Been a fan since "72

I was a little girl then that thought anything could happen, and deep down I still know this.

But really, Mets? Can you get some damn trainers and coaches and so forth that know what they are doing? Can we allow these 20 some year olds to sit around nursing frigging bruises because (ahem) they are soooooooooooooo valuable? Are there any men out there still playing baseball?

I'll bet we could field a better team from CPF.

1971.

If the CPF fields a team I'll have to be on the Disabled List. I have a torn rotator cuff and my overhand throws are pretty pathetic.

Re: Been a fan since....

Ya know what? I'm a GIRL and since my second pregnancy in 1988 I still can't run but I'm out there doing my best in MY yard and My house and though I could never throw well anyway I could hit and I wouldn't shy away.

Dammit these guys piss me off.

My dad would be in a bind. I'll bet most of your dads would be too.

Apologies to all of you but am I mad? Yes!

This G/D team lost today. And they will tomorrow too! And every day for the next six weeks because fifty some year old me can handle my injuries better and not get some insane person to train me on weight lifting! Wow! I can handle my own health!! WooHoo!

The Pirate aren't on today (well, they have an off day but I Love Lucy would be better) and Root Sports has on a God damn COLLEGE WOMENS LACROSSE game on. (Really? can I go out back and see if any if the seeds I planted yesterday came up?) Oh shit it's dark.

Women's College Lacrosse? I may throw up.

Grrrrrr. What a shitty day.

Re: Been a fan since....

1968, god help me. As a little kid I had no idea of the life of pain ahead of me.

Seasons like this are the worst because there are expectations going in. The years where you knew they weren't competitive from Day 1 can be watched in a different fashion; you can focus on individual achievements (Reyes winning the batting title in '11, for instance, Dickey's Cy Young season in '12 or Harvey blossoming in '13). But when the team is supposed to do well as a unit and fails miserably, that blocks out the joy of everything else.

They could turn it around, but right now the trajectory looks awful.

1966, this season already is one of the most frustrating.

It gets better Cooby.

If rooting for the Mets brought me pain I would stop doing it. Sure, there's been some frustration along the way, but I have no angst about the Mets at all. None. At all.

Re: Been a fan since....

This is my 49th season on the beat. My first was 1969. I've clearly seen better. I've definitely seen worse. There's room to plummet, but also room to rise.

It's lousy, but it's early. Honestly, deepening crappiness of this eleven-game stretch notwithstanding, 2017 has yet to register as epically godawful...though I wouldn't want that to be taken by the gods as a dare.

As for the CPF team, I call flack. "Guys, no more questions for Cooby."

1969

My grandfather had tried to explain the game to me for the previous couple of years, but with all of the excitement of the season 1969 is when it all finally made sense to me.

I'm the dugout mom. Somebody has to get these guys Band Aids and ice packs when they get scraped up on the field.

Exactly. I didn't know any better at first and just followed my Little League teams the first couple of years (Cardinals, Cubs) but couldn't bring myself to like the Twins that following spring. The rest, as they say, is history.

As much as I loved the 1986 team, and the 1999 team, and the 2015 team, to me the "real" Mets are guys with names like Seaver, Koosman, Jones, Agee, Grote, McGraw, Kranepool, Harrelson, and Garrett.

1964 was my first game and when I declared my allegiance. Really 1966 or so was when I started paying attention.

I know what you mean. They're the baseline for our generation. Yet if riding a given train of thought, I can find myself feeling the same way about any edition. For example, I was thinking about the 1994 Mets recently and, for a moment, Fernando Vina became as real as real gets.

Ditto, except it was my father. I remember being 8 years old when he got me all excited about the Mets winning the world series, without my fully understanding what that meant. Little did i know at the time that i'd have to wait [crossout]27[/crossout] [17] years for another one.

1973 and I was a little girl as well, Cooby. I must confess my Dad was a Yuckee fan and up until '73, I watched Yuckee games with him. Then one fateful day I ventured into my brother's room (a diehard Met fan) and the rest is history...

Re: Been a fan since....

For to damn long apparently.

Actually My first memories were of the 1969 playoffs and World Series. Traveling around the world and the continental USA as a child due to my father being in the Air Force for 23 years, I gravitated toward the teams where I was born (Southampton, NY). For most of my life, when asked where I was from I always stated New York, thouh we moved away just after my 4th birthday.

I'm always thankful that as an impressionable youngster, I chose the Mets as my team (over the other option).

I didn't follow my LL teams-- by then, I was well locked-in-- but I DID come to love the '85 Royals. My uncle's family lived at Fort Leavenworth for a couple of years, and their enthusiasm for the Royals and Chiefs was powerful and almost palpable. Plus, once they snuck past the Jays to take on Tudor and the MFCs, they became blood allies. Maybe it was at least 50 percent Cardhate. God, did 7-year-old me hate the Cards.

Re: Been a fan since....

Became a fan in 1965.

I got into baseball at the wrong time: 1961. Since I lived on Long Island, that meant I rooted for the MFYs. And, of course, you had the Mantle/Maris battle that year. I was a Maris fan; my first MLB game was when he hit #61.

In the summer of 1964, I went off to summer camp, so I couldn't follow baseball and lost interest. But in the fall, I idly followed the MFYs in the World Series. When they lost, I decided that if I was going to follow a team that lost world series, I'd follow the Mets, who would never be in one anyway.

(Also my brothers' friends were Mets fans. And about that time, Ed Kranepool and Larry Miller made a PR stop about a half hour from where I lived; the Yankees never did anything like that). So I started learning about new players: Hawk Taylor, Joe Christopher, Kranepool, Jack Fisher, etc. By the end of the season I was hooked.

Re: Been a fan since....

Great story Chuck. Reminded me of what George Thorogood said about becoming a Mets fan around the same time. In Wilmington, he was a Philly fan but in the wake of their 64 collapse said "If I'm going to root for a loser I'll root for the biggest loser of all."
