Re: 25 Live Rock Albums --- GO!

Hard to argue with a lot of that list!

Rush's last CD of the R-40 tour is amazing. The band had three setlists, all working backward in time. The CD has a third disc with all the swapped out songs, so you get everything. It's darn near perfect!

There was a complete version of the "Song Remains the Same" that came out a few years ago with six songs songs that were not in the movie, including "Over the Hills."

I like McCartney's "Tripping the Light Fantastic" a lot, and Aerosmith's "Live Bootleg" got a lot played a lot when I was in high school.

Re: 25 Live Rock Albums --- GO!

That Zeppelin Song Remains the Same live album is a huge disappointment -- every LZ band member and most every diehard fan would agree. A real lackluster show, by Zep standards, with Jimmy Page having a really off night. A killer live show is their Royal Albert Hall 1970 concert, available on the 2003 DVD release.

Ask most any rock and roll fan from my generation what live act they'd like to see if they were given a time machine and one single wish -- and most would say Jimi Hendrix. Not me. There's enough live Jimi material out there, plus his sound has been studied and imitated to the point that I think I have a reasonable idea what he'd sound like. The rock act I'd like to see live is Janis Joplin, because just about every credible person that ever heard her live in concert says that there isn't a single recording of her that does justice to the raw power and emotion that is her voice.

So put me down for Cheap Thrills, Big Brother & The Holding Co. featuring Janis Joplin, the next best thing.
Also, Get Yer Ya's Out, maybe the greatest live album ever. The Rolling Stones at their absolute concert peak, with Mick Jagger's voice in its prime -- sweet with just enough danger in it and Mick Taylor pushing the Stones' twin lead guitars to dizzying heights. The Stones during the record breaking tour of 1969 in NY, where a ticket getting frenzy ensued that would not be matched at MSG until Ali-Frazier '71.

Re: 25 Live Rock Albums --- GO!

The ones that I've been heavy into, of late, are "Rock of Ages" by the Band, and "Is There Anybody Out There," the 1980-81 tour of the complete playing of The Wall album by Pink Floyd at the very end of their days as a foursome.

I'm going to make a full list of 25 though because I listen to a LOT of live classic rock recordings.

Sentimental favorite; the midnight movie, Dzd & Cfsd took up a whole album
side (you could have sex twice with same song on without messing with the
turntable), Madison Square Garden... this is tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow...

Summertime and Piece Of My Heart are studio tracks as is, I believe, Oh, Sweet Mary (not a good song anyway). I do love the record, however, and would easily vote it as my favorite record of Janis' even though Big Brother weren't the most competent of bands.

There's LIVE and then there's "LIVE," but if Kiss Alive counts, then Beach Boys Party counts.

Re: 25 Live Rock Albums --- GO!

I remember when the phenomenal success of FRAMPTON COMES ALIVE had record companies near and far scrambling to put out concert material of every act they had under contract. Sports leagues and TV sitcoms have nuthin' on the music business when it comes to copy-catting trends.
I also recall the audio quality of some of those efforts to be ... well, questionable is a nice way of putting it.

Re: 25 Live Rock Albums --- GO!

I pride myself on my ability to recognize each song on FCA only by the crowd noise that precedes it.

I would not have guessed someone would include the New Cars on an all-time live album list.

Here's one I used to listen to alot (now evidently digitally remastered!):

Re: 25 Live Rock Albums --- GO!

That New Cars live album -- the band's only album, I think -- is really good to run to! Lacking any real live Cars material, this is best we can do. I did change the order of the songs a bit. It's got a harder, more guitar-based sound than the Cars would have had in their prime. But the version of "Let's Go" is worth the price of admission alone.

Re: 25 Live Rock Albums --- GO!

I don't think there's any better exercise material than the first two Carz albums.

True fact and not an alternative fact: "Just What I Needed" shamelessly licked its intro almost without variation from "Yummy Yummy Yummy."

Re: 25 Live Rock Albums --- GO!

I can't name em all but here's a few off the top of my list.

Frampton Comes Alive - Peter Frampton: I played this album until it melted on my turntable.

Live at Luther College- Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds: Influenced my guitar playing more than any album ever.

Staturn Night:- Cat Stevens : Recorded & released in Japan

Waiting For Columbus- Little Feat : This was my girlfriends album and when she first played it for me I became an instant Feats fan.

MTV Unplugged in New York- Nirvana : I loved almost every artist MTv put on unplugged.

Back To The Bars- Todd Rundgren : Todd's voice at it's best, and having seen him over 30 times I can attest that that is a rare thing.

Stand In The Fire- Warren Zevon: The opening number, LAWYER, GUNS, & MONEY is worth the price of admission alone.

Stop Making Sense- Talking Heads: Loved this even before I saw THE SUIT in action.

Running on Empty- Jackson Brown: I forgot this was a live album.

Chicago at Carnegie Hall-Chicago- This took up two 8-track tapes. Remember those monstrosities?

First Live Album-They Might Be Giants- I've seen TMBG live around 4 or 5 times, but only once when it was just the two of them. That was a trip (saw them in a bar in Philly mid 80'a). One on guitar, the other on accordion. This is full band from 2013. I ran into this a few weeks ago on Twitter, directly from TMBG. They were giving this away for free to fans. 19 live tracks, all songs are favorites for me. Check it out if you want.

All of Dave Matthews Band Live albums which I have been collecting since his first bootlegs. I downloaded a torrent that had all his live stuff up to that point, boots and all. Over 30 concerts easy. So big I can't keep it on the drive. I've only listened to about half of them so I'm glad this thread will remind me to go hunt those up and check out a few more.

Tell me more about this one. Lexicon Of Love was another one of those albums I would more than likely not have purchased, even though I did like the songs that were getting airplay (or MTV play), Poison Arrow and Look Of Love. This is another my girlfriend picked up and again, loved it from first listening. And all the other songs, to me, were better than the songs released as singles. All Of My Heart & 4 Ever 2 Gether are two gems, although they all shine.

I guess it's ironic that the Fake Cars would make a live album because the real Cars were never anyone's idea of a super live band. Not because of the playing but because Ric was so wooden.

Anyway I was all set to test drive the New Cars live before Easton broke his collarbone and the whole thing died.

Re: 25 Live Rock Albums --- GO!

I keep thinking of live albums that I really like and left off my list!

This is a cool Joe Jackson release with him as part of a piano-base-drums trio. What's neat is that he can take songs that we are used to hearing with a full band, like "You Can't Get What You Want," and still make them sound good in a stripped down arrangement. I guess that shows the strength of the songwriting.

It's not perfect. A guy with Jackson's catalog really doesn't need to mix in an "Eleanor Rigby" cover. But the "In Crowd/Down to London" medley is fantastic!

I like 1980s music, and ABC is one of my faves. A lot of that era doesn't translate well to the stage. But this is really good. ABC was never really much of a band, but more of a duo -- and mostly Martin Fry.

There is a reissue of "Lexicon of Love" that has a second disc of a concert from that era, pretty much the entire first album. It's OK. Martin is in full new romantics mode and sounds a little stuffy and forced.

This came out in 1999, and it's basically Martin Fry with a backing band. The classics are there -- stuff from "Lexicon" plus the other ABC hits you know, like "Be Near Me" and "When Smokey Sings." There are some new songs, and they are surprisingly strong. Certainly a more mature performance than the 1982 concert, more relaxed and comfortable. No pretension. He's got good material and knows it. This is a good CD.

ABC -- probably the same backing band -- was the headliner at an '80s show I went to with Wang Chung, Cutting Crew and Tommy Tutone. It was really good.

Re: 25 Live Rock Albums --- GO!

Yeah, ABC is definitely an example of a band whose records were more programmed than performed, and therefore you wouldn't think they're a great candidate for a knock-you-out-of-your socks live act.

But I've been surprised before. Devo and Ministry are two bands that come to mind.
