St. Lucie Seventeen

Edgy MD
Apr 10 2017 12:24 PM

The story of St. Lucie in 2017 seems to be injured starting pitching so far. Former Mets assistant batting coach Luis Natera joins brand new manager Chad Kreuter and turn-of-the-century fringy pitcher Marc Valdes in guiding a team with almost a full rotation worth of pitchers on the DL.

They've started out 2-2 however, and lefthanded hitting offensive catching prospect Patrick Mazeika has continued his raking ways, smashing to the tune of .333 / .500 / .667 // 1.167 so far.

Firstbaseman Peter Alonso and shortstop Colby Woodmansee have jumped the Sally League and come to St. Lucie straight from Brooklyn. Alonso tore it up in Brooklyn last year, so that makes a lot of sense, but Woodmansee was just meh.

St. Lucie is proud to introduce this year mugshots with backgrounds that match the color of our roster tables.

Vinnie Sienna out getting high and missed the assigned photoshoot.

Johnny Magliozzi sounds like a guy who would have been a good relief pitcher for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1951.

Vinny-with-a-y grew up 50 miles away from L.J. Mazzilli, followed L.J. at UCONN, and is now following him up the system into the middle infield bottleneck atop the organization, so he isn't scheduled for his first recreational drug suspension until he reaches Binghamton.

Nimmo goes 0-2 with two walks in his second rehab game for St. Loo, maintaining his .500 OBP.

Re: St. Lucie Seventeen

As bad as the Mets have had it with starting pitching, Lucie has had it worse, with five starters currently DL-ing, and two more that have served time on the list.

Re: St. Lucie Seventeen

Baseball Prospectus has this to say today about catcher Patrick Mazeika:
Patrick Mazeika, C/1B, New York Mets (High-A St. Lucie)
It’s not likely that you’ll find this name on any top prospect list, but what Mazeika is doing to opposing pitchers in the Florida State League is worth taking note of. In a four-game series between Bradenton and St. Lucie, his hit tool stood out more than any others, just as it has all season. With great barrel control and an easy left-handed swing, it is no surprise that he is currently slashing .360/.424/.593 through 24 games; ranking second in BA, fourth in OBP, first in SLG, and second in OPS. An eighth-round pick out of Stetson in 2015, Mazeika has produced at every level he’s been at thus far (and he’s had to) and one can assume much won’t change moving forward with his advanced plate discipline and coverage. Furthermore, he showed strong lower half usage and leverage in his swing to go along with slightly above-average bat speed, projecting to be an average power threat long term.

Mazeika is athletic enough to stick behind the dish and was comfortable picking pitches out of the dirt, but his below-average arm strength and crude blocking ability will likely force him to first base. His high baseball IQ should make the transition relatively smooth, and he has the tools to be solid at the cold corner. As a 23-year-old, Mazeika’s success isn’t going to mean much until he continues to do the same at the upper levels. —Josh Turner

Re: St. Lucie Seventeen

A three-game winning streak has lifted the Lucitas out of the cellar, taking them past the Jupiter Hammerheads in the Florida State League South Division. They continue to retain a larger and better starting rotation on the disabled list than on the active roster, leaving Andrew Church as their nominal ace. Top prospect Justin Dunn has been having trouble finding the plate, and has been getting his head handed to him (6.91 ERA) more often than not.

Things certainly look stronger on the offensive side of the ball as catcher Patrick Mazeika has been a terror (.368 / .430 / .613 // 1.043). While leaving open the question of whether he can stick behind the dish, his offense is believed to be for real.

Also slugging the ball has been dyslexic thirdbaseman Jhoan Urena (.365 / .471 / .504 // .975), but while he was a tasty prospect at one point, this is his third campaign in the Florida State League, and at 22, needs a promotion by mid-season±and continued productivity in the Eastern League—to regain some of his luster.

A middling line of .267 / .336 / .400 // .736 disguises the start of Wuilmer Becerra. Wuillie's bagged three homers, and while that may not be a lot, any hint of his power returning is welcome, considering he did everything but hit homers (ONE in 65 games) for St. Lucie in 2016. Look for him to gain a midseason promotion also.

Also helping St. Lucie's cause has been regular visits from rehabbing Mets like Lucas Duda, Brandon Nimmo, and Wilmer Flores. And if you ever wonder what it's going to take to get Travis d'Arnaud healthy, take a gander at Jeff McNiel. SEVEN games in the last two seasons, guys! SEVEN!

Re: St. Lucie Seventeen

The recent activation of firstbaseman Peter Alonso from the disabled lists marks a milestone of sorts for the St. Lucie Mets. It allows me to cut one row off the list of disabled players, winnowing the number down to 10. Interestingly, when St. Lucie needs an extra dude, they tend to draw him off the Brooklyn roster, and when they have too many players, they demote a guy to "Brooklyn," which at this time of the year, just means he's deactivated, but he stays in St. Lucie, working out with the extended spring training crowd. Either they don't want to disrupt the Fireflies in Columbia too much, or they don't want to move a player if they don't have to. So guys only get promoted or demoted between the team on merit, which I guess is cool.

The Mets have been hot, winning three in a row and seven of 10, though not quite escaping fourth place. Though their rotation is still something of a patchwork job, they've been getting good starting pitching, most notably the eight innings of shutout ball Nabil Crismatt threw against Bradenton the other day. Nabe allowed but four hits and a single walk, while striking out nine. The Barranquilla, Colombia native has a 3.12 ERA through 52 innings, and though he doesn't appear on a lot of prospect lists, has put up good numbers at every level he's seen, and he'll be in Bingo soon enough. The name is of Arabic origin, but he was born on Christmas Day back in 1994. The recently activated Chris Flexen, he of 40-Man Roster fame, has thrown only 7 1/3 innings in his first two starts, taking it slow, but he's given up only two runs so far. Manager Chad Kreuter hopes to get him going.

On the offensive side of the ball, the featured story is Patrick Mazeika, who hit in Kingsport, hit in Columbia, and has done nothing but hit for St. Lucie in 2017, recording at least one knock in 33 of 43 games so far. He's also showing more power than he had previously, as he has put up a glittering line of .323 / .401 / .532 // .933, putting him right in the league MVP conversation, assuming there are people who conversate about that sort of thing. There are mixed reports on his defense, and he's only caught 17 of 61 baserunners, but everybody runs in the Florida State League, and besides, if those numbers bother you, look at his hubba hubba offensive line again, and remind yourself that he does it every year. If he's not regularly appearing as one of the Mets' top five prospects next winter, I'll eat my hat. You know, the edible one.

Joining PM on the offensive leader board has been infielder Jhoan Urena (first name pronounce "Yo-han"). Urena has fallen off the prospect radar in recent years and is spending his third straight season seeing significant time at St. Lucie, but his line has been too good to ignore this season: .328 / .421 / .477 // .898. Look at that OBP. Just look at it. Now picture it at Citi Field.

OK, now wake up.

Between visiting rehabbers from on high and dudes coming of the disabled list, the St. Lucies have a good chance to get some wind in their sales for the first half home stretch. They may lose Mazeika to Binghamton for the second half, but on the other half, they may be bouyed by much-rumored Tim Tebow promotion, so shwing!

Re: St. Lucie Seventeen

Justin Dunn only just recently reinserted into the St. Lucie rotation following a switch to the bullpen after a couple of ugly starts, just put together his best outing of the year, striking out seven and walking none in five shutout innings. Combined with four more scoreless innings from Kevin Canelon (3) and Tyler Bashlor (1), the effort produced a 1-0 shutout victory over the always-dangerous Florida Fire Frogs.

Reliever Bashlor is just off of learning that he's been selected to the Florida State League All-Star team, joining St. Lucie teammates Patrick Mazeika (catcher), Jhoan Urena (third base), and Wuilmer Becerra and Jeff Diehl (outfielders).

Re: St. Lucie Seventeen

Two runs in the ninth left the FSL Southern Division All-Stars on the short end of a 5-2 All Star Game. Competing against the league's best, Jhoan Urena took an 0-4 collar. Patrick Mazeika did better, going 1-3 with a walk out of the DH slot.

Tyler Bashlor held the Northern Aggressors scoreless in his 2/3 of an inning. He allowed two hits, but struck out two. Wuilmer Becerra came up empty in his lone plate appearance, but secondbaseman J.C. Rodriguez came off the bench and was right in the middle of the ninth-inning rally, going 1-2 wit an RBI and a run scored.

Jeff Diehl is still waiting to get off the bench.

Re: St. Lucie Seventeen

The St. Lucie Mets did a nice imitation of the parent club today, falling behind 3-0 to the Charlotte Stone Crabs after one inning, and 5-0 after two.

Oh, well, mustn't grumble, as the Brits say. St. Lucie went to the bullpen early, and then went to work. And go to work they did, pounding out 20 hits in what would ultimately end as a 19-7 victory. Pete "The Whole Package" Alonso led the onslaught with a 4-5 afternoon, hitting three doubles and a homer, for a total of 10 bases and five RBIs.

Tebow is, indeed, bound for Port St Lucie.

“His last two or three weeks trended pretty well and given all the other circumstances, age and so forth, we felt this was the right time to promote him,” general manager Sandy Alderson said.
“I think we’re pleased with [Tebow’s] first half of the season, ... It’s not like he’s tearing up the league, but at the same time all indications are positive in terms of various things that we look at, in terms of chase rates, exit velocity.”

Good for Tebow. And they love him in St. Lucie.

Guess they needed the space in Columbus for the real prospects they just drafted.

Re: St. Lucie Seventeen

It's rare a draftee lands in Columbus. With exceptions at the high end, you can pretty much expect guys with three or four years of college to hit Brooklyn, guys with two years of college or junior college to land in Kingsport, and the high schoolers to report to the Gulf Coast League.

No 2017 draftees have been sent to Columbia so far.

Re: St. Lucie Seventeen

Sure, but it's cascading. (and they move guys around all the time) Take this Jose Miguel Medina guy who went from Columbia, to Brooklyn, to PSL, to Brooklyn, back to Columbia, and back to Brooklyn. (his living situation must suck)

Lost of roster shuffling this time of year.

Re: St. Lucie Seventeen

Anyone wanna guess who homered today for St Lucie? Well, nobody would be posting about it if it was anyone else.

As for the promotion, yeah its more cash grabbing. Tebow doesn't need to play well to get promoted, he needs to avoid being a complete and utter joke. I suspect by the end of the year the Mets' goal will be to have sold jerseys at every level.

Re: St. Lucie Seventeen

He went 1-2 with a walk in Game One as the DH, and then played left in Game Two and stuck it to ceetar, going 2-3 with a second-inning, two-run homer.

Yeah, they got swept, but it's all about the kids.

Re: St. Lucie Seventeen

The thing about Tebow is that obviously his learning curve/timetable has to be sped up seeing as he's about 7-8 years behind the growth chart at this point.
And you don't expect this experiment to last long -- I mean, do we really think he's still going to be at this three years from now? -- so he needs to be challenged and at three steps below the
majors it's still not like his presence is killing someone else's dream. So you throw him into the (slightly) deeper end of the pool and see how things go. The worst he can do is flunk and the
best is that maybe he converts some of that athleticism into some actual results to where the thought that he might contribute at the ML level doesn't seem so crazy.
It almost certainly doesn't happen that way but this is the best way to find out.

Re: St. Lucie Seventeen

I think the thought is more that he plays "well" enough to continue selling jerseys and boosting attendance well into next spring.

That's certainly part of it and although I think the "windfall" that the Mets are making off this is probably being exaggerated. The Wilpons DO own the PSL affiliate but they don't own either Columbia
or Binghamton so the direct dollars into NYM profits is limited, plus much of that money is sent into the general fund so the Mets only see 1/30 of it anyway.
And I don't think either the Mets or Tebow have committed to a second season of this. He may not want to continue beyond this year and even if he does it's questionable whether the Mets
would give him the spot to do it in.

The opposing teams in the (SEC-centric) Sally League and now in the FSL are probably making as much out of this as the Mets are. TT is coming to town ... get your tickets NOW!!!!!

Ceetar
Jun 29 2017 01:18 PM
Re: St. Lucie Seventeen

Sure, but they're newly in Columbia and the Mets providing ticket draw is beneficial to the relationship (and beneficial to Tebow's agent to do a favor) Since their's pretty much always room for a celebrity minor leaguer if they're willing, I wonder if this could catch on. But there probably aren't enough 20-30ish uber-stars with even the baseline athleticism to fake it like timmy is. Like, Drake would get embarrassed out there.

Re: St. Lucie Seventeen

The successful double-header debut of Tim Tebow in St. Lucie was NOT a success for the team, as they were swept by a Palm Beach team who followed up on taking both ends of the double-header by deserting on St. Lucie with an extra-inning win the next. That loss dropped them to 1-6 in the Florida State League second half standings, good for dead last in the league’s South Division. This follows in the heels of a three-way tie for third in the first half. And you know what they say—a three-way tie for third is a three-way tie for fifth.

The brightest spot remains hot shot catching prospect Patrick Mazurka, who not only hits consistently at .294 / .383 / .444 // .827, but has a Gary Carterish knack for avoiding the strikeout, tallying just 34 in 248 at-bats.

Also continuing to sizzle is Johan Urena, battling his way back from injury and putting up a .299 / .397 / .448 // .845. Jhoan has some catching up to do and probably can expect a promotion coming soon.

Nail Crismatt continues to anchor the staff (2.70 ERA in 14 starts and 86 2/3 innings, with 20 walks and 85 strikeouts). But joining Urena in tonight’s episode of WE ALMOST FORGOT ABOUT YOU THEATER is Marcos Molina who missed a big chunk of 2015, all of 2016, and the first seven weeks of this season, but is really finding his stride now, putting up a 1.26 ERA through his first five starts walking five and striking out 23 in 28 2/3 innings.

All-star infielder Michael Paez joins Tebow, Gonzalez (sweet first start), and Humphreys (crap first start) with mis-season promotions.

The Mets had TBD going for them last night. That didn’t seem like anything that would help them get off the schneid … until it was announced late that TBD was going to be Humphreys. Humphreys was going! Surely he’d turn it around!

And turn it around he did. Seven innings! Six hits! One walk! Two strikeouts! Zero runs!

Zero runs! That’s the way to get it done! At least it was until the bullpen took over. A combination of Justin Brantley, Alex Palsha, and Tyler Bahlor collaborated to lay a big, fat egg, and the saintly Mets lost, 11-0. Their start fell to 1-7. They were blessedly rained out today.

St. Lucie, you'll recall, had a desperate situation developing with their starting pitching from early in the year. Most everybody who didn't get hit by the injury bug got caught in the updraft created by the injures to the Mets staff. The good news is that may be abated. with the addition of Merandy Gonzalez and Jordan Humphreys, the improved play of Justin Dunn, the return of Chris Flexen, and the looming returns of Chase Ingram and Mike Gibbons, St. Lucie Manager Chad Kreuter may soon find himself spoiled for choice.

At the bottom of the Eudor Garcia, infielder. At the time of his release, Eudor had gotten into only five games in 2017, but had hit .357 / .400 / .429 // .829. He must have had a big head.

St. Lucie in a marathon tonight. The just went up 4-3 over the Florida Firefrogs in the 15th.

Re: St. Lucie Seventeen

Pretty grandiose for a single-A affiliate-- high-A or not-- to go with the whole-state naming convention, no?

Re: St. Lucie Seventeen

Recently promoted from Columbia to St. Lucie is Dominican righthander Adonis Uceta. Pitching on May 7 for Columbia, Adonis walked three and allowed four earned runs in an inning and 2/3. Since then, bupkis. All summer long, Adonis has set them up and knocked them down, allowing zero earned runs in 24 consecutive appearances, the last three of which have been with St. Lucie.

And those weren't bogus one-batter appearances either. The period in question covers 32 innings, during which he's walked nine and struck out 38.

In 43 innings total this season, he's allowed a .155 batting average, no homers, and put up a 1.18 ERA. Adonis Uceta. Learn that name.

Re: St. Lucie Seventeen

John Mora got caught stealing today in St. Lucie's extra-inning win. John gets the Lenny Randle Award for continuing to run despite a counter-productive efficiency, having now successfully stolen 15 times, against being caught 13 times, good for a 53.6% success rate.

Re: St. Lucie Seventeen

A perfect ninth with two strikeous for the save tonight and Uceta is up to 33 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings. It's his first save in the FSL after he had earn the closer spot in first in Columbia and the again with Lucie.

Re: St. Lucie Seventeen

Full count in his second plate appearance and ... takes a called strike three.

He's the first player ever to appear in the Florida State League after being being inducted in the Florida State League Hall of Fame. He went .270 / .369 / .459 // .828 with a league leading 39 doubles back in 2003, before climbing from AA to AAA to the bigs all in one season in 2004.

Re: St. Lucie Seventeen

Charlotte shortstop Lucius Fox hits a sinking liner to left. With two out and the bags empty, a typical baseball player pulls up and plays that on a hop.

The Mets, though, have an a-typical football player in left, and he went for it ... and regretted it immediately as the ball skipped past him toward the warning track and to the wall.

But the indefatigable Tim Tebow stuck with the play, pursuing the ball with all alacrity, recovering it, and hurling it back in to shortstop J.C. Rodriguez. Rodriguez made the relay to catcher José Garcia who tagged Fox as he tried to complete the full circle.

So, by going for it, Tebow ended up turning a hit into an out. #intangibles

its Tebow, were you ever in doubt when you started reading that what the end result would be?
