Binghamton Rumble Ponies in 2017

Edgy MD
Apr 07 2017 01:51 PM

The Ponies opened their season and debuted their new brand yesterday by ... raining out.

Their nominal opening day starter was to be Belfast-born comer P.J. Conlon, owner of the top ERA in affiliated ball in 2016. Like the 51s above them, they are responding to the dearth of outfield talent in the system (and outfield health, as Kevin Kaczmarski joins Juan Lagares and Brandon Nimmo on the DL; and outfield willingness, Kyle Johnson has apparently walked away from the game) by carrying only three outfielders.

Instead they've arranged a roster with a jaw-dropping nine relievers, including Scarlyn Reyes, who was stalling at Columbia as a starter and so tries to reinvent himself, and Cory Burns, who last pitched in the bigs in 2013 and spent last season in indy ball.

A lot of vets stalling out at this level. Tyler Pill will be beginning his fifth season in the Valley of Opportunity. L.J. Mazzilli needs to shake off the upstate dust also. Conlon and FSL batting champ Tomás Nido at catcher are the Ponies to watch this year.

Jannis oughta be happy. Getting invited back after walking 76 and striking out only 82 in 140.2 innings, when you're already something like the oldest guy on the team—I'd be thrilled.

Re: Binghamton Rumble Ponies in 2017

That's going to be the story with a lot of these teams: Infielders in the outfield. When you're using the outfield slots to carry extra pitchers, your reserve outfielder becomes the veteran secondbaseman who is being passed by younger players.

Re: Binghamton Rumble Ponies in 2017

A 10-run inning today keyed a 12-4 victory, the eight in the last 10 for the team, pulling them within one game of first place in the Eastern League Northern Division. A lot of hitters are heating up at the same time, as the game featured two homers from Dale Burdick (his first two since being called up from St. Loo), as well as shots by Jio Mier and Kevin Kaczmarski.

First baseman Cody Decker is leading the team as a three-true outcome marvel, hitting only .231, but with a .380 OBP and .538 slugging percentage. Kaczmarski and Kevin Taylor's offense is a welcome relief, because the Mets are grinding to find productive outfielders at many full-season levels.

The staff is led by P.J. Conlon (3-1, 3.31) and Corey Oswalt (3-2, 2.54). Alberto Baldonado has four saves and maintains his spotless ERA through 13.2 innings. It's not likely, but neither is it out of the question to suggest that we might see Baldo soon.

Re: Binghamton Rumble Ponies in 2017

Baseball Prospectus has this to say today about Luis Guillorme (you might remember him as the Bat Catcher):
Luis Guillorme, SS, New York Mets (Double-A Binghamton)
When watching Guillorme play, it does not take long at all to see that he is a special defensive player. He possesses strong, fast hands (Exhibit A) with a plus arm, quick release, and excellent range. His defense alone should allow him to make a big-league roster.

The difference between a bench and regular role will be his offensive development, and Guillorme is enjoying a breakout season at the plate thus far. Through his first 101 plate appearances, he is slashing .326/.400/.382. He has never hit for power, and at 5-foot-9 and 190 pounds, don’t expect that to suddenly change. Nor will he impact the game on the basepaths. However, he has displayed a potential average hit tool in Double-A with decent plate discipline. Yes, an unsustainable BABIP of .397 suggests some regression going forward. Nonetheless, due to his strong hands, impressive hand-eye coordination, and good bat control, he consistently makes contact to all parts of the field.

Amed Rosario is certainly a much more exciting prospect. He has a more athletic frame, runs well, and is noticeably better at the driving the ball. While Rosario will likely become the Mets' starting shortstop in the near future, Guillorme's stock is on the rise and should reach the majors at some point in 2018. —Erich Rothmann

Re: Binghamton Rumble Ponies in 2017

On a two-game winning streak, the Binghamton Rumble Ponies are now ensconced in second place in the Eastern League Eastern Division, within a game and a half of the Trenton Thunder. They have an esteemed guest this week in rehabbing shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera. Rehabbing big-leaguers usually start their return to game action in St. Lucie, where the team's complex is and where they do their rehab work, and the move up to Las Vegas to see the top competition before returning to he Mets. Bingo generally gets bypassed. Combined with the team's historical reluctance to allow top pitching prospects to start their season in Bingo's northern weather, the team can be a treated as an neglected child in the Mets system, so second place is nice, dumb nickname or not.

Pitching has been the name of the game for the Ponies, being the one place in the system that the injury bug hasn't bitten the starting rotation. That is, until knuckleballer Mickey Jannis went down this week, just as he was finally putting together the start-to-start consistency that has been eluding him in his Met career. P.J. Conlon has rebounded from two bad starts to give up only one run over 15 innings in his last two outings. The real unexpected star so far has been Corey Oswalt, logging a 2.18 ERA through his first seven starts.

Outfielder Kevin Taylor has notched his production up (.301 / .409 / .434 // .842) just enough to be noticed. He's always been a good on-base guy, but now his hitting is looking more well-rounded. In a system hungry for outfielders, that's a bonus.

L.J. Mazzilli is the other offensive leader, but he's been bouncing between AA and AAA and certainly hopes to stick in Vegas by mid-season. Defensive specialist Luis Guillorme has surprised with a .296 batting average and .353 OBP. He's still punchless, but that's encouraging. Also just starting to hit consistently is Tomás Nido. Need more walks, Tomás.

Recent in-season signees Cory Burns and Gustavo Nuñez have had bumpy starts. Perhaps they need to do some catching up.

Bingo plays at Richmond this evening, with Conlon on the bump, and they are just getting underway. Druby is at shortstop and batting second.

Conlon threw a 3 hit shutout (7 inning variety) lowering his ERA to 3.02.

That was the front end of a yewj double-header sweep. A seven-inning, complete-game, 3-hit, 1-0 shutout by Nimmo in the first, and a rain-shortened, six-inning, complete game, 2-hit, 5-0 (or 4-0, if you disallow the run in the top of the inning in which the bottom of the inning wasn't played) shoutout by Donovan hand in Game Two.

Nimmo pitches?
The way Granderson has been playing, I guess we all have Nimmo on our minds. :)

I guess so. My mind thought Conlon and my fingers typed Nimmo.

ANOTHER 1-0 shoutout tonight, this one of the nine-inning variety. Blake Bevan went 7 1/3, giving up just two hits and a walk, and Corey Taylor took the last 1 2/3, yielding just one more hit.

Not a sustainable model, but an exciting one.

Re: Binghamton Rumble Ponies in 2017

The rash of injuries that has struck the New York Mets in recent days has been felt all down the line, as teams find their better players getting promoted, and in some cases find forced to take the field shorthanded. Binghamton went to battle against Reading last night with only 23 players in uniform, but managed a 4-3 win thanks in large part to a ninth-inning walkoff hit by Kevin Kaczmarski. (Phightin' Phils, my butt.)

Former (and hopefully future) top pitching prospect Marcos Molina has joined the Ponies after putting up a 1.26 ERA in his first five starts with St. Lucie following a late beginning to his season. He conspires with P.J. Conlon and Chris Flexen to give Binghamton a prospect-heavy rotation, rounded out by veteran mainstays Casey Delgado and Mickey Jannis. A win today with Molina on the mound would allow the Ponies to catch Redding in the standings and pull into a tie for second place. They currently sit in third, six games behind the Trenton Thunder.

Bingo's general lack of power is going to be distinctly amplified, with the promotion of firstbaseman Cody Decker. Decker had led the team with seven homers in only 113 at-bats. After him, the leading thumber on the team is Tomás Nido, slugging .436 with five homers in 172 at-bats—not quite numbers that scream "CLEANUP HITTER!" Joining the team just as we go to press as one of Nido's backups is Tyler Moore, who hadn't yet appeared in 2017, and I was worried had packed it in after a sap of a season in Columbia last year. Welcome back, Tyler. You're going to make it after all. Yadda-yadda-yadda.

One thing Bingo does have going for it is on-basiness, with outfielder Kevin Taylor leading the circuit at .413, and Kaczmarski currenlty fifth at .395.

One person that has to be unhappy is L.J. Mazzilli. injuries to two Mets infielders have led two of his teammates to get the call to Vegas, but L.J. had been the tweener all season long, and he was perhaps taking it for granted that one of those calls was his to get.

Take nothing for granted, L.J.

BA, in their write-up for #6 on this week's 'Hot Sheet':
Since [Chris] Flexen was promoted to Double-A, all he’s done is allow one run or less in four of his first six starts while posting a 43-to-4 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Re: Binghamton Rumble Ponies in 2017

In a system full of teams limping home, the Binghamton Rumble Ponies have been a success in their debut season under a new brand. In fact, you might have called a .600 winning percentage (75-50) a raving success. You might, except for those damn Yankees. The Yankees' Trenton Thunder affiliate sits a comfortable 8.5 games ahead with 15 games to go, none of them head-to-head. You might call it an uttterly lost cause, but the Phillies and Mets know better.

The second-place Ponies indeed have an even tougher row to hoe, thought, despite winning 7 of their last 10. They have no remaining days off and rainouts have saddled them with five games in their next three days. Here to help is guy named Matt Harvey.

The Po's are the opposite of the Mets offensively, not particularly gifted in the power department (dead last BY A LOT) in the Eastern League in homers, but putting up healthy OBPs, led rightfielder Kevin Kaczmarski (.377), leftfielder, Kevin Taylor (.374), and defensive wizard shortstop Luis Guillorme (.373)

It's sobering to look at those homerun numbers:

Homers by Team in the 2017 Eastern League
[list=1][*]Reading: 141[/*:m]
[*]Erie: 136[/*:m]
[*]Akron: 133[/*:m]
[*]Bowie: 129[/*:m]

[*]Hartford: 108[/*:m]
[*]Harrisburg: 104[/*:m]

[*]Altoona: 93[/*:m]
[*]Richmond: 85[/*:m]
[*]New Hampshire: 84[/*:m]
[*]Binghamton: 59[/*:m][/list:o]

So really, that's their game? Just getting on base? Has their pitching been good?

Yeah, I'm mean, sure. They haven't torn the league apart, but they've been mostly stable. While the injuries have torn the Mets staff apart and sucked talent up from the minors, and the pitching staffs below in St. Lucie and Columbia have absorbed hit after hit too, the Rumble Ponies have endured a quiet stability, giving up only Chris Flexen to the bigs. Yeah, that was a big loss after his dynamo first seven starts, but Marcos Molina has joined the team and given them eight starts to the tune of a 3.77 ERA, and that looks pretty good joining a season-long starting rotation of Corey Oswalt (22 starts, 2.41 ERA), P.J. Conlon (21, 3.54), Mickey Jannis (19, 3.81), and Casey Delgado (18, 4.71).

That's good, you think, but you're not being knocked out. None of these guys really have the prospect tag except for Conlon, and maybe (now, anyhow) Oswalt.

Well, the pen has been RILLY good, led by Tim Peterson (1.23 ERA in 51.1 innings. But the real story takes you back to the magic hands of Guillorme. His superlative defensive performance has actually been typical of the team. Check out these error totals next to their Eastern League counterparts.

That's a statistical variance pretty damn comparable to their paltry homerun numbers. That's a statistical variance that gets measured in standard deviations. What I mean to say is ... that's some pretty damn good fielding. They are also second in catching runners stealing and have 29 outfield assists.

It's old time baseball folks. They may not bash the ball out of the park but they get it done with good clean play. And it's all the more intriguing when you think their batting coach is former minor league and NLPB homerun champ Val Pascucci.

Congratulations on a great season winding down to Luis Rojas and his team. And here's hoping while Matt Harvey is down there, he takes the time to get his photo taken with Lee Mazzilli, Jr. and Corey Oswalt.

Bingo takes the first of tonight's games 2-1 on a walkoff hit by Kaczmarski in the 10th.

Down 3-2 in the second game as Casey Delgado exited after just two shutout innings. So much for bragging on the healthy rotatoin.

L.J. Mazzilli, by the way, is playing mostly outfield these days. He was the first infielder up earlier in the season when Las Vegas needed a callup but he never stuck and has since been passed over a handful of times. He may be maxing out.

Re: Binghamton Rumble Ponies in 2017

A two-run first-inning double by Pete Alonso put the Rumble Ponies ahead to stay, never looking back as they rode seven innings of one-run pitching by starter Corey Oswalt, taking a one game to none lead over the Trenton Thunder in the first round of the Eastern League playoffs, winning 4-1. Oswalt, Tim Peterson, and Tyler Bashlor limited the Thunder to six hits and two walks, striking out 12, including shortstop Thairo Estrada three times. Eat it, Ponch!

Speaking of eating it, Ricky Knapp, who spent most of the year getting battered in Las Vegas, plays the ringer as he goes to the mound for Bingo tonight. Go, Ponies!

Re: Binghamton Rumble Ponies in 2017

You get gen-u-ine prospect Marcos Molina taking the ball. Marcos has been hit-and-miss this year but he's gotten better as the season has progressed, which makes sense after missing virtually all of last season following surgery.

MF got to see a no-hitter. Unfortunately, it was against Binghamton, and shared by two pitchers.
Molina pitched well and only gave up one run.

Re: Binghamton Rumble Ponies in 2017

Molina had a rough first inning and got away with only giving up one run, but then settled down nicely.

The weird thing about the no-hitter is that, for most of the game, it wasn't a no-hitter. Early in the game (the second or third inning) Binghamton actually did have a hit, although admittedly on a play that could have gone either way. It was only in the 7th inning, when it was apparent that Binghamton did not have any other hits, that the official scorer took the hit off the board and gave Trenton two errors instead of one. It would be one thing if the official scorer changed the scoring an inning later, but it was really odd to see the decision changed several innings later.

Re: Binghamton Rumble Ponies in 2017

That's a shame, and leaves the team in a 2-1 hole in a best-of-five series.

No announced starter for tomorrow. Hopefully, it's Mickey Jannis.
