IGT 6/11/17: NYM@ATL -- Seth, What Can He Do?

G-Fafif
Jun 11 2017 01:55 AM

Seth Lugo makes his first start of 2017. The Mets make Jaime Garcia sorry he came to the ballpark. 1:35 PM on WPIX.

Don't peer into the dugout for T.J. Rivera, Tyler Pill or Matt Reynolds. All have been optioned in the name of healthy bodies.

Hopefully he got his rest as he and the boys were playing all night on Saturday.

That was my first thought, too. But there really isn't any other position player to move, unless you feel ready to DFA Reyes. I'm not sure I'm there yet. The head scratcher to me was optioning Pill rather than Neil "The Human Torch" Ramirez.

Re: IGT 6/11/17: NYM@ATL -- Seth, What Can He Do?

Michael Conforto – LF

Wilmer Flores – 1B
Jay Bruce – RF
Neil Walker – 2B
Asdrúbal Cabrera – SS
René Rivera – C
José Reyes – 3B
Seth Lugo - RHP

Re: IGT 6/11/17: NYM@ATL -- Seth, What Can He Do?

The lefty knocks both a hot Granderson and a slumping Duda out of the lineup.

Remember, after the recent transactions, the Mets are down to five infielders, and the two regular middle infielders are balky.

2nd and 3rd, nobody out.

Three outs, nobody in.

I'm sure that won't haunt us in this one-run game.

Not only do the right field seats seem to have some weird stainless steal fronts, but one of the aisles seems to be blocked off by a pair of Beverly Hillbillies planks nailed in place.

Nicely turned. Nice stretch from Wilma, too.

Is it me, or is Senor Flowers' D (at first, anyway) improving of late along with the bat?

So a 6 man rotation is dumb, but if you were to take somebody out of the rotation right now, it'd either be deGrom or Harvey.

Re: IGT 6/11/17: NYM@ATL -- Seth, What Can He Do?

Someone obviously failed to tell these new guys -- Matz & Lugo -- that 90 pitches is the proper amount for four innings, not seven.
I'm willing to let them slide for now but pitch count efficiency is not something we're going to continue to tolerate around here.

i hate it.

i know Cespedes is our "best hitter" but Conforto is #2 and isn't coming off a recent long-term DL trip.

if Cespedes is available to hit this inning, he should have hit for Rivera with 1st and 2nd nobody out.

Re: IGT 6/11/17: NYM@ATL -- Seth, What Can He Do?

I don't know man. It was the last call of the game. And the gap between #1 and #2 widens when the Braves were deploying a pitcher created in a secret government lab for the express purpose of retiring Conforto.

And the Mets already put Grandy in the game, so there's no problem replacing Conforto. A justifiable move.

As long as the tying run doesn't score on account of Grandy's (lack of) arm.

Yeah, it's kind of important to remember that this isn't exactly an offensive juggernaut out there, especially without FFF.

Let's see if this continues against the Cubs and Nats.

Didn't matter in the end, but the pinch hitting sends the wrong

the wrong message to Conforto ("we think you still can't hit lefties even though you have a .378 OBP against them this year") is its own separate issue. my issue is that there were far inferior hitters that you cold have pinch hit for earlier in the inning.

Our burgeoning all-star stud shouldn't be pulled for anyone is my issue.
I have far fewer managing issues with Collins as many but I think it was
a bad message. We'll see. I'd like to think Michael shouldn't be looking
over his shoulder to see if Skip is gonna pass on him at this point.

Re: IGT 6/11/17: NYM@ATL -- Seth, What Can He Do?

In the moment I thought it was a bad move, but I think it'll be rarely repeated. Cespedes will be playing more and there won't be many PH appearances. And Conforto will be playing every day. More likely will be Conforto moving to left late in the game and Lagares coming in for defense in CF.

LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr

Re: IGT 6/11/17: NYM@ATL -- Seth, What Can He Do?

Ces for Conforto was weird, all the more so because a gimpy Ces or Grandy or pretty much anyone the Met bench has to offer at that point represents a pretty significant defensive downgrade in left, in what could still be a one-run game. Gave them-- arguably-- a better shot to put it away, but gave them significantly less cover if the gamble worked out suboptimally (which, given the odds of, y'know, baseball, was the way it was always more likely to turn out). Ended up okay, but, yeah, while it's not the most indefensible late-inning thing Terry has okayed in the last month, it probably wasn't advisable.

We were listening on XM while driving home, but, I mean, he went super yard on a ball the day before with the bases loaded in the 9th. I didn't have a problem with him coming in against a lefty to try the same thing a second day in a row.

Considering this came followed an encouraging doubleheader sweep and fell on a Sunday, this victory may be one of the topsiest of the year. It's certainly rare to see the 2017 Mets come out of a weekend on anything like an upswing.

Right? Sundays are usually reserved for losing by 2 touchdowns and suffering a demoralizing injury.
