IGT, 4/5/2017, ATL@NYM, Colón @ deGrom

Expect the first of two unusually hardy cheers for the visiting pitcher in this series as the Mets defend their first-place position.

Pinch-running specialist Travis d'Arnaud is expected to crack the lineup for the first time, possibly Wilmer Flores and Michael Conforto also.

Early season off days suck. I get it, weather doesn't always cooperate. I'm just saying, more Mets baseball please!

We always commented on Colon's weight. Here's a way for him to lose some pounds.
Hit a lot of balls in the gap, and he'll have to run to back up third base.

Re: IGT, 4/5/2017, ATL@NYM, Colón @ deGrom

I am a bit surprised that Colon and Dickey are starters 2 and 3. I wonder if I would have tried Garcia, who pitched pretty well last season.

Not sure what happened to Matt Wisler. He was only just ok last season, but shut down the Mets IIRC. Just looked at the Braves schedule and he doesn't seem to even be in the rotation.

Really pumped to see deGrom tonight. I hear he is back to full strength. If so, the NL should be afraid.

Bart pitched clearly better, though, particularly if you're generous enough to throw out that start on José Fernandez Tribute Day.

MLB.com now has it listed as Garcia starting on Thursday with Dickey pushed to their Friday game at Pitt; not sure if that's correct or not.
Garcia is good when he's good but he might be even more erratic than the fat man and the knuckleballer combined so I'm not sure the order means much of anything.
Mike Foltenewicz is listed as their 5th starter for now although theirs could be a very different rotation by the end of the season.

Yes, I distinctly recall Gary on the telly saying " the Mets will miss Dickey in this series" , he was talking about the crowd reactions to Bart and Dickey

This will be the sixth time Bartolo has pitched against the Mets. He last did so on July 2, 2011 as a Yankee. Before that, there were three games as an Expo in 2002 and one as an Angel in 2005. He's 4-1 against the Mets in five starts. 2.81 ERA.

During his time as a Met, his Schaefer accolades resulted in the creation of five UMDB retrocards:

Looking up the first of those Expos games in 2002, (less big) Bart pitched a complete game for a 2-1 win that day for Montreal despite the NYM lineup getting 13 hits off him.
Even that fairly recent year (in this century anyway) seems quaint as the odds of a team getting just one run off 13 hits and the starter staying in the entire game while doing so are remote.
Bart threw 133 pitches; the Mets tied it at 1-1 in the 8th and had the bases loaded and one out and still he was allowed to stay in and get out of the jam (Jay Payton hit into a force at home then Ordonez K'd.
Mike Piazza and Timo Perez both had 3 hits that day, maybe Terry give them the start tonight.

Five days later the Mets, behind Jeff D'Amico, got to Colon for 4 runs on just 5 hits ... go figure.

That triple is more on Walker than Bruce AFAIC. That was just an awful relay throw where even a decent one would have made it a close play.

Cold night at the old (nine-year-old, at any rate) ballpark. Weirdly long lines to get in, yet not that huge a crowd. Weirdly long lines at concessions. Joint not operating on all cylinders yet...or is in midseason form.

They replaced the awful, awful, awful car race with a more fun version, three go-carts being pedaled around the track. Made me think of the little Jets plane that used to grace the sidelines at Shea offseason.

Two cool new artifacts in the museum: Yogi's jacket from the 1973 postseason, with the rarely seen 75th anniversary patch celebrating the 1898 smashing together of the boroughs; the pillbox cap Tom Seaver wore in 1976. But the joy from seeing them was diminished by a) a lineup card from a game vs the Nats at Citi Field in July 2016 that, according to the accompanying text, was the lineup card from the game when the Mets hit 8 HRs at Citizens Bank Park in August 2015; and b) a Mets 41 jersey allegedly worn by Tom when he pitched during one of his twelve seasons as a Met. Except it has a drop shadow and, at best, was worn by Seaver when he threw out a first pitch. It's the kind of thing that if you saw at a Champions in a Marriott, you'd say, fine, whatever. But it's the frigging Mets museum.

Montero sucks. The intentional walk bit was confusing at first, weird altogether. Throw the bleeping balls.

This was a good game and a tough loss. Shame on Robles (Atl. shoulda scored 2 there).
How long can you expect a bullpen to hold 'em? Disappointing. Two hits vs. Colon (*tips cap) and three the rest of the way?!! Come-OOOON Mets. Hit the fuckin ball. Extra inning though. I love it.

Game deleted from my cranium save for the Bruce homer, which was very nice to see and I'd love to see 33, 34 more of those.

Colon & deGroms line were mirrored except for the run. And Colon gave up the run! Gah!

I watched at two boots pizza but caught the end on a long walk home. Seems to me the goat of the night ought to be dArnaud for going down on 3 pitches the way he did. Not a great turn for Kelly either. Oh, and Reyes looks awful.

Montero has to get the Kurt Suzukis out because eventually the Kemps and Freemans will get a turn to drive them in.

Yup, yup, and yup.

Also, two days ago, when the Brave bullpen was self-immolating, Flores ended the inning swinging 3-0. Crazy. When you've got a bullpen burning in game one of a series, make 'em throw a billion pitches. There might be a war of attrition in game two or three.

Yeah, an awful lot of bullpen shaming going on for a team that amassed all of 5 hits over 12 innings ... 60% of them by Jay Bruce
Fact is we were dancing around trouble much of the night -- Braves were 1 for 10 w/RiSP prior to the Kemp hit -- and didn't come close to deserving to win that game.
NYM bats only had 2 ABs w/RiSP and none in regulation -- only the aforementioned back-to-back d'Arnaud and Kelly K's following Bruce's 10th inning 2B (and the IW to Duda).
