Whither Montero?

61 walks in 93 major league innings. What am I missing here? Why are we still giving him chances? Yes, he came up gangbusters through the system and was brilliant through 2013. But it's time to move on.

This is in many threads now.

Not sure. My question is [fimg=100:1dxn7m4x]https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/61Ab-td5fbL._SY355_.jpg[/fimg:1dxn7m4x]

I'm guessing Matz will return the next time this slot in the rotation comes around. But it's Pill the next time a new arm is needed.

Re: Whither Montero?

I suspect they see something that we don't, because it's something that's not showing up in games. His pitches still seem 'quality' and they seem to think it's more a mental/approach thing than a "can't throw strikes" thing. So you correct the the mental problems and suddenly he's good. (It's the wildness that's the main issue)

But I think if/when that was going to happen, it's not going to happen with the Mets. I half expect him to be sent away today for an extra reliever, though I guess if you were going to do that you probably don't need him coming to Pittsburgh with you.

Re: Whither Montero?

I know - I just figured it deserved its own thing because it's such a puzzle. Probably should have searched for the preseason expectations thread but whatever.

Wonder if someone else has a similar head case 26yo pitcher who could use a change-of-scenery trade.

Re: Whither Montero?

He's certain nailed the Warthen slider this season. It's a quality pitch. But right now, it's just another pitch he's not controlling well.

He got Myers on some fastballs up, and that was perhaps his best moment. But mostly, everything is down and darting to the left. You've got to be willing to pitch up a little, if only to set up the breaking stuff down that you're featuring. (Unless you're a sinkerballer or something.)

Re: Whither Montero?

felt like he was 0-2 on everyone. I guess that could be a factor of them knowing not to bother swinging against him, but it's usually a good sign.

And from there he just..doesn't throw strikes? but he clearly can because he wouldn't be 0-2 on everyone then. I dunno.

I mean, he didn't walk anyone the second two innings. He actually pitched kinda well. In a vacuum, I'd have been slightly encouraged by this start. If it was Rosario at SS and not Reyes and Montero walked 2 over 3 innings and allowed no runs maybe it's a different story?

But it's just too much at this point. Why should we have faith he'll figure it out next time?

Re: Whither Montero?

He has simply not had enough success although I agreee he has moments. There was some debate I encountered on twitter last night - before I fell asleep on the couch thanks to the balh shit on the TV - that Sandy was calling the shots on the rotation but I think maybe Terry was saying "get this guy out of my options!" Either way I can't see a situation where this ends up good for us. Someone else, maybe.

We can call him Terry's Little Helper.

Hopefully Pill will provide the cure to what ails the Mets rotation.

Montero throws one good pitch followed by four bad ones. Lather, rinse, repeat.

He's loooooooong overdue for a DFA.

Re: Whither Montero?

One thing with Montero is he's out of options I believe so we risk losing him to another club who might be intrigued enough to work with his "stuff" (95 mph fb, variety of pitches) and the Mets aren't in a position to be giving guys away at this point. I wonder if instead of DFAing him they work out a trade for some else's out-of-options struggling pitcher.

I wouldn't touch Trump's wig with a 49-and-a-half-foot pole. That thing is probably more disgusting than a Port Authority bathroom.

Re: Whither Montero?

I have a rather funny Port Authority bathroom story, but
this is a family forum.
