Favorite non-Mets: Jim Abbott

One of the cool parts of my job is that I get to meet some pretty incredible people -- like Jim Abbott. He returned to Michigan today to participate in an event aimed at employers with the message that people with disabilities can amazingly talented. He demonstrated on stage his method of catching the ball and transferring his glove to be able to throw, then be ready to catch again. If you've never seen him do this, it's pretty neat to watch. He had one really great season, a bunch in the middle and one awful one. But winning a Gold Medal, the Sullivan Award for the top amateur athlete and pitching a no-hitter is a pretty nice career for anyone, much less a guy with one hand. I got to spend some time with him between interviews, and he was really nice and extremely patient. We spoke about the first time I saw him pitch, during his rookie season. Pet peeve about Jim Abbott... (well, not about Abbott himself, but about how he was covered)... Everyone kept saying that he had "one arm". He actually had two arms, but one of the arms is missing a complete hand.

My favorite Jim Abbott story is how my best friend - an MFY fan, too - was offered tickets to a game at Yankee Stadium but turned them down... and Abbott pitched his no-hitter that day.
