend of MK's prom and D-Dad and I volunteered that Friday night/Saturday morning at the post-prom party). And I may not run it every year in the future, just because the logistics of getting into the City for an 8 am race basically require us to spend the previous night in a hotel. But I definitely plan to do the 50th running in 2021 and the 50th anniversary in 2022, because those are noteworthy milestones. I don't have any really long consecutive year streaks in local races (lots of scheduling conflicts, especially with MK's marching band activities taking precedence some years), but I have run a couple of local races 11 times.

Which races are your streak races? Perhaps I can meet you at one of them one day :) And congratulations - it takes a lot to do a race year in and year out!

That would be super fun!

Each year since 2010:

Paige's Butterfly Run 5k (an early June flat tour of Syracuse that leads right into one of the best days of the year, the Taste of Syracuse, an all day eating/drinking/live music thing that I love).
Turkey Trot Thanksgiving morning in Baldwinsville, NY (done either the 5k or 10k each year since 2010 and both the 5k and 10k each year since 2011)

Each year since 2011:

Shamrock Run 4 miler (first Saturday in March, always stupid cold, very hilly 4 mile course through the Syracuse "Tipp Hill" Irish neighborhood)
Mountain Goat 10 miler (Syracuse's premier distance race, held for 40+ years now) - a bad ass ten miles of hills all around Syracuse
Boilermaker 15k (Utica) - a 15k that has 12-14k runners, plus another 3-4k doing a 5k, and ends with free beer and live music. An annual fave
Eastwood Parks Run - a great fall 5 miler in yet another quiet Syracuse suburb, pretty fall colors

Each year since 2012 (you'll notice I picked up the longer distances in the 2012 calendar year):

Lake Effect Half Marathon - 13.1 miles along Onondaga Lake, in Februrary. Done this in a few blizzards.
Cazenovia Fourth of July Footrace -- I did the 5k in 2012 and the ten miler, completely circling Cazenovia Lake, each year since 2013. That one ends with a swim in the lake, weather permitting. Another hilly 10 miler.
Tromptown Half Marathon - a 13.1 along beautiful hilly country roads, that's always on a Thursday night, and ends at the local "Fireman Field Days" with beers and burgers and shitty local bands. A hoot!
Chilly Half Marathon - a 13.1 in Newton, MA, though this streak is ending because this race is not being held this year :(
It's a Wonderful Run 5k -- a fast flat 5k course in Seneca Falls, themed on the file "It's a Wonderful Life," believed to have inspired the fictional town of Bedford Falls. When the roads are clear, it's a fast track (I've been sub 22 minutes there for 3 years running) - though I've also done this one in wintry mixes (held 2nd Saturday in December, at dusk).

There are a lot of other races that I've done 4 of the last 5, 5 of the last 6, etc. but have missed for one reason or another. All of the streaks I mentioned I am on track to continue in 2017, with the exception of the Chilly Half.

Re: Run, Rabbit, Run: The 2017 Running Thread

I did make it to the Mini this morning. My slowest Mini yet - 1:23:10. Between the sudden shift to warm weather and my age catching up with me, I decided to take things easy on the course. The upside of that is that I'm feeling very good in the aftermath of the race. Sorry to have missed CF and the Fields - let me know if you'll be doing the race on July 27th in the park?

On a sad note, though, after I got home I charged my old iPod. But as soon as it finished charging, it died on me! It had a good, long life and got me through a lot of miles. It would have been nice, though, if it had lasted me through the Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta next month. RIP and gratitude to an important part of my running history -

On Edit - When I came home after dinner this evening, the iPod started working again! It may be on its last legs, but if it gets me through Atlanta I'll be a very happy camper.

It is a really nice medal. I thought it was a super event, and very well organized. Such positive vibes around the whole thing. My wife enjoyed it a lot, and next year she is recruiting a group to run with her. An associate at her firm finished 30th overall!

Cool - the ballpark in St. Louis is really nice. Have fun!

Luckily, after a few hours the iPod seems to have recovered. So long as it makes it through Atlanta and July 27th I'll be ready to bid it a fond farewell if its time is indeed over.

I'm glad that Mrs. Field enjoyed the Mini so much - it is truly a special event. Kudos to her associate on such an amazing finish! One nice thing, from a slower runner's perspective, is that the first mile is on Central Park West - it's really wide, so by the time we enter the park the pack has spread out a bit. It's indeed very well organized race with a true sense of its place in history. And yes, it got awfully hot awfully fast out there - the pitfalls of racing this time of the year.

I'm not sure whether I'll be back next year, but I plan on participating in 2021 and 2022 for the 50th running and the 50th anniversary. By that point I'll likely be walking much more than running, but I want to be a part of those events!

From the Peachtree Road Race's Participant Instructions manual - seriously!

THE FOLLOWING ITEMS ARE PROHIBITED AT ATLANTA TRACK CLUB EVENTS:

• Glass containers
• Wheeled conveyances
• Pets
• Containers holding more than one liter of liquid
• Backpacks
• Camelbaks (fuel belts and hand held water bottles are allowed)
• Rolling bags and other luggage
• Masks and costumes that are not form fitting
• Weight vests
• Military equipment
• Firefighter equipment
• Drones

DISCOURAGED ITEMS

• Earbuds

My guess is that there's a law specifically protecting the right to carry firearms outdoors, so they can't prohibit firearms. There was a similar issue here last year at the Republican National Convention, which led to a weird situation where toy guns were prohibited, but real guns weren't.

So the Peachtree Road Race is on Tuesday. My start time for Wave H is 8:05. I'm grateful for that - those who didn't submit times and who are in the later waves can start as late as 9:10. On a July morning in Atlanta, I have to believe that an hour will make a huge difference in the race's misery index.

Not miserable is the race medal. This is a race where getting the finisher's medal is optional; I decided to spring for it because this will likely be my one and only Peechtree race. Because I decided to have my bib mailed to me (an excellent decision in hindsight, since D-Dad's shoulder surgery would make driving downtown to the race expo a poor idea), the medal also arrived in the mail. It's a lovely medal - now I just have to earn it -

It's a bit odd that they send you the medal before the event, though, if it's optional, I suppose you have to do it that way, since they can't know at the finish who did or didn't opt in for the medal.

I'll be running that day also, there's a ten miler around Cazenovia Lake that I've done the last several years, that's usually hotter than dickens. There's also a 5k that starts 45 minutes prior and I'm debating doing them both so as to get in an unofficial half marathon.

Very nice!

I had a buddy come in to town who used to run with my run club, but moved to the Denver area 4-5 years ago, so I brought him out to Cazenovia with me and we ran at a conversational (for us) 8:10 or so per mile pace around the lake and chatting all the while.

I ended up running a 1:21:54 on a warm but pleasant morning, and we didn't really push the pace. It was my slowest time on this race in 4 years but that was fine, I had also run 5 and 6 miles the Monday/Saturday prior, and was just out to get some exercise in and enjoy the course.

We had that experience last November, a woman collapsed during the Chilly Half Marathon that we ran in Newton, MA, and passed away a few days after the race. My friends witnessed her being worked on by paramedics when they ran past. She was a healthy mom in her 30's with young kids and it happened on a cool, comfortable day.

I had a really good 5K-ish run this morning, despite the sauna like conditions.

I'm really feeling how state of mind makes a difference in running. For the past several weeks - basically since D-Dad's accident - I've been running like crap, and incorporating walking a heck of a lot more than I usually do. I was chalking it all up to the aging process, which is still likely a factor. But D-Dad is out of his sling, life around here is beginning to feel like normal again, and I'm not walking around exhausted all the time as I had been.

You can intellectually know that stress filters into your everyday life, but it's eye-opening when you actually feel the difference.

In May I was supposed to run 10K in Quebec City. Long story short, Delta cancelled my flight and couldn't get me into Canada until so late the next day that I would have missed packed pickup, so D-Dad and I cancelled the trip. But we're going to try it again - the final Sunday in August is the Quebec Marathon, and D-Dad and I will be participating in the associated 10K (He speed walks my running pace these days, so we'll do the race together). This time we're flying Air Canada - even with having to change planes in Montreal, we figure that this airline can offer us many more options if something goes wrong.

I've been studying French for a while, and am looking forward to putting my studies to good use in another week or so.

Running thread is a little lean on updates of late.

So I'll chime in.

I got accepted to run the Big Sur Marathon next April, a point to point 26.2 along the Pacific Coast from Big Sur to Carmel. Touted as the most scenic marathon in the USA and I've been reading about it in magazines for years, and figured, I might as well go and run it while I am in marathon shape. So my next several marathons are more or less all lined up at this point.

Marine Corps Marathon (Washington DC) - Oct 22, 2017
Philadelphia Marathon - Nov 19, 2017
Big Sur Marathon - Apr 29, 2018
Wineglass Marathon (Corning, NY) - Oct 2018 (signed up for 2017 but had to defer due to a wedding that day)
NYC - Nov 2018 - my intention is to attempt the lottery one more time, and if I do not get in, to accept a charity bib and start panhandling

That plus the normal compliment of half marathons, 5k's, duathlons, etc etc.

Re: Run, Rabbit, Run: The 2017 Running Thread

I'd cheer you along in Philly, but D-Dad and I just committed to the Bacardi 8K in Bermuda that weekend. it will be our third consecutive year doing the race - he'll do the competitive walk and I'll do the run. The walk starts a half hour before the run, so we'll both do the event but separately.

In 2015 D-Dad finished in a faster time than I did, due in no small part to the fact that I was recovering from food poisoning from my trip to Cuba. In 2016 I lost a lot of speed and D-Dad really started training for the walk - I beat him by 3 seconds, but he was the third fastest male walker and won a bottle of Bacardi 8. We couldn't take it home with us in our carry-on luggage, but the people at Bacardi said they would hold onto it for him until we returned to Bermuda. When we were there last May for the Bermuda Day Half Marathon he was able to collect his winnings -

I'm continuing my age-related slowdown, while D-Dad continues improving as a walker - I fully expect him to blow me away in this year's tiebreaker. But hey - any time I get to visit Bermuda I feel like a winner :)

D-Dad and I are back from Quebec, which is a lovely town, and we participated in the 10K associated with the Quebec Marathon. D-Dad speed walked while I ran, and we finished in 1:20:10 - not an exceptionally fast time, but nonetheless my fastest 10K of the year. The weather was perfect - in the mid-50's, sunny and not humid. There were three uphill inclines on the 10K course, but none of them was particularly steep. My largest complaint is that there were no clocks on the race course, so without a watch it was impossible to have a concept of one's pace. My second largest complaint is that this was the most nondescript race medal ever -

But ultimately I had a great time - I ran the entire time and felt good both doing it and in the aftermath.

Now on to the Bacardi in November!

ON EDIT - Our race photo.

Meanwhile, eek - 30-Year-Old Runner Dies After Collapsing During The Half Marathon

Stories like this scare the crap out of me. I wasn't shocked when a runner collapsed during the Peachtree Road Race, because that race was held under oppressively hot and humid conditions. But yesterday was a picture perfect morning in Quebec - cool and not at all humid. And this guy was only 30 years old - just terrible!

Solid August for me, 103 miles running and 139 cycling. No health problems of note. Banged out 17, 18 and 19 mile training runs the last three weekends and felt stronger each week. The Marine Corps Marathon is seven weeks from today.

i ran like 3 times in august, for a grand total of 13 miles. pitiful.

time and weekend activities have not been my friend, plus i think i strained my butt somehow.

what little running i have been doing has been garbage, too. or at least i felt like garbage doing it.

the underlying message of it all is that i'm getting older, so i should probably work on not getting fatter. that might help just a wee bit. we'll see what september brings, along with, all too soon, an updated age group.

Good mileage month for me in September as it included most of my long training runs for the upcoming Marine Corps Marathon. Finished September with 123.7 miles run and another 86 on bike. Marathon is in 19 days.

Re: Run, Rabbit, Run: The 2017 Running Thread

Big flop a roo for me at the MCM! I was nearly 19 full minutes slower than I was at the same event two years prior.

Not really a ton I could have done about it. It was 60 degrees at the start and climbed up into the mid 70's by the time I finished. I had hoped to run high 8's and come in under 4 hours, and was on track to do so until mile 21. The Marine Corps Marathon has two bridges, one as runners cross from Virginia to DC, around mile 5, and the other on the return voyage, mile 20-21. That second bridge is a killer. There's just no shade and nowhere to hide. I had to, for the last 5 miles, turn my low 9 pace to about an 11-12 minute pace, by incorporating 30 second walking breaks in as I went. It was just too hot to run continuously.

This is the second of the last three marathons I've done where I failed to break 4 hours, and in both situations, extreme heat are (I'd like to believe) largely to blame. I ended up running a 4:08:59, and averaged a 9:22 pace for the 26.6 miles I ran.

I felt better, tonight, when I looked up my times compared to other runners. There were 20,125 finishers, but only 850 of them broke four hours. So I was in the majority in that sense. I was still able to finish 1,111th out of that group (top 6%) and 404th out of 1595 in my age group, just outside the top 25%. So, in that sense, I had a pretty good race.

I'm tight as hell tonight but nothing hurts. It's all normal post-race/post-long run soreness. I've got 27 days until the Philadelphia Marathon and I'm optimistic for better weather that day.

Re: Run, Rabbit, Run: The 2017 Running Thread

damned fine running!

i've been struggling to find time to run lately. seems like there's always so much going on. and meetings around and during lunchtime are no help whatsoever!

but yesterday i had the best run ever.

i talked minimm into going out for a run with me. 3 miles, no big deal. except for our hills, that is. i packed over 300' of up (and also down) into those 3 miles. and he handled it in stride! we had a brief walk break every half mile or so, but he pushed up each hill, and even had something in the tank for a good strong finish. we averaged a little under 11 minutes per mile for the full 3.1 miles. he didn't complain during the run, nor afterwards.

after we finished, i went out to sneak in an extra mile, and pretended that he was giving me all the same coaching and encouragement i was giving him on the last mile, and ran one of my best miles, largely uphill, in a good long while.

Sounds nice. Fgirl did a kids fun run with the elementary school last week -- they had four after school practices for training and then ran a mile on the local course the high school kids have their meets in, in a park close to home. She clocked in at just under 11 minutes and got a thrill from hearing kids and people who knew her cheering for her.

Plus, look at this kid's stride! I never took a single running photo like this in all my years.

Congrats to Fman99 on completing the Marine Corps Marathon! I ran the Marine Corps 10K the same day. My race covered some of the same ground but it was obviously over earlier so no one felt the heat that the Marathon runners felt. Numerous marathoners have commented on the heat and the lack of sufficient water stations. For me, the 6.2 miles were nice and cool and I felt great, so great that I could have run another 6. Lots of swag including a nice medal (but not as nice as what Fman99 received). The best part is that a Marine salutes you and drapes the medal over your neck.

That ending is pretty amazing. There's also the "blue mile," where you run for a half mile past placards of Marines KIA, followed by a half mile of those Marines' family members holding American flags and cheering for you. It's powerful stuff.

I see where MM's quote girl won herself the NYC marathon this past weekend.
Saw about 20 minutes of coverage in a condensed version being run later that afternoon, at which point the women were already at mile 22 or so and Flanagan was in a pack of 3 or 4.
She then laid down the next three miles in something like 5:12, 5:08, and 5:03 and it was no longer a contest.

Watched her finish. Very awesome. Good on her.

I ran 94 miles in October and biked another 66. At 1674 total miles for 2017 so far, though my current tracking site does not give me an easy way to count total ran/biked.

It looks like outdoor bike season is done based on the recent temps up here. Looking for cross training alternatives for my non running days as I've realized that the elliptical is dull as hell and I do not like the spin instructors at my current gym.

Re: Run, Rabbit, Run: The 2017 Running Thread

Redemption for me!

My last three marathons (Vermont City, Chicago, Marine Corps) have been my three slowest ever.

My three fastest marathons ever were three of the first four I completed, all in 2013-2014.

So I've been frustrated by a string of respectable finish times (mostly) but also disappointed to not be able to sustain the early successes I had.

I've come to the conclusion that the weather is the thing.

I completed the Philadelphia Marathon today in 3:45:12, my fastest marathon in over three years. While they were under a wind advisory and there were gusts upwards of 25-30 MPH, the temps consistently stayed in the mid-high 40's with varying spots of sun and cloud cover. Damn near ideal temps, in fact.

I hoped to sustain an 8:15 pace, more or less, and beat my personal best of 3:41 from 2014, but I fell apart the last few miles. The last 12 miles of the course are an out and back to Manayunk, north along the Schuykill and then south back towards the city. This stretch was largely headwinds, and the last two miles of that part of the course was wear I burned myself out. I felt good, physically, I just had to go slower.

I was pleased to have not walked any portions of the course besides the water stops.

Splits:

1 8:28.0
2 8:23.2
3 8:04.0
4 8:24.0
5 8:31.1
6 8:00.1
7 8:04.2
8 8:49.5
9 7:56.1
10 8:13.1
11 8:12.0
12 7:49.9
13 8:12.3
14 8:02.6
15 8:15.6
16 8:22.1
17 8:19.0
18 8:17.9
19 8:44.5
20 9:04.1
21 8:25.5
22 8:41.5
23 8:59.4
24 9:16.7
25 9:24.6
26 9:27.3

Finished just outside the top 25% overall and top 1/3 of my age group. Had some friends also running and spectating, which was also cool. Now a few days of rest before Turkey Trotting.
