In 1954, a U.S. marshal investigates the disappearance of a murderess who escaped from a hospital for the criminally insane.

Watched it during the storm yesterday. I saw it on regular TV with commercial interruptions, so it ran 3 hours. It does wheelies on the line between mystery and eerie(not quite horror).

I read this one, and enjoyed it. I don't think I saw the film but I can't remember now.

Dennis Lehane's excellent book , really liked that , the movie IIRC was enjoyable.

Yeah, liked the book more than the film. Second-string Scorsese though watchable enough.

The Departed is second-string Scorcese. This... is... what's the filmic equivalent of "pulp?" This is that.

Yes, I think he would make this movie so he can make the other ones?

in the "deluded protagonist" sub-genre (like JACOB'S LADDER, OCCURRENCE AT OWL CREEK BRIDGE, SIXTH SENSE, MEMENTO, BEAUTIFUL MIND, ENEMY, etc.), the plot's reliance on its twist ending makes it a one-trick pony. But its pretty well done, nonetheless.

Do you include Don't Look Now in that category? Of course, one movie trailer told viewers not to reveal the ending. It was Witness For the Prosecution. Later

no, i'm not talking about movies where the protagonist is just wrong about something, or surprised by something, but where s/he is unaware of something fundamental about themselves, like they are, in fact, insane or dead or fictional or dreaming or a figment of someone else's imagination. They're wrong about their own fundamental reality. Besides SHUTTER ISLAND, this includes such films as:

Nice list. What was the fundamental reality in Invaders from Mars? I don't recall the plot.

it was all a dream... or was it?

I didn't realize Forbidden Planet had a potentially fake reality. A monster projected unknowingly by the antagonist, sure, but not a whole universe.

Also, THE TRUMAN SHOW. Also also, mildly-charming indie/Serious Will Ferrell vehicle STRANGER THAN FICTION.

Definitely. I can't believe i missed those 2, since i really like them both.
Well, i was on the border about this one. It's not a false reality, but the scientist's realization that the monster is actually HIM is this sort of twist. But i could be talked out of it.

Edgy MD Mar 28 2017 09:47 AM Re: Shutter Island (2010) |
It might be a better fit if the scientist was the protagonist.

yes, i agree.
According to both the play and the movie, the rabbit is real, so it doesn't count.

Edgy MD Mar 28 2017 10:50 AM Re: Shutter Island (2010) |
That's crazy. There's no rabbit.

Love what this thread has turned into , I would give Shutter Island and extra half star for that
