Amatuer draft starts 1 month from today and "mock drafts" out there suggest the Mets are romantically linked to Minnesota high school righty Sam Carlson, described as a "broad-bodied workhorse." Hi, Sam. Mets draft 20th, 59th, 97th, and then every 30th pick after that. I demand they draft the guys who'll never get injured for their careers. Shirley that's part of the scouting report; if the box next to 'Gets Injured a Lot' is checked, simply pass him by.

Well, one thing that's surely in the scouting report is high school pitchers are high-risk players. Especially Ward Melville High School pitchers.

A HS righty has never gone #1 overall (Josh Beckett = #2) but that may change this year with Hunter Greene, a slugging SS who also throws 102 Ward Melville was known as a big lacrosse school back in my day. If we wind up with any of the above they've got the potential to be the best Sam, Keston, Tanner, or Logan we've ever had.

I just looked it up. The team's name is officially "Anteaters". I think that would have been better on the uniform than "Eaters".

Also, that logo looks more like ICU than UCI. The "I" is clearly stacked on top, which implies (to me, at least) that that's the first letter I should be reading.

Not sure how Portland and Oakland feel about that, but it's their fault they're not cool enough to have LeBron James.

Well we did see the D'BACKS this week. BTW, I hated their Game 1 and 3 get-ups but the blue-trimmed ones for the middle game seemed to me a nice-looking way to do modern and overdone.

I guess that was the one where Gary and Keith were discussing whether it was teal or turquoise. Gary said the Arizona media guide insisted the trim was teal although I certainly think of turquoise first as a desert blue while associating teal more as a marine shade.

The compound-nickname thing may be a latter-day trend in some circles but it has long history in the NBA where teams with polysyllabic names created desperate challenges for uniform designers and headline editors alike, so teams like the Knickerbockers, Seventy-Sixers, Trailblazers, and Supersonics, were the Knicks, Sixers, Blazers, and Sonics pretty much from the start.

Seawolf Toby Handley leads the nation in triples with 8 and has a .351/.484/.619 slash line. Was drafted by Houston in the 33rd round last year but didn't sign. Have to figure he gets the call from someone in the middle rounds this year.

Baseball Prospectus ranks their draft prediction by most interesting name. I thought only we did that? Maybe BP, like Gary Cohen, reads this place and steals our ideas. They assign Hans Crouse (RHP from a Calif HS) to the Mets, a player they say sounds like the 'villain in an action movie about a tough, street-wise cop who saves the day with guile and wit' 1st round goes off Monday at 6PM, just as we're ready to drop the puck at home vs the defending WS champs.

More recent MLB.com Fake News Draft has Mets taking a different RHP, Nate Pearson of Central Florida Junior College who "pounds the zone" with 97mph fastballs, if you know what I mean. The other guys we've been linked to falling to lower projected spots. There is also word that we like California high school first baseman Nick Pratto, but most Fake Drafts having him gone when 20th pick comes around. Pratto is famous for a walkoff hit in the Little League World Series and is also good enough to be a pitcher.

Jim Callis (mlb.com) in his latest (last?) 1st round mock draft throws out the possibility of a rarity among 1st pick projections: a HS 1st baseman. But, of course, that wouldn't be a novelty for the Mets (see: Smith, Dominic) Specifically Nick Pratto of Huntington Beach, CA [L/L, 6' 1" - 195] who he describes as "the best pure hitter among preps in the draft" where the 20th overall pick is his "absolute floor". Reportedly a good bat, good glove, good athleticism, the big question, as it is for all 1st basemen (I've seen no suggestion that he'll play anywhere else except maybe as a pitcher) is how much power eventually develops. Born during the first week of the 1998 ML post-season -- a point by which some of the crew here were already chatting with each other via the interwebs -- feel free to insert your "I feel old" line here. Other possibilities include: Texas HS OF Tristen Lutz -- big power, big arm, CF now but probably a corner OF later David Peterson, LHP, U-Oregon -- 6'6"/240, big K guy whose stock increased this year when his previously high walk rate plummeted: K/BB this season = 107/6 UCLA RHP Griffin Canning -- smallish for a pitcher (6' 1" - 190) has the "full arsenal" of pitches and the previously mentioned Logan Warmoth (SS UNC) or Keston Hiura from UC Irvine although positional (2B? OF?) and health questions (elbow) make Hiura tough to project.

I like the sound of the Oregon lefty (at least over the Oregon State one), but I'm starting to feel like, as far as power pitchers go, I like the odds of human elbows holding up better against 6-foot-and-shorter guys throwing their hardest than against big-ass, pumped dudes throwing their big-ass, pumped hardest.

Draft projections fall apart pretty quickly, but a small amount of consensus seems to be building around Pearson. He says he isn't surprised that he hit three digits in a bullpen for scouts, that it was always there, but he doesn't unleash it, because he's a starter and he's trying to preserve his strength. When speaking about his stuff, he says "velo" a lot, which strikes me as a little off. Anyway, just look at this babyface trying to look like a badass. An index of players likely to be drafted early on from John Sickels' site. Should be a good tool to play along at home during draft time. MLB is advertising that the draft starts at 6PM but it's looking like it really gets underway at 7 so it'll be happening during game time. At six they're merely doing the pre-draft show to lead up to the draft since it's not like there's any time to talk between picks

These rankings, as NFL fans have failed to realize for like 90 years in a row now, are simply opinions and not etched on tablets anywhere. The snag is that he's already had TJ surgery and so that plays into the process.

Insta-analysis from Jim Callis at MLB.com: Peterson is a polished lefty who took a step forward this season, striking out 20 in a game against Arizona State while ranking among the NCAA Division I leaders in strikeout-to-walk ratio. His low-90s fastball and slider are his two best pitches. He can also mix in a curveball and changeup. I can see him getting quickly to the big leagues as a mid-rotation starter.

2nd round pick (59th overall): Mark Vientos, 3B, American Heritage School (Fla) Sickels: "Very young but good offensive tools, erratic, only 17" more stuff 6' 4" / 190, just 17 and 6 months, youngest player expected to be drafted on Day One. SS now but probably 3B in the long view. "It seems likely that Vientos’ youth and bat will be too much for teams to pass up at the top of the draft and that he won’t get to college. The exact shape his abilities will take down the line is uncertain, but the ceiling is certainly high enough to be worth a gamble."

Miami commit. Feel for hitting belied by his age, with potential plus-power and great bat speed. Interesting. Plus, the youth (early HS grads of the world, unite!) gives you an extra year to work on extracting maximum Machadoness from this lanky piece of human. Peterson IS a college junior, though, so you can't exactly skimp on his bonus and focus on buying out the kid's commitment.

They got 2/3 of the Stanford outfield now as they picked Brodey's Bro, Matt Winaker, in the 5th round.

Been keeping half an eye on this today, and it looks like the sex offender from Oregon State, Luke Heimlich, hasn't been picked yet and we're in the middle of the ninth round already. Gonna be interesting to see if someone just can't pass up the so-called "talent" this far down the draft and just deal with the headaches.

7th - Conor O'Neill, RHP, Cal Northridge 8th - Trey Cobb, RHP, Oklahoma State 9th - Cannon Chadwick, RHP, U Arkansas Fayetteville 10th - Stephen Villines, RHP, U Kansas All these guys, the ones from Round 6 thru 10, are college Seniors which means low signing bonuses although there doesn't appear to be any 'over-draft' types for whom they'll need this saved cash for. And once you get beyond Round 10 the picks are no longer subject to the combined bonus cap.

[crossout]i assume someone takes the flyer and waits to see before even offering him a contract - the player isn't always guilty - look at how La'el Collins got completely fucked over because of rumors he involved in a murder a few days before the draft - he was never charged and as far as some quick googling says it looks like everyone seems to think he was never even really a "suspect" just a person the police wanted to talk to as he'd dated the dead person.[/crossout] OE - googled it and he pled guilty (i had not seen the full story pre-draft), i'm guessing nobody takes him and he quietly signs with someone when the focus isnt on the draft

There should be one round called "The Nepotism Round" where each team drafts someone with some connection, however tangential, to a past or present player, coach, manager or staffer. And then there should be "The Local Round" where each team drafts a local player, if only for the inevitable article in the [url]Pennysaver.

Quickie insta-analysis from John Sickels New York Mets 1-20) David Peterson, LHP, University of Oregon 2-59) Mark Vientos, 3B, Plantation, Florida 3-97) Quinn Brodey, OF, Stanford University 4-127) Tony Dibrell, RHP, Kennesaw State University 5-157) Matt Winaker, OF Stanford University 6-187) Marcel Renteria, RHP, New Mexico State University ANALYSIS: Peterson destroyed college competition this year thanks to mechanical refinements boosting command of his fastball/slider/curve/change combination. He could reach the majors quickly as a number three or four starter. Vientos is one of the youngest players in the draft and has a highly promising bat but questions about his defense; he’ll need time but the upside is quite high. College picks were the following theme, with the Stanford pair offering power (Brodey) and a good eye with some athleticism (Winaker). Dibrell needs more polish than some of the other college arms but can hit 95 while Renteria can hit 96. SLEEPERS: Connor O’Neil (7th round, Cal State Northridge) and Trey Cobb (8th round, Oklahoma State) offer versatility while Matt Duce (14th round, Dallas Baptist) is a catcher with a strong glove and a chance to hit. It seems that Daniel Alfonzo isn't going to sign, and that's OK, I guess. I mean, a 38th round draft choice isn't the most valuable of commodities. But I'm struck by the same question that irked me when the Mets made J.J. Franco a late-round draft choice in 2014, and earlier when they made Glen Johnson a late-round draft choice in 2007. If the Mets are going to do team employees the grace of drafting their kids, you'd think the parents would give the team a heads-up that their kids prefer to go to school. On the other hand, maybe that's the favor: By selecting the players in the draft, the team makes them better recruitment bait and improves their college prospects. Not bad so far as the Mets have 32 of their 40 picks in the fold, including all of the top ten. Strange to see some of the mid-round guys get small bonuses while the late-round guys see six figures. Mac Lozer, though — there's a guy really living up to his name. Fire your agent, Mac! Classic quote from 40th rounder Ronnie Taylor, Jr. “I pretty much rely on my fastball. It gets up to around 94 mph, and my slider can hit up to 85 mph,” Taylor said. “I just throw it as hard as I can and hope they don’t hit it.” That's the sort of money quote you want to read from a 40th rounder.
