Mets trying to finish this series with one Conforto tied behind their backs, and Reyes back in the leadoff slot.

I wonder if it works, will Confy be in the middle of the lineup come Friday night.

Two balls hit to him today: runner on 1st/1 out, and 1st & 3rd / 1 out
and with a chance to get four outs he got one.

No, but apart form bullpen management, I've also been on Terry to not get so comfortable with Rivera at first, and instead play Wilmer there, and T.J. at second and third.

Terry never reads my posts.

Re: 5/10 IGT Giants v Mets Milone v Cain

I'm not buying this "bullpen mismanagement" angle folks.

Despite all the other problems -- leaving 2 runners on in the 6th, 7th, & 8th, then one more in the 9th, Wilmer turning four outs into one, etc. -- we wound up in the 9th inning with a lead and the closer in the game. That he then proceeded to serve up two walks plus three hits (including a bases clearing double to a 21 y/o rookie) while getting a grand total of ONE out isn't the manager's fault, nor am I buying that this was all caused by the ten pitches he threw last night or the 22 he's thrown since Friday.

Re: 5/10 IGT Giants v Mets Milone v Cain

No loss this cockpunchy has only one cause. Boo, Wilmer. Boo, missed opportunities.

But, boo, Terry, too. I can usually find some convoluted argument to support Terry's moves, but there was no line of thinking - traditional, sabermetric, sentimental, you name it - that justified bringing in Familia last night. He didn't need the work. The Giants are a bad offensive team other than Posey and maybe Panik. Montero could have held the lead yesterday. My niece could have held the lead yesterday, and not only is she fifteen years old, she's a position player.

And, based on Howie's call (I didn't actually see the game, since I'm in the MLB.tv blackout area this week) it sounded like Familia was gassed. I guess there's an argument that closers should be able to pitch effectively three days in a row since they're only asked to throw 15-20 pitches every few games, but that just ain't how things are today. With a rested Familia today, we would have had a much better shot at winning.

Re: 5/10 IGT Giants v Mets Milone v Cain

I too was against using Familia on Tuesday because I thought it had the potential for going wrong on us if he had a lengthy outing.
But he didn't which is why I'm not buying the idea that the reason he couldn't find the plate today [26 pitches - 12 strikes] was on account of him being gassed from the grand total of the 22 competitive
pitches that he's thrown over the previous eight days.

He simply sucked today (as did Wilmer, as did the bats) and I'm afraid we've fallen into the habit of blaming Terry each and every time any one of the relievers has a bad outing.

Re: 5/10 IGT Giants v Mets Milone v Cain

Yeah, I think it was a bad idea, long outing or no. He ended up used on a third straight day, this time on the short rest of a day game after a night game. Apart from pitch count, there are warmup pitches and the interruption in recovery that happens when you are pitching multiple days in a row.

You don't have to be gassed to just not be sharp. It's suboptimal usage.

Centerfield
May 11 2017 02:13 PM
Re: 5/10 IGT Giants v Mets Milone v Cain

There were numbers last year that showed how much Familia's productivity dropped when used 3 straight nights. And yes, the argument is that a closer has to be available three straight days, but if you know this about him, there is no reason to pitch him the night before in a 6-1 game.

I don't know that the result would have been different. But you have to optimize your chances. Our manager did not do that.

It's the same thing about Maddon in Game 6. That the Cubs ultimately won the series doesn't mean that was the right move.

Centerfield

Re: 5/10 IGT Giants v Mets Milone v Cain

But point taken, that yes, there are lots of fingers to point in that game. Not scoring against that Giants bullpen being front and center.

Not saying it's all on Terry, just that he contributed.

Edgy MD
May 11 2017 02:33 PM
Re: 5/10 IGT Giants v Mets Milone v Cain

It's also Terry who has deployed Wilmer at third and T.J. at first, while the opposite alignment is arguably better. It's Terry who went down with Plawecki batting with the tying run on second, while René Rivera was hitting 242 points better on the season (and, to put small sample sizes aside, 12 points over the course of their careers).
