Re: Guardians, V2

I saw this film in a luxury theater-bistro. The cuisine was chef-quality, the service was solicitous, the seats were plush and roomy, the music and video before the preview trailers and feature ... were kind of creepy.

But what killed me was ... with no expense spared for luxury, the sound really stunk. All the warmth of that seventies music that was embodied in the original GotG, and here I was getting a sequel with carefully Disney-curated 70's pop rock masterpieces, and it sounded like it was coming through laptop speakers. Passing strange. It ruined, like, 87% of the film for me.

I guess what I'm saying is, if you're going to see this, make sure your theater has high-quality sound, because whatever warmth their was in the earlier installment was almost all absent for me. I'd still say a large chunk of the spirit of the former GotG was lost, lost in underwriting and forced moments, but I came ready to sacrifice myself nonetheless, but it wouldn't take me. And a little Surround SoundTM might have taken me.

So, what you're saying is, don't get old?

No, I've done some of the old research, and I've found agreement about the CinéBistro sound system. Check beforehand and make sure your theater has the sonic juice to take care of you.

It was a paint-by-the-numbers, safe, comic book movie. Baby Groot is popular? make him dance through most of the movie.

If this was part of a TV series, it would have been a filler episode.

Nowhere near as good as the first one.

I thought it was fun, but nothing special. Which is pretty much what I thought of the first one.

The one thing that hooked us, for a perfectly random reason, was the song Brandy (You're a Fine Girl).

There's a long story behind that. Legend has it that a spinster named Mary Ellis was the inspiration for that song. The final resting place of Mary Ellis, and several members of her family, is on land that was sold to a movie theater.

The other day we were driving MK home from college, and I decided that we should detour through the movie theater to show MK and D-Dad the Car Park Graveyard (as John Oliver once called it), and I tried describing the Looking Glass song to MK, who had no frame of reference for it.

So what do we hear as soon as V2 starts? Brandy (You're a Fine Girl). D-Dad and I cracked up loudly, and MK is now familiar with the song.

The next song, BTW, was Mr. Blue Sky, which is the song on my iPod with which I start every race.

So once the movie had me musically, I was along for the ride. It was harmless fun, but I got my main amusement early on.

Sad that Brandy is dead though :(

She will live on in my heart!

(Cool story, btw)

After six months, moths may be the more appropriate word
