The Edge of Seventeen: Fernando Salas

Hi, I ain't been around. I spend all of the offseason unemployed, and then just as the Mets give me a new contract, I got drafted by México to pitch in the WBC. How could I say no? Days pitching for my county's glory ... nights partying with Ollie Peréz ... .

The only problem is work. I only got two innings of action in the tournament, and I don't think I pitched for the Mets today. (Checking ... I'm wrong! I threw 2/3 of an inning!) I need to get my innings in if I'm going to be a useful part of this bullpen. I'm scheduled to be the third or fourth righthander, but that becomes second or third if Mr. Bigstuff gets suspended. And then, well, I'm looking like I'm going to be a big part of things.

How big? How effectively? Surely one of you know. ¡Viva El México!

Will have the most interesting chin thing going somewhere in 2017,
but I don't think that will be in Flushing...

Can't anticipate that he's going to be as sure a thing as he was last year. I mean he was given a similar responsibility for the Angels last season and wound up in the free pile. That said judicious use and a good offense makes for good relievers so I'm cautiously optimistic that he won't suck his way off the club. 5-5, 4.01 in 61 appearances, 65 innings, 50 whiffs, 22 bases on balls.
