IGT 4/14/17: NYM@MIA -- Syndergood Friday

Noah takes on Edinson Volquez. Two depleted bullpens. Mets got to Volquez for five runs, four earned, last week, and didn't even use their Volquez killer Curtis Granderson. Look for a day off for a couple of guys. d'Arnaud certainly, but maybe Céspedes too(!).

Cespedes looked absolutely gassed in his final PA last night. It was like the bat was too heavy for him. I think we may have won 5 in a row now, and have Syndy-deGrom-Havey set up here. This could be the 8 game winning streak we waited all last year for.

Didn't slide given multiple opportunities, and gave up on a foul ball or two in the only remaining park in the division that has room in the outfield to pursue a foul ball. I didn't see the play but Josh pinned his getting tagged out on on-deck Walker failing to give him a slide signal (or a stand signal). Not entirely happy with Walker so far, wonder if he gets a blow too.

Keith was all over Walker for that too. Of course someone could be out there waving semaphore flags but it doesn't mean Cespedes is actually going to follow whatever signal he was given. It was a pretty risky send to begin with.

And in this day and age of shrunken benches, I don't know if it's worth it to carry this guy for one or three innings of outfield defense once or twice a week.

The biggest problem last night* was somehow getting only 2 runs out of 5 hits + 4 BBs in less than 5 innings off of a very shaky Volquez. Three baserunners in each the 2nd & 3rd resulted in just one run off a Sac Fly. And then, in between all those baserunners, comes the requisite solo HR. I think a Cabrera day-off was already penciled in for this weekend, just a question of which switch-hitting SS Terry wants to see against the lefty today and against the righty on Sunday. With Reyes on base three times yesterday maybe you go with him today now that he's "hot" for the first time all season. * aside from a 3-2 game going 3-1/2 hours

Yeah, it's offense. If you don't score, it'll always be some bullpenner who gives up the winning run. If you replace him with another guy, either the other guy will give up the winning run, or your offense will continue to fail and the next guy will. Offense. Baserunners. Offense.
