IGT 6/7/2017: NYM@TEX, Wheeler@Darvish
Edgy MD Jun 07 2017 03:26 PM |
Starting the year as the Mets #5 pitcher, and the one most likely to get babied, Zack Wheeler is suddenly the Mets most reliable starter, in relative terms.

Well, I called that Reyes return, but I'm surprised to see Flores sitting instead of Cabrera or Granderson. But I'm surprised every time I see Granderson.
|
d'Kong76 Jun 07 2017 09:12 PM Re: IGT 6/7/2017: NYM@TEX, Wheeler@Darvish |
Flores isn't sitting, unless I posted the wrong lineup.

John Cougar Lunchbucket Jun 07 2017 09:17 PM Re: IGT 6/7/2017: NYM@TEX, Wheeler@Darvish |
Walker's sitting, hopefully as a result of that steamy dump of an at-bat last night where we had 1st and 3rd, 1 out, and he popped out to Beltre. Cleanup hitter my ass.

A Wheeling Darvish.
|
Edgy MD Jun 07 2017 10:01 PM Re: IGT 6/7/2017: NYM@TEX, Wheeler@Darvish |
Sorry, I looked for Florry at third, and didn't see him there and jumped to a conclusion. Only his fourth start of the season at second, and I'd guess his first since Walker came off the DL.

Rockin' Doc Jun 08 2017 12:28 AM Re: IGT 6/7/2017: NYM@TEX, Wheeler@Darvish |
Speaking of a big steaming dump, that's what Wheeler appears to be taking on the mound right now.
|
Rockin' Doc Jun 08 2017 12:31 AM Re: IGT 6/7/2017: NYM@TEX, Wheeler@Darvish |
Wheeler gets the ground ball he needs, but Mazara beats the relay throw at first by quite a bit. Called out, but that will never stand up to review.
|
Rockin' Doc Jun 08 2017 12:34 AM Re: IGT 6/7/2017: NYM@TEX, Wheeler@Darvish |
Wheeler gets a second ground ball, this time the double play is completed. So nice job by Wheeler limiting the Rangers to only 1 run after the bases being leaded with no outs. Could be big in this game.

What's the average number of pitches thrown by Met starters in the 1st innings of games this year?
|
cooby Jun 08 2017 12:50 AM Re: IGT 6/7/2017: NYM@TEX, Wheeler@Darvish |
According to my calculations the average is 89 pitches in the first inning.

My unofficial over/under on the number of hits the Mets will get tonight is 1 1/2. Later

Still only one hit, but it was a good one - a Brucekaboom.
|
Frayed Knot Jun 08 2017 01:31 AM Re: IGT 6/7/2017: NYM@TEX, Wheeler@Darvish |
Wheeler is actually down to almost a normal pitch count despite that long first inning. 2nd, 3rd, and 4th have gone much quicker for him.
|
Fman99 Jun 08 2017 01:36 AM Re: IGT 6/7/2017: NYM@TEX, Wheeler@Darvish |
This is going better, so far.

So Nolan has a statue* outside of the stadium down there even though his tenure as a Ranger was far less than his was as either an Angel or Astro and only slightly longer than as a Met.
|
Rockin' Doc Jun 08 2017 01:48 AM Re: IGT 6/7/2017: NYM@TEX, Wheeler@Darvish |
Nice 4-6-3 DP to end the inning. Cabrerra got away with the neighborhood play as DeShields was baring down on him.

Jay "Love Me Two Times" Bruce. Goes Kaboom again.
|
Frayed Knot Jun 08 2017 01:55 AM Re: IGT 6/7/2017: NYM@TEX, Wheeler@Darvish |
|
He was probably still on the base because every force play at 2nd gets challenged these days even if the fielder is off by fractions of an inch. Meanwhile, another one by Jay Bruise
|
Rockin' Doc Jun 08 2017 02:01 AM Re: IGT 6/7/2017: NYM@TEX, Wheeler@Darvish |
Remember when the Mets spent most of the offseason shopping Jay Bruce and couldn't find any takers? I think he will be far more marketable going into the trade deadline this season.
|
Frayed Knot Jun 08 2017 02:10 AM Re: IGT 6/7/2017: NYM@TEX, Wheeler@Darvish |
Wheeler now at a pitch count that's lower than the average through six innings.
|
Rockin' Doc Jun 08 2017 02:14 AM Re: IGT 6/7/2017: NYM@TEX, Wheeler@Darvish |
Wheelr started out pretty shaky, but he was able to get the ground ball when he needed it. He has been solid and is amazingly only only at 85 pitchers through 6 innings.

That would be DD Jr. iow, you've not gone through a time warp. Papa De last played in 2002 Golf Clap for Mr Wheeler. I think that's probably it for him tonight.

Rockin' Doc Jun 08 2017 03:11 AM Re: IGT 6/7/2017: NYM@TEX, Wheeler@Darvish |
Reyes with a soft grounder up the middle. Odor fields it and spikes the throw in the dirt and Andrus can't handle it cleanly. Reynolds scores to give Mets the lead.
|
Rockin' Doc Jun 08 2017 03:17 AM Re: IGT 6/7/2017: NYM@TEX, Wheeler@Darvish |
the Mets are 3 outs away from a a nice win. Come on Reed.

Reynolds was so deep against Gallo that he practically needed a relay man for that 4-3 put-out.
|
Edgy MD Jun 08 2017 03:21 AM Re: IGT 6/7/2017: NYM@TEX, Wheeler@Darvish |
Mets win a game with four hits, a night after losing a game despite a million of 'em.

Benjamin Grimm Jun 08 2017 01:14 PM Re: IGT 6/7/2017: NYM@TEX, Wheeler@Darvish |

I think the official scorer should have the discretion to give the win to Wheeler in a game like this. I know that there's the "brief-and-ineffective" rule, but you rarely see it, and when it does get invoked, the win seems to always go to the pitcher who came after Mr. Brief-And-Ineffective, and not to the one who preceded him. Anyway... Cast your vote!
|
Frayed Knot Jun 08 2017 01:22 PM Re: IGT 6/7/2017: NYM@TEX, Wheeler@Darvish |
||
Yes, I think that's right. There's no precedence for retroactively assigning the win to a guy who wasn't in the game at any point during or after the lead was grabbed for good. So that leaves only Reed but, since you can't get a win and a save in the same game, the 'W' goes to Mr. Vulture du jour.
