The Edge of Seventeen: René Rivera

I was acquired just as the season started, opened the year as the third-string catcher, and for patches of the summer, ended up with the first string. That may not have been the way the plan was meant to shake out, but it was fine by me. I know, you're thinking that the ceiling isn't very high with this guy, but the floor isn't that low.

Gets 101 AB but mostly doesn't play and spends a lot of time in Vegas.

Several stories coming out of Spring Training have been about how Travis is throwing better and the pitchers have been learning how to hold runners on first better.

Yeah, I guess they ain't gonna pay him $2 mil to be a desert zeek. I'm never wrong, sometimes.

Agreed. Plawecki's done nothing to push him out. Maybe a few more than 5 dingers, but the rest seems right. And Travis's throwing has been hit or miss this spring, which doesn't bode well unless he's truly turned a corner offensively.

Yeah I don;t even think Rivera rises or falls based on anyone else's game; he's the defensive minded catcher, once or twice a week starter, and the very last pinch hitter. If Travis fails it'll be Plawecki with the starts or a trade.
