Re: IGT #43 5/23 who's your Padre?

Mini SDP KTE

These guys are a lot like the Angels ... only worse.
16-30 and with an MLB worst run differential (-85) that suggests they shouldn’t even be that good.
Their lineup is kind of like an Angels clone in that there's Wil Myers (OPS 862) plus a bunch of guys named Joe, or in this case, Yangervis. In short, they’ve got a bunch of decent power/low average guys
in a park not built for power and the rest of the lineup is filled with FA waiver wire pickups and even includes three separate Rule 5 guys, two of which are 21 y/o and never played above A-Ball before.
It might be why they’re only a hair ahead of the Giants for lowest RS/G (3.43) But to make up for it they’re also 14th in the league in RA/G (5.28) ahead of only the Mets

C - Austin Hedges .215 BA, 8 HRs
1B - Myers
2B - Yangervis Solarte: .226, 3 HR
SS - Erick Aybar: .211, 4 HR
3B - Ryan Schimpf: .165, 10 HR
RF - Hunter Renfroe: .218, 8 HR
CF - Manuel Margot: .264, 4 HR (although with the glove he’s a human highlight film waiting to happen)
LF - ??? It had been the grounds of Stonybrook’s Travis Jankowski but he’s on the DL so they’re trying to replace his .160 bat with a host of guys unknown past their immediate families whose
names are apparently Blash, Cordoba, Spangenberg, and Szczur, but I think several of those may have been made up by drunk data entry people at BB-Ref.

Tuesday 7:10 — Jhoulys Chacin [10 starts, 3-5, 4.61, 1.25] vs Harvey
You may remember Chacin from such movies as: 'HELP ME I'M ON THE ROCKIES' and 'THIS IS NOW MY FIFTH TEAM IN THE LAST FOUR SEASONS'

Wednesday 7:10 — Jarred Cosart [3 starts, 0-1, 2.70, 1.50] vs Gsellman
Cosart was drafted by the Phils but has since taken trips through Houston and Miami before landing in Sandy Eggo in 2016
He's started 6 times against the Mets over the years, including twice in 2016, and has put up decent stats [3.12 ERA, 1.10 WHIP] but never had a decision either way

Thursday 7:10 — TBD vs deGrom
This was to have been Jered Weaver’s turn (note that this team's staff has a Jered and a Jarred) but he’s now DL’d (I think he sprained his Jered - or maybe it was his Jarred)

He got off to a rough start this year because he was trying to play through an injury that happened in the first week of the season -- as young guys do who are on the bubble -- but it finally became too much. He'll be back, but for a guy whose game is speed, a foot injury is a big deal. One of our web guys and I had a plan to be there tomorrow night for a "homecoming" story of sorts, catching up with him on the field before the game, but with him hurt, we scrapped it.

It's a tough time for Seawolves baseball right now. With Travis, TK, and Nick Tropeano all on the DL and Joe Nathan pitching like a 42-year-old in AAA, we've got nobody close to the majors. Catcher Pat Cantwell was backing up in AAA, but got traded from Texas to Toronto, demoted to AA, and how HE'S on the DL too. We've got two guys at high-A with Pittsburgh, but even one of them is hurt.

Oy.

Re: IGT #43 5/23 who's your Padre?

Good article in the Ringer about the Padres attempts to get good quickly a few years (getting Kemp, Upton, Kimbrel) and then nuking that formula and going full NBA-style tank job and carrying a handful of Rule V turds.

As one would imagine, it’s rare for a player to make his major league debut without having previously played above A-ball or in a high-level international league such as the NPB, the KBO, or Cuba’s Serie Nacional. In the 37 full seasons since 1980, 27 such players have debuted in the majors in April, according to some sifting of Baseball Prospectus data. No other team in that time has had more than one. During the “bonus baby” years of the 1940s, ’50s, and ’60s, some teams would carry a couple of players with no minor league track records, but what the Padres are doing may be unprecedented since the dark ages of baseball, before Branch Rickey brought farm teams into vogue.

Looks like their 3 Rule V guys are still hangin around, too.

I had always thought that pitcher Billy McCool had jumped from A ball directly to the Reds in 1961. But I just checked it out. He actually spent a short time with the Reds' AAA affiliate before joining the Reds. It was in San Diego, then a Pacific Coast League city.

Looks like "TBD" for Thursday has been "D'd".

The Pads called up 6-foot, 4-inch, 24-year old Dominican righty Dinelson Lamet. Whether he brings his 11.5 K/9 with him is also TBD.

I guess Hansel deserved this but hopefully just as a quick get-your-shit-together spanking.

I have to say if Reed goes down, he's the next guy I'd wanna try as closer so getting him "fixed" more important than blowout man Montero.

Re: IGT #43 5/23 who's your Padre?

I agree that Hansel shouldn't be thrown to the bottom of some well and forgotten about, but they had to do something because allowing him near the big boy mound just isn't an option at the moment.
12 ER allowed (plus 4 more inherited) on 10 hits including 4 HRs and 4 walks in his last 3 outings/2.2 innings* is just so stunningly bad that it can't be ignored.
This from a guy who had allowed just 3 runs over previous 18 outings/19 innings - although he wasn't exactly stingy with the inherited runners then either even if that can often be chalked up to bad
luck and/or SSS

* Broken down, he faced 20 batters in those 3 outings, retiring just six (3 Ks, 1 GO, 1 PO, 1 FO). He got the other two outs for the 2.2 IP via caught stealings - both had to be challenged and reversed
to get the call, one ended an inning or who knows where it could have ended. The other 14 hitters racked up 2 singles, 4 doubles, 4 HRs, plus 3 BBs and an IW.
More extra base hits than outs = Not Good

Boy, I hope so, because I can't see having all that much confidence in him right now. Heck, I literally forgot he was in the rotation the other night when explaining rotations to MiniWolf. "It's Wheeler tonight, then Milone, then deGrom, then Gsellman... then whoever the fifth guy is, then Wheeler will pitch again on Thursday." I'm the worst.

Harvey's 'line' for the night doesn't read all that bad: 5 innings, 2 runs, 3 hits, 6 Ks, and really only one hard-hit out. The only problem of course was the walks (4) and the pitch count, essentially needing
6-1/2 innings worth of pitches just to get through five.
He at least did get a bit better as things went on, especially once he decided that going 3-0 to the leadoff hitter in each of the first three innings! wasn't a good idea.

unfortunately, we are stuck in Vegas. you want to send him to AA? i dont think he belongs here right now and the fact that our AAA-Affiliate is in a city known for vices isnt a reason to keep him in NY.

Re: IGT #43 5/23 who's your Padre?

I'm not even sure if Harvey can be sent to the minors at this point. But even if they can they won't, nor should they.

It would be one thing if Matz and Syndergaard were here, and if Gsellman and deGrom were pitching better, and if Lugo was capable of taking his slot for a couple of turns, and if Wheeler wasn't
already on a pace to hit his innings limit in like early August ... but currently none of those things are the case and tonight was enough of a sign of progress (5 IP, 2 ER, 6K, 4 H) that you send him
out there again in five days.

THouGhTs oN thE Game!!!!1

The Tuesday Night Lunchclub is now 2-1 with 1 rainout.

Ran into the Faith&Fears prior to the game on the concourse.

I found a beer I hadn't expected to find-- Mikkeller "Henry Hops" which Ceetar tells me is EXCLUSIVE. I bought it for the can design with the weird 87-ish script and was surprised to find it wasn't local, but from of all places San Diego and tasted like it. I would say the hoppiest thing you can get at that building.

The entire game was about Conforto's leadoff at-bat -- he fouled off a million pitches then crushed one over the fence. He's really locked in. If he keeps this up he'll be the best leadoff hitter the Mets ever had. I like him there.

Doodoo quietly had also had a big game, while Flores and Bruce were lucky.

I'd like to see another replay of Flores' hit in that inning. I know the runner was being held on base which kept the first baseman there but he wasn't running on the pitch, so we couldn't figure out where the f the 2Bman was. It was like a little league play where one kid isn't paying attention and the whole game collapses. I guess he was positioned weirdly but I didn't notice it. Too bad for the Padre Shift.

This is not news but the Padres look absolutely terrible in dark blue. It doesn't belong! I liked them better as a visitor in their "Sand" colored jerseys but I mean, this is what's what's wrong with them: They have no identity at all. Even their beers dress in someone else's clothing.

You knew Harvey was going to give some of it back so the big inning was a huge blessing. Three of his innings ended on a hard-hit ball with men on base. A better team would probably have destroyed him.

I didn't like that Craig Stammen got away with 3.1 innings of clean relief. I was hoping they'd go deeper and discover which of their position players also pitched.

Speaking for the few of us in Section 508, the Mets aren't a serious thing still. Even after the big lead the cheers were thick with irony, fear and mild derision. Nobody believes in Harvey, no one's cheers didn't include the subtext "if this wasn't the Padres..." We still believe they can get better but still aren't convinced.

Re: IGT #43 5/23 who's your Padre?

Not for nothing, but maybe, as folks are advocating for Harvey to go down and work his act out against AAA competition, that's pretty much what he got last night against the Padres.

And speaking of playing against AAA in the majors. I want to see Nimmo getting Granderson's playing time yesterday. He may only just be pulling out of a tailspin (and went 0-4 last night), but that's more than Grandy is doing, and the outfield is going to get real crowded again if and when Céspedes comes back.

read somewhere that fwiw (not much) Harvey is in the top 5 or so for 'best' lineups faced.

In addition to Henry Hops there's a Say Hey Sally (a pilsner), which is a great name imo. Mikkeller is Danish (As is his brother, Evil Twin) though he did open a microbrewery/pub in San Diego, and Evil Twin brews at Two Roads in CT a bunch. I digress.

I don't know if it's the hoppiest (I haven't had it) there are a few other options

I hate to give the Post any kind of kudos, but that headline makes that a definite Headline Contest contender this coming off season.

Oh, yeah, I agree. It was his turning it into a punchline (that fell flat) that was goofy. I thought he was on a roll.

Come on, their making fun of X ("It's xylophone. It's always xylophone, unless it's x-ray, but that's kind of not a word.") was awesome.

Yeah, I know, but he really baited-and-switched me. He was making this really good point about cultural imperialism, and they he lands with a fake complaint of "And then they stole 14 letters from us."

It was a deft fakeout, but I was getting excited listening to him talk some powerful social theory shit to me. I was finally getting the full-on Yalie treatment IN MY FACE from Ronnie. He was touching on post-colonial theory, ideological imperialism, de-linguicization ... and then he turns it all into a Harvard Lampoon punchline.

We get satire everywhere. Wouldn't it be great to get a controversy-courtin' social theory treatise from Ron every now and then? Why should Keith be the only high-risk broadcaster in the booth?

Re: IGT #43 5/23 who's your Padre?

One of the first times we ever watched Matt Harvey pitch was his Cincinnati in August 2012. We were in Bermuda at the time, and watched from The Outback, our favorite sports bar on the island. So we figured on Tuesday we'd go back to see him again. We were happily surprised to see that the game was already on one of the TV sets and learned that our bartender, a young Bermudian named Greg, is a Mets fan due to some relatives he has in Queens. All of the good omens were in place, and that first inning was a thing of beauty. We only stayed for the first few innings (the island is in the Atlantic time zone, and I had an early call for my half marathon the next day), but we figure that any time we're in Bermuda and Harvey is pitching we are required to make our way to the Outback for at least part of the game.

Bar hopping at the local craft brew houses tonight. One of them featured Mikkeller Hoppy Pilsner as a featured option on tap. Remembering this post, I decided to give it a shot. It was actually pretty good. A smooth pilsner with a "hoppy bite" on the finish. A nice change from the Brown Ales, Porters, and Imperial Stouts I generally drink.

That might be the Say Hey Sally (I'm not sure if it's just a rebranding or a new beer)
