x minus three.

Coming soon, in this space.....

Here's a preview. It's Bud Harrelson, ex-Ranger, ex-Met. Born on D-Day.

Re: Rangers Stormed the Beaches. The D-Day Card Thread.

X minus two.

General Teddy Roosevelt, Jr. storms Utah Beach on D-Day.

[fimg=333:3h0vwcq0]https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/e2/Ted_Cane_France.jpg[/fimg:3h0vwcq0]

Teddy was no Ranger. And he was too politically tarnished by then to run for a seat on the US Senate. But he was a General. And a man of privilege and powerful connections, who could have avoided the battle effortlessly.

Never knew Catalanotto had been an infielder. Or that Elvis Valentine was ever a Ranger.

Amazing how that guy was so washed up so early.

Some trace Valentine's decline to getting hit in the face by a pitch.

The other thing that stands out looking back at his stats is not just his lack of walks but that his plate discipline, never high to begin with, seemed to go down as he aged.
In his one full-ish season with the Mets he walked 5 times in 350 PA, so his respectable .288 BA was accompanied by a .294 OBA

Still the author of one of my favorite OF throws of all time, a spin-o-rama he did off a high first hop of a bloop just inside the RF line that nailed Pete Rose trying to go from 1st to 3rd

Haven't checked the numbers, but it looks like Frank Catalanotto had as many cards as a Ranger as he had hits with the Mets.

I don't think a typo ever confused me as muchas this one. I sat thinking for a moment that Ellis Valentine played alongside Andre Dawkins in Montreal and was eventually had a short stint as a Met, but I couldn't remember Elvis Valentine at all. I went to Baseballreference.com looking for the mysterious Elvis. I eventually figured out that Edgy had miss-typed the 1st name. My post are are gnerally replete with miss-typed letters/words, but Edgy typed it so I took it as gospel.*

*I am not trying to be a smart ass in this post. I truly was perplexed by Elvis Valentine and it never dawned on me that Edgy might have missed a key stroke in the name until I went to the internet to check it out. Of course, it was $1 a slice pizza night at one of the local brew pubs, so that may have added to my easily being confused.

I just gave him an instant nick-a-name. Sort of like "Andre Dawkins."

I mean, Ellis Valentine may have washed up early, but with those awesome Expo threads, rock 'n' roll sideburns*, rocking-back-and-forth stance, and that flaming crossbow of a throwing arm, he was as cool as Elvis, no?

Valentine was fun to watch. He, Andre Dawson, & Tim Raines would have been a great outfield tandem had Valentine remained in Montreal a little longer or Raines made his debut a little sooner.

Andre Dawkins was a 3 point shooting specialist for Duke's men's basketball team a few years ago. I can only claim early onset of senility for confusing his name with that of MLB Hall of Famer, Andre Dawson. I'm a double threat poster, I not only have typos throughout my posts, but I apparently confuse people and/or facts rather easily. Getting old is hell.

Not it isn't. Think of the bright side. You can say and do the weirdest stuff you never did when you were younger, and people just chalk it up to "old age" instead of getting ticked off at you. Trust me on this one, Doc.

I keep telling myself that getting old sure beats the alternative.
