Monday is Family Day in Canada. I like that idea.

Presidents Day is a combination of Washington's Birthday and Lincoln's Birthday. We used to celebrate them separately, but I guess some politicians didn't think they were important enough to have their own holidays.
We'll be spending Monday thinking of those two great Presidents and then realizing what we've got now. Scary.
But at least I won't be working.

Re: ---===>>>3-Way Weekend Check<<<===---

I was supposed to have Monday off. But one of my daughter's professors asked me to be a guest speaker. Then she asked me to speak in two other classes -- one at noon and the other at 5 p.m. So it's a full day on campus. But hopefully I can spend some time with my daughter. And I can get some work done in the library.

D-Dad is off. He's planning on playing golf.

Our son is also off. I'm sure his day will involve a trip to the gym and some quality time with video games.

Lincoln's birthday never was a national holiday on account of the southern states not being too keen on that idea. Prez's day got created when the gov't came up with the idea of shifting as
many holidays as possible to Mondays (early '70s?) and so George's day got shifted off his (supposed) actual b-day to the nearest convenient Monday and morphed into Prez's day with Abe's semi-holiday
going along for the ride. Memorial Day, which used to be May 31 no matter what day of the week that fell on, plus Labor Day (although I believe it always was a Monday) were the other Monday-only
holidays created by that act with MLK Day joining them when it was created years later.

IIRC, Veterans Day was initially Monday-ized too but objections to having it NOT be on the 11/11 anniversary scotched that idea after just a year or two, and of course there was never any thought
of moving Independence Day off of 7/4 even for lengthy weekend purposes.

The official federal holiday was and remains Washington's Birthday. The term "Presidents Day" is a popular but unofficial nickname.

So we'll be observing George Washington's birthday on February 20th, even though his birthday is really February 22nd, and Washington himself always celebrated his birthday on February 11th, which was the day he was born on the Old Style calendar.

Today is Yoko Ono's birthday.
Today would have been my mother-in-law's 99th birthday.
She sang as well as Yoko Ono.

Re: ---===>>>3-Way Weekend Check<<<===---

Wikipedia (so you know it's true) lists Yoko as being born on the 18th of February not the 20th but, regardless of the particular day, she is almost as old as your mother in law.
I had known Yoko was older than John but it must have slipped my mind as to how much seeing as how this was birthday #84!! John, if alive, wouldn't have turned 77 until this coming October.

And speaking of President's Day: This Guy is apparently Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Every once in a while I'll stumble over a name in BB-Ref that, like this one, has no background information and not even a full name and wonder what the story is behind that. I'm sure in some cases the player was in and out so quickly that no one actually knew, while in others the info might have simply been lost over time. Some though, in that much looser era, were playing under pseudonyms for any one of a variety of reasons. In this case young Dwight, apparently a pretty good HS player, wanted to earn a couple of bucks over the summer -- appropriately for a team called the Junction City Soldiers -- before going to college but didn't want a professional record to ruin his hopes of playing both baseball and football at West Point.

The record itself may be incomplete as the story that directed me to this talks about him playing for a couple of months not just 9 games, but that's the part of the official record that survives. He wound up playing both baseball and football at The Point only very briefly due to a football injury but at least they didn't throw him out on an honor violation due to his lying about being "a professional" prior to enrolling.
