Asdrubal's thumb

Damaged diving (unsuccessfully) for a ball for those not watching.

X-rays say: Not broken
MRI tomorrow to check for soft tissue (ligament) damage.

I'd be shocked if there's NOT significant damage -- neither Darryl back in '85 nor Ronnie in '87 looked nearly that bad when they fucked up their thumbs.
Darryl did his on May 11 and didn't play again until June 28. Ronnie's was in September which ended his season.
At the very least I think Cabrera's hitch-hiking days are on hold for a while.

So let the speculation begin on the replacement.
- My immediate thought is Flores to 3rd, Reyes to SS with Reynolds and call-up Cecchini to back up, with one of them going back when Duda returns (late next week?)
- That Reyes is hitting now argues against Rosario as this allows Reyes to go back to SS where he supposedly feels more comfortable.
I don't think they're against bringing up Rosario on any kind of principle (Sandy said as much during his in-game chat) but I think if they're going to bring him up it'll be to play more or less full time and at SS

Re: Asdrubal's thumb

I think they are OK with infield depth at the moment, with Reyes as a starter and Reynolds and Rivera and Flores capable of backing up.

But Nimmo may be a possible replacement on the roster, who can take over his spot at the top of the lineup, if not on defense.

Who would Nimmo displace in the outfield? Curtis?

I wouldn't mind Nimmo because [crossout:3eh2ff8x]of that dazzling smile[/crossout:3eh2ff8x] he bats lefty and they need that off the bench.
I think that there was something on Twitter earlier saying that the Mets might want to delay calling up Rosario for a month to retain control for an extra year.

Well I'm just thinking of adding him to the roster, but yeah, it makes 97% of all the sense in the world that most of the PT he would get would be at the expense of Granderson.

Re: Asdrubal's thumb

This thumb thing may yet land Cabrera on the DL.
Was out of the lineup today and almost certainly will be tomorrow.

He says that there was a small tear in a ligament but wants to play through it. Whether to DL him will depend on how it feels in the next day or two sez NYDN

The good news is, think about how close to Las Vegas they'll be over the next three days!
This will be one of the times the location is an advantage if they need someone like Cecchini quickly.

Re: Asdrubal's thumb

And that's why we ended up going down with Reynolds at the plate in the ninth.

What the Mets don't seem to realize is that the brand-spanking-new 10-day DL has taken a yewj chunk of the margin for error out of the to-DL-or-not-to-DL decision. Err on the side of DL-ing a guy, and you'll be serving yourself a lot better.

Exactly. Some teams have quickly learned how to use the new 10-day DL to their competitive advantage. The Mets are not one of those teams.

Re: Asdrubal's thumb

what's the over/under on number of games that the Mets play short-handed? I say 3.

And then Cabrera will come back in two months.

Nothing will beat playing shorthanded for a week before putting David Wright on the DL.

There has to be some sort of formula for number of games played shorthanded measured against time actually spent on the DL. David, I'm sure, would hold that record.

Re: Asdrubal's thumb

Good news, for what it's worth, is that the Mets are in Mountain Time with the 51s at home, so for once, minor league callups this week won't create too many time-and-space issues.

Re: Asdrubal's thumb

I would think that, after Cespedes and arguably Thor as well, that they would just give Cabrera the ten days and not risk him making it worse by trying to play through it.

[mets] Nah. Better to play shorthanded for a week, then retro-DL him, and once he gets it checked, he winds up needing to have the thumb amputated. [/mets]
