1,000+ Games of Terry

That Terry has now managed more games than any other NYM skipper -- and almost certainly beat every 'Under' bet that was made -- got me thinking about when he was first hired.
And when I thought of that it occurred to me that I have absolutely no recollection of what my thoughts were back when he was first hired.

Fortunately, that's what we have the archives for.

Final Four

and

Welcome Terry Collins

Most of us were more against than for (Hale seemed to be the majority's Chip of choice) although most also admitted to be basing that on nothing other than gut feeling.
Hale got the Diamondbacks job in 2015 and lasted there until 2016
Some interesting reading as always.

I'm still whelmed.
And I still wish him luck.

I was thinking about Terry this morning and how remarkable it's been that he outlasted what at first looked like a quick hitch as a face for a rebuilding franchise and stepping stone to a "rea; manager" who'd take them the rest of the way. But, he served both roles and that led to his accomplishment. Part of it I think was that the Mets weren't close to be "ready" to contend after year 2, and part of it was Terry's charm winning over the writers.

I will say this, he's lasted longer, and longer on merit, than I would have guessed for sure.

I also convinced myself that the Sept. 9 "TBA" promotion will probably be a Collins/Alderson joint farewell announcement. Maybe Wright too.

I give a lot of credit to Terry. He nurtured a team without much talent through the lean years and, as far as I'm concerned, got the most out of those teams. He also took two teams in 2015 and 2016 that could have easily given up mid-season and got them through adversity and to the postseason.

I honestly felt (and still feel) that he was originally hired as a placeholder to babysit the club through the tough times due to the Madoff losses. But, I'm glad he got the chance to continue with the team once the talent matured and the payroll increased.

I find this surprising, wouldn't have thought he was here that long.

It is amazing to me. It might be time for Sandy/Terry to sail off together.

Terry is 67, Sandy 69. I'm pretty sure both things will happen. Warthen is nearly 65 and been here forever, he too could depart. I see a big changing of the guard ahead.

I fear Jeff thinking it'd be okay just to leave the general managing to Ricco, and taking over Sandy's "CEO-ish" role himself. They attritioned out DePodesta already.

The next manager is a puzzler though.

I know it's not always how these things work, but Pedro Lopez makes a lot of sense.

The funny thing is that after all this time, with a twilight-ish manager, I'd think the succession would be planned out. That the guy would have a few years of AAA skippering and another two years on Terry's staff. I tend to think Wally was Terry's favored successor but the suits didn't see it that way at all, and the persistence of Wally at AAA has delayed Lopez from getting his feet wet.

I don;t think the Mets want to consider a first-time manager anymore, but I suppose it could depend on Ricco's disposition to that. But yes you figure they ought to be thinking about a succession plan by now.

Yeah, when he was hired I envisioned him as a transition man to Wally. I'm guessing he's very good at Wilpon Management.

Warthen's successor, should he leave soon, is pretty obviously Viola.

I think a lot of it depends if these guys go out high or low.

Just put them on the DL; they should be back in a few months.
