The Edge of Seventeen: Amed Rosario

Dominican, crazy tall for a shortstop, chinbearded, being hyped to the skies, and promoted well ahead of my age peers, I'm José Reyes fifteen years later. I mean, I certainly don't feature the stolen base like he did, and hopefully I'm not quite as man-child-y as José, but it's the same drama with a new star.

I've got 54 games of AA under my belt, so if I stay anything close to the Reyes program I should taste big league buffet food this season. And I'm actually about a year and a half behind him. So this train is coming.

But, folks are also hoping I show some power before I debut, and the system is a lot more secure in infielders than it was at the point of Reyes' debut way back when. Should that matter? I don't know. Do you know? Because this is my season here.

#Don't be surprised be ready

Might get a sip of Java in September, but he's front and center in 2018. The real deal.

Re: The Edge of Seventeen: Amed Rosario

Shows the reporters who rank the minor league prospects why he should have been ranked #1 by all of them. Proves to be a man among boys in AA and AAA, gets promoted to the Mets in September. His walk up music will be "I'm High On You".
By the end of that month, Mets team executives will be figuring out where to put his statue in 20 years.
Oh, .357/ .400/ .475. in September. (Don't get too excited. He'll have another 19 years to work on his power stroke.)

He needs a year in the minors ideally but historically these things are dictated as much by circumstances as advance planning. I'll put even $$ on a premature promotion due to injuries during which it will become apparent he needs more seasoning. 250/290/390, 150 PA

Re: The Edge of Seventeen: Amed Rosario

Coming out of a four-week slump, Rosario has found a little second wind, hitting in eight straight, and 11 of his last 12. Only two walks over that period, with one stolen base and one caught stealing, so it's still up in the air whether he projects as a table setter. But overcoming a dry spell is part of the process. Heaven knows, there projects to be one or two of those in front of him.

Re: The Edge of Seventeen: Amed Rosario

BP sticks him at #2 in their newly released mid-season Top-50 Rankings, behind only BoSox-turned-ChiSox 2B Yoan Moncada (no 2017 draft picks or guys currently in the majors are eligible)

Their take:

Why He’ll Succeed -- Rosario is a plus shortstop glove with plus-plus speed, and the bat has continued to develop. He’s a potential five-tool shortstop and only slots in behind Moncada because of varying reports on the ultimate power projection.

Why He Might Fail -- The Mets may never call him up? Well, they will call him up eventually, where his unusual hand path—though it’s less unorthodox than it used to be—and aggressive approach may struggle against major league stuff and sequencing. The glove and speed should keep him in the lineup regardless though.

I think that's the first time I've heard his speed referred to as 'Plus-Plus' (basically scout speak for 'well above average')
Boy that would be nice to have on this team.

Re: The Edge of Seventeen: Amed Rosario

The rainout theater last night included a 2015 hi-lite show that reminded me of the Confoto situation then, and how much it resembles the clamor for Rosario now. The Mets were almost impossibly patient before calling him up, struggling just as badly (if not as buried) as this year.

He made his debut on July 24.

WRITE IT DOWN.

Re: The Edge of Seventeen: Amed Rosario

The 51s just put up a five-spot in the first. Rosario is now batting second instead of the third spot he'd been hitting in most of the season. If I was the type to look for signs, I'd see this somehow being linked to preparing him for a callup.
