IGT 4/12/17: NYM@PHA -- Wheeler Wednesday

Edgy MD
Apr 12 2017 05:41 AM

It'll be hard to top this evening's game, but the Mets are contractually forced to try. Wins over the last three games have given us a peek at what the rotation can do for a team, and a foolish young reliever has seemingly awoken our team's bats.

Go get-em, boys!

It'll be interesting to see if we'll see first inning Wheeler or subsequent, car crash innings Wheeler tonight.

Given the suddenly-precarious nature of the rotation, this is a big game for Wheels tonight.

Collins and Warthen are saying that Wheeler's struggles last week were because of the cold weather.

I guess we'll see.

That wasn't an all-negative outing. Just him coming back one rotation turn later is a positive, in my book.

First game in two years, I'm prepared to give him a bit of a mulligan anyway.

Now he's just a pitcher in the rotation. go pitch.

Re: IGT 4/12/17: NYM@PHA -- Wheeler Wednesday

Never been high on Wheeler. Throws hard, but seems to have a straight, hittable fastball. Off-speed stuff is lackluster. Nothing is really swing and miss.

Nibbles a lot, I guess because he has a straight, hittable fastball, his off-speed stuff is lackluster, and doesn't have a swing and miss pitch.

That guy who gave up the epic Cabrera walkoff last year threw behind him on Monday.

Mets haven't stopped scoring since.

I think his curve can be formidable. Not that it always is - but it can be his swing and miss pitch.

Conforto led off the game with a single and came around to score on a Yo double.
Ces then tried to steal third (with Bruce up...why?) and was rundown and tagged out.

Hardly a must, but the Mets could do worse than to wear a patch of their own.

Wheels' ERA is down five runs from the start of the game.

What Gary is forgetting is that Koosman became a better hitter as his career went on.
Now better is a relative turn, but while he WAS awful when he first came up, he morphed into less awful later.

Wheeler pitched well, and I was okay with Terry leaving him in there to try to get out of it in the 6th. But Robles, oy. He's a real box o'chocolates, especially working his third day in a row. I was shocked to see him come out for the 7th, although it worked out in the end. It'll be good to get Familia back.

I thought that too. Push all their best guys one inning back, Salas and Reed as a 7th/8th inning pair when we have the lead gives me the warm feels.

Apr 13 2017 01:03 PM
Re: IGT 4/12/17: NYM@PHA -- Wheeler Wednesday

The problem is that, as long as you have this rule that this guy, this guy, and this guy are used to protect leads and ties in this, this, and this inning, success becomes your enemy, as you are challenge to use those guys more and more often.

But Reed should have been brought in with the bases loaded. He gets them out of that, then it's Sewald City to close out the game.
