VHS to DVD (or better) Revisited

I think we've talked about this before but just throwing it out again.
I have about 5 dozen VHS tapes I'd like to finally retire (get rid of)
but want the content. Half of it is baseball related stuff, the rest just
good movies, concerts and some documentary/non-fiction content.

Anyone tackled this project? I know they have machines, and I've
only kinda looked into them. I haven't checked eBay yet.

Not to be a dinosaur, seems to me the best option would be able to
put the tapes on a hard drive but haven't explored that yet.

your best bet then is to use your computer as an output screen/playback if you can. Then there are various video capture software you can use to record while it plays, and bam, digital.

Thank you both! I'm intrigued by the computer slant and will look into
that more. I'm also a duh, it occurred to me this morning I have an old
DVD recorder buried in the basement that I don't use because it doesn't
work with HDTV. I'm sure I can record tape to disc using that. As I type
this I'm sure we've had this conversation, pay no attention to the man
behind the curtain...
