IGT, April 26, 2017 -- Game #20

Frayed Knot
Apr 26 2017 01:49 PM

Not a make-up of the wash-out but the regularly scheduled game for this date.

Gsellman gets bumped and so Harvey will start in his regular spot.
Atlanta keeps their rotation and simply slides everyone back a day, so Julio Teheran will go tonight with Dickey on Thursday vs Syndergaard.
We will then wind up missing Colon this time around.

Recalled Sun according to RW, will be used in long relief.

Almost kinda glad they don't face Uncle Bartolo.

The opposition:

Inciarte CF
Phillips 2B
Freeman 1B
Kemp LF
Markakis RF
Garcia 3B
Flowers C
Swanson SS
Teheran P

Pound for pound, perhaps the specifically Mets-killingest lineup in the National League that doesn't include Daniel Murphy.

NEW YORK -- Noah Syndergaard was scheduled to start Wednesday's game between the Mets and the Braves, but it was announced that Robert Gsellman will take the hill instead.

Following Tuesday's rainout, it was announced that the Mets would skip Gsellman's start and have Syndergaard pitch in Wednesday's game. Gsellman was going to be available out of the bullpen.

Having Gsellman start Wednesday means that Syndergaard will face former Met R.A. Dickey for the first time since the two were traded for each other in 2012 on Thursday.

I'm tellin you guys the Braves scare me more than Philly and Miami put together. I mean, I think we hit back, and their bullpen sucks and all but that's not an incapable lineup any night.

Pretty depressing being 5 runs down before ever coming to bat ... particularly since I don't think we've ever scored 5 runs off of Teheran.

And this of course comes on the heels of being 4 runs down to Scherzer before ever coming to bat.
Not exactly a formula for success.

That was the 14th Mets AB with bases loaded this season: Prior to tonight they were 3 for 10 plus 2 walks, for a total of 12 runs

Met pitchers, on the other hand, have already faced bases-loaded situations [u:2i4l6y14]29 times[/u:2i4l6y14] (before today) allowing 3 walks, 9 hits including 3 Grand Slams, and one Sac Fly for 24 runs total.
And now you can tack-on another bases-clearing double to the above.

Re: IGT, April 26, 2017 -- Game #20

This season is rapidly becoming a train wreck. As is too often the problem with the Mets the past few seasons, you can't win games when you struggle to score. The lack of a consistent offense puts added pressure on the pitching staff as there just isn't much room for error. If a starting pitcher gives up 2 or 3 runs he is very likely staring at a potential loss, or possibly a no decision, if he's lucky.

Another constant of recent Mets teams seems to be the plethora of games lost to injuries. I suspect a lot of that is due to the rather old make up of the starting line up. An infusion of young players that can stay healthy and hopefully provide some much needed ability to simply get on base.

2016 offseason- change no offensive players.

2017- team struggles to score runs.

Pretty simple actually.

Re: IGT, April 26, 2017 -- Game #20

When a team is down 8-1 in the bottom of the seventh, and get guys on first and third with no outs, and the next batter swings at the first pitch and hits a sacrifice fly, and he gets congratulations through the dugout, something is fundamentally flawed in their philosophy and approach. And they don't seem to realize it at all.

Re: IGT, April 26, 2017 -- Game #20

I agree, though its customary for the result.

I have to say it again this team tanked without Duda last year too. He's too big a presence to do without. And I'm mad at Gsellman (I think it was Gsellman) for the shitty throw that injured him, and for digging a struggling offense a hole again.

Gsellman! I was on your side and you BETRAYED me!

It bothers me that injury, bad weather and so forth have probably contributed to the rotten stretch we've seen while opponents playing in the very same conditions look that much more capable. I worry that they're not really prepared to answer questions like "How to get Aaron Altherr out?"

Also, while I'm sure things can and will get better, I worry about the stickiness of the notion that a club that loses 9 or 10 is always capable of losing 9 of 10.
