IGT 5/15/17 Mets @ Dbags: Just Deserts

Zack Wheeler vs Zack Godfrey, and a 9:40 PM start, which means, you know, get a nap in today. Gonna be a late one.

Re: IGT 5/15/17 Mets @ Dbags: Just Deserts

At least it's not like games regularly last 3-1/2 hours or more these days ... oh wait, that's exactly what they do.
7 of the 17 games played yesterday (two DH's) ran north of 3-1/2 including two that were 4-plus (one needed 10 innings). By contrast only 5 of the 17 clocked in at under 3 hours.

IOW, we could be in for some late ones over the next two nights.

I'll be happy to get to the 4th or 5th inning today. I am working from home so I will at least be getting a 1-2 PM nap in. That'll help a smidge.

Funny, that's what the Mets' starters usually say

I know what you mean. I'm kinda glad for the late start because it means I'll be less tempted to tune in.

Yesterday's game was the first one I've missed this year and it was by choice. I'm tempted to say I am out until they win, too...but the Mets are kind of like a drug for me. Even though I know it could lead to continued disappointment, I imagine that I'll still tune in.

Wasn't going to watch yesterday either but after gardening I came in to see them with a 7-1 lead. So I sat down and watched in horror.

NY Mets at Arizona
When: 9:40 PM ET, Monday, May 15, 2017
Where: Chase Field, Phoenix, Arizona
By Gracenote

The New York Mets hope to put a disastrous weekend behind them when they visit the vastly improved Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday for the opener of their three-game series. The Mets have allowed a total of 35 runs in four straight defeats and were swept of a three-game set at Milwaukee after coughing up a six-run lead over the final four innings on Sunday en route to a demoralizing 11-9 loss.

New York has scored 22 runs during its losing streak and Neil Walker is having a strong month of May, going 18-for-50 with six doubles, two homers, 10 runs scored and 12 RBIs in 12 contests. Zack Wheeler will try to stop the bleeding for the Mets when he takes the mound against Zack Godley of Arizona, which took five of six in the season series last year. The Diamondbacks (21-18), who finished with 69 wins last season, have lost two straight after leaving the bases loaded in a 6-4, 10-inning setback against Pittsburgh on Sunday. Paul Goldschmidt has homered three times in his last two contests to continue a 23-game stretch during which he has registered eight blasts and 26 RBIs while batting .366.

TV: 9:40 p.m. ET, SNY (New York), FSN Arizona

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Zack Wheeler (2-2, 4.18 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks RH Zack Godley (1-0, 2.25)

Wheeler notched his second victory of the season last time out by limiting San Francisco to one run and two hits over six innings, but he walked four batters for the second straight contest to drive up his pitch count. The 26-year-old Georgia native has allowed just one earned run in three of his last four starts and is holding opponents to a .210 batting average overall. Chris Owings is 2-for-6 versus Wheeler, who is 2-1 with a 2.33 ERA in three career turns against the Diamondbacks.

Godley has been solid in his two starts this season, including a victory over Detroit on Wednesday in which he permitted just one run on four hits and one walk with six strikeouts over seven innings. The 23-year-old Tennessee product, who went 5-4 with a 6.39 ERA last year, held San Diego to two runs on four hits and three walks over five frames in a no-decision on April 26. T.J. Rivera has recorded a double in three at-bats against Godley, who is 1-0 with a 2.16 ERA in two career appearances (one start) versus the Mets.

WALK-OFFS:

1. Arizona C Chris Iannetta was placed on the 7-day concussion disabled list and RHP Silvino Bracho was recalled from Triple-A Reno.
2. New York C Rene Rivera has hit safely in eight straight games, going 14-for-33 with eight RBIs in that span.
3. Diamondbacks CF A.J. Pollock suffered a groin injury in the late stages of Sunday’s game and is day-to-day.

Amazing how Godley is the one who's issued five walks (one of the no-pitch intentional variety) and yet it's Wheeler with the high pitch count despite hurling a shutout so far.

So tonight we're getting good starting pitching for the first time in a while ... but are getting one-hit.
And we're going to need the bullpen to cover at least three innings.

Re: IGT 5/15/17 Mets @ Dbags: Just Deserts

Yup, three full innings needed from the pen, plus they're starting out with a runner on.
And that's all if this doesn't go extras.

A rare sighting of the Curtis Granderson assist. Big Foot or Jimmy Hoffa may be next.
Now we just have to avoid the increasingly less rare sighting, the Hansel Robles first-pitch XBH.

Robles keeps pointing to the sky on those bombs as if to signal a pop up.

I think if he started circling that finger it would be more accurate.

I can't remember a tougher stretch as a Mets fan.

2008 was bad. 2007 was worse!

The good news, such as it is, is that the Mets have plenty of time to turn this around. It doesn't seem at all likely that they'll do that, but there's that old axiom about how you're never as bad as you look while you're losing. I expect that there are better days ahead this season, but I also doubt that the wins to come will be enough to propel them into the post-season.

Cast your vote!

It's a total coincidence that this graphic's turn came up for a game where the Mets lost to the Diamondbacks. Honest!

Right? I know it's reactionary to write off a team in May, but sheesh. 5 games under, 8 games back. Everyone and their mother injured. How do you come back from this?

And the farm system is basically tapped other than Rosario and Smith.

Re: IGT 5/15/17 Mets @ Dbags: Just Deserts

I'm not sure. Somebody comes of the DL. Somebody gets called up and totally changes the complexion of the lineup. A reliever learns a new pitch, bumps himself up in the rankings and everybody else down a notch. The coaching staff gets shaken up.

I don't know that a turnaround is going to happen, or how it'll happen if it does, but they do happen, and I'm sure rooting for one now.

I do know that I feel like we can't afford to wait on Granderson.

Optimistic take is that Smokie finds his shit again in Vegas. I think I saw somewhere he was starting there.

I used 2008 in the comparison because that was the year where the bullpen really struggled, we were short bodies, and Jerry's use of it seemed to spread a disease of unCAHNfidence.

It was the time of Luis Ayala. It was the time of Brandon Knight. Of Toe Knee Arm Ass Junior.
