What would you pay?

John Cougar Lunchbucket

This could be a thread or maybe not. But I never fail to be sticker shocked when I need a belt.

69.50 seems like too much $$ for a belt for me. How much did your belt cost?

In related news I need a belt.

I paid $19.99 at Target.

What kind of belt are you getting for three times that, and what special things does it do?

Unless is it one of these!

Re: What would you pay?

That seems like a lot. I would say in the neighborhood of $30-$40 for a nice belt. Two years ago I was in Colombia and the only belt I brought broke. Bought one from a street belt vendor for around $10.

Do yourself a favor, then, and don't google "Allen Edmonds" belts....they run as high as $295.

I got a couple from there, on clearance, a few years back-- $40 or so....nothing special. Their shoes, on the other hand, are the best thing since sliced bread.

Re: What would you pay?

I don't know that I'd pay more than twenty bucks for a belt. It's the kind of thing I like to grab at an outlet when I need to reach a minimum $ threshold for a coupon or something like that.

I of course am traveling for work and left my regular belt at home and need to not look like a complete chump in the morning. I posted that message from an airport mall and have to go hunting now.

I'm still annoyed paying $10 for a small bag of salt last week.

Re: What would you pay?

I'm kind of with Ashie. I've paid as much as $80-90 for a belt... but I tend to pay something like $20 at outlets, estate sales, and weirdo men's stores more often than I splurge.

Re: What would you pay?

$15-$20 sounds about right for an every day belt.
Maybe slightly higher for a belt to wear with a suit (special occasions).

Re: What would you pay?

it depends on the belt, and what you want it for.

if you want a belt that's going to turn to shit, and be stiff AF until it does turn to shit, then spend as little as possible.

if you want a belt that helps support your image as a professional and a grownup, then spend 30-60 on the right one, or possibly more if you need to wear it with a nice suit.

i recently faced the same dilemma. i had left my favorite belt at the airport, having had to take it off despite being tsa-prechecked. when i arrived at my destination, i realized my error. i looked up the local shopping areas, and decided to hit up the nearest outlet mall. this was a mistake, as it was cold, and outdoors, and it wasn't open late. i tried a few likely purveyors of belts and struck out. finally i popped into the bass outlet, just before close. on sale, for about $30, were some belts. slim pickin's at best, i picked one up. i wish i had spent more, actually, or maybe found a better store... it's stiff, and i don't partcularly like it. i'm pretty sure it won't age well. but it did the job and is adequate for khakis.

Re: What would you pay?

I never own more than one functioning belt at a time. My current belt was purchased at a Target in Washington State in July of 2014. I remember that because we were on vacation, sitting in the car figuring out where we were going to eat, when I realized that my belt had broken into two pieces. Used our GPS to find the nearest Target where I bought a replacement. I don't remember the price, but I doubt it was more than $20.

I don't ever feel the need to dress sharp. And if I did, nobody would recognize me!

$10-$15, fuck that , most of the times the belt us unseen , obviously something a little dressy I'll get a nicer one...no need to pay over the top for them though

my work attire is generally a nice button down shirt, tucked into khakis/slacks. a shitty belt isn't much of an option.

My motto back in my New York days was, when buying accessories — belts, ties, socks — if there's a roof over your head, you're paying too much.

I refuse to tuck.

also even if I do my stomach seems to do a bit of covering.

Re: What would you pay?

Just to update you, I faked it with an inappropriate black "jeans belt" and just wore a jacket the whole time.

My general point was, belts are one of those things where the price points always shock me. Maybe a strip of leather does cost that much, I'm just never prepared to surrender it.

Re: What would you pay?

i think the true answer is that the answer is somewhat relative.

if you're wearing a $80 shirt, and $70 pants, then your belt should probably have cost you more than, say, $4.99, if it's a visible component of your attire, although not necessarily.

likewise, if you are wearing a $80 shirt and $70 pants, a $500 belt is going to be potentially out of place, although not necessarily.

i would then propose that perhaps your belt should cost approximately 35-65% of the median of the cost of the shirt and pants with which you are wearing it, provided it is potentially visible, and provided your shirt/pants/belt are not needed to meet some functional needs beyond styling and non-nakedness. for example, if you're an astronaut going to space, then your clothes have additional functional needs beyond looking cool and hiding your bits, and these cost targets are thereby irrelevant. (can you tell that i'm an engineer who often finds himself writing specifications?)

a separate discussion may be required if we were to expand this discussion to belt buckles, and also moved it to texas...

Yeah, something along these lines.

For work I always have two belts at any given time that are a bit fancier and worn with suits. One black, one brown. I don't know how much they are since I don't buy them, but I don't imagine they are cheap. None of the crap you wear with a suit ever is. You want to talk about sticker shock? Try scarves.

When I'm not at work I have one belt. It's black. Or at least used to be black. I'm pretty sure I've had it since college or at least my 20's. I have no idea where I bought it. Maybe Structure or one of those other douchy men's stores from the 90's. I don't see it ever breaking, and unless I lose it, I don't really see myself needing another one. I don't tuck except for suits.

Re: What would you pay?

You don't buy your own belts? Does your employer provide them? I'd like to work for that company.

I admit to having gone cheap-o in previous belt purchases. I have that aforementioned black jeans belt which is wide snd was purchased at the Levi's store. I also have a reversible black/brown boring POS I wear for work. I left that one in my closet when I packed for my work trip earlier this month, remembered it in the airport but balked at paying 69.50 in an airport men's store to replace it

Almost all of my grown-up clothes are bought by my wife, my sister-in-law (presents) and my mother in law, who is super stylish and generous. I would say my mother-in-law has bought me 80% of my suits. She definitely bought me at least one of my two belts.

I buy my workout gear and stuff with Mets logos on it.

Re: What would you pay?

JCL's airport store mark-up of 2-300% puts a good belt price around $20-23.50
at a more reasonably-priced store.

I need a few new belts.

Meanwhile, if you're in San Fran, a belt of type brandon will cost you nearly 9 million.
