Didn't think i'd ever look at Gsellman as a stopper but here we are.

Kind of a big start for Gsellman. I think his ERA is above 9?

Suddenly we are not deep at all at starting pitcher.

Re: IGT 4/19 Filthy v. Mets Gsellman v. Velasquez.

Starters are doing fine, up to a point. And that point is so early in the game that the bullpen is getting stretched until it breaks. If Gsellman pitches 5 innings and gives up one run but throws 100 pitches, he will have failed.

I worry less about Gsellman and more about the all-or-nothing offense. They should light up Velasquez tonight.

bullpen pitched 4 scoreless yesterday. if the bats hit, 5IP is fine.

Maybe a 2:22 vanilla-wrapped preview will help change our IGT mojo...

Philadelphia at NY Mets
When: 7:10 PM ET, Wednesday, April 19, 2017
Where: Citi Field, New York City, New York
By SportsDirect Inc.

The New York Mets have found themselves on the wrong end of some late-inning heroics during their season-high four-game skid. After getting swept over the weekend on their foe's final at-bat, the Mets look to rebound from a four-run 10th inning in a 6-2 setback when they play the second contest of a three-game series versus the visiting Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday.

Jose Reyes' costly drop of a routine popup allowed the tying run in the eighth inning and the veteran is hitting just .100 entering Wednesday's tilt versus right-hander Vince Velasquez, against whom he is 0-for-5 with three strikeouts. Such is life for the struggling offense of New York, which mustered 2.5 runs per game over the last four while batting .165 with an on-base percentage of .270. That's a far cry from the 23 runs and 10 homers the Mets recorded during a three-game sweep last week at Citizens Bank Park. While New York's bats have cooled considerably, Philadelphia's Cesar Hernandez carries an 11-game hitting streak (19-for-49, seven RBIs and 12 runs scored) into Wednesday's tilt against right-hander Robert Gsellman.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, CSN Philadelphia, SNY (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies RH Vince Velasquez (0-2, 9.00 ERA) vs. Mets RH Robert Gsellman (0-1, 9.28)

Velasquez struck out 17 batters in his first two starts, but that's where the positives end thus far for a pitcher that figures to be a key component of a young and developing rotation. The 24-year-old was tattooed for five runs on as many hits and walked four batters in five innings of a 5-4 setback versus the Mets last Wednesday. Michael Conforto is 4-for-7 (.571) with two homers and three RBIs versus Velasquez while Asdrubal Cabrera is 4-for-9 (.444).

Gsellman was fortunate to walk away with a no-decision on Thursday after allowing a career-high eight runs on five hits while issuing three free passes in 4 2/3 innings at Miami. The 23-year-old fared significantly better in his last two starts versus Philadelphia, scattering three hits and striking out eight in seven innings of a 17-0 rout on Sept. 25 before allowing just one run and fanning seven in six frames of a 5-1 victory five days later. Freddie Galvis is 3-for-8 (.375) with a double against Gsellman, who has limited the rest of the team to a .256 batting average (10-for-39).

WALK-OFFS:
1. Philadelphia CF Odubel Herrera, who homered on Tuesday, has four hits and three runs scored in four contests versus New York this season.
2. Mets RH Jeurys Familia will serve the final contest of his 15-game suspension for domestic abuse on Wednesday.
3. Phillies 3B Maikel Franco is mired in an 0-for-17 stretch since going 5-for-11 with two homers and six RBIs in the previous series versus New York.

Re: IGT 4/19 Filthy v. Mets Gsellman v. Velasquez.

Speaking of Odubel Herrera.

you might have heard this on the Effectively Wild Podcast if you listen..

he's slow.

31.9 seconds between pitches is molasses. (average is 24)

it's like 6 seconds longer than last year where he was warned, warned, fined, negotiated the fine into a warning.

He saw 25 pitches last night. That's about 12 minutes. That's more than 3 minutes more than the average batter.

I am repeating myself but Bartolo Colon might have fit nicely these days and/or if more arms suffer.

Luckily it's usually not hard to find a Bartolo Colon type when you need one.

Rather late to the party tonight. Reading through the thread, but I couldn't let this pass without comment. Not hard to find a Bartolo Colon type? Are you kidding me? The man is a one of a kind original.

Besides that, he was dependable and durable. He is the kind of bullpen arm the Mets need. He can fill in as a spot starter, long man when a starter faulters, or the inning eater in those long extra inning affairs.

Glad to see the Mets (Bruce) pulled this one out.

Re: IGT 4/19 Filthy v. Mets Gsellman v. Velasquez.

On vacation for a few days in Tannersville, PA, hitting the indoor water park/arcade/mini golf type joint. Watched innings 3-6 in the hotel room on the Phillie network, only, our kids don't fall asleep with the TV on, so, I boot myself down to the resort bar and ask the bartenders if they can put on the Phillies games. Only, the channel numbers are different down there, and I can't find Comcast.

But they get SNY down here!

So it was 3-3 at that point, but over a fine Blue Moon stout I got to see Bruce hit the go ahead HR, and grabbed another beer to go, and headed back to my hotel room.

That is all. #LGM

Super!!!. They do have SNY and WPIX NY channel 259. The two NBC's confuse me.

That SNY streaming stuff doesn't work in St Louis, boo.

But Bruce looked good on Gamecast (which is only slightly worse than Comcast). Needed that one, boys.

Meh, Bartolo has a 4.24 ERA this season, his age 44 season. He's only reliable until he's not. He pitched well for the Mets over the three years, giving them some value, pitching right about league average. That's fine, that's good. (That's also what everyone bitched about when we got it from Mike Pelfrey), but you can find that if you suddenly need it. You might even be able to find _Colon_ again should you need him, if it's two months from now and the Braves are looking to promote a starter from the minors anyway. He's just roster filler for them.

It ain't a bullpen arm the Mets need. They need to get their leadoff hitter on.
