I got a haircut last night. My barber's name is David and he's got tourette's syndrome. I see him every 5-6 weeks. He straight-razors my neck & burns after every cut but last night inadvertently caught a lumpy freckle on the high cheekbone that were I shaggier would be safely beneath the sideburn line.

I was and still am bleeding.

Here's what we need to know for this thread:

1- Barber/hardresser's name
2- How often you see him/her
3- Your best Fun Fact or haircut-related story.

Participation is mandatory even for KC.

1. Jenna
2. Every 4-6 weeks
3. Proper haircuts are hard to find. I've been going to Jenna for years and she is great. The last time I went, she had called in sick, so I went with a sub. It was maybe the worst haircut I've ever had...asymmetrical and lumpy. My next appointment can not come quickly enough.

1. "Dad"
2. For haircuts, every six to eight weeks, I guess. But other times too, for non-haircut related reasons.
3. I'm almost 54 years old, and only three people have ever cut my hair, and they're all direct ancestors of mine: My dad, my mom (only a few times) and my grandfather.

Re: <><><>~~HAIRCUT CHECK~~<><><>

Hair is overrated.

1 - n/a, I do it myself with a trimmer
2 - n/a, whenever I have something important planned so it looks good
3 - I broke up with my high school girlfriend in December of my second year of college. As a budding rock star, I always wanted to let my hair grow out, but she wasn't a fan. As soon as we broke up, I grew it out and added an ill-advised goatee as well. The week before spring break, our college went to a new ID card system, so I had to update my picture -- with four months of awkward hair/facial hair growth. I decided later that spring that it wasn't a good look after all and cut it back, but that ID picture stayed with me for two more years.

The pictures of me from that semester are pretty hilarious in retrospect, though.

Re: <><><>~~HAIRCUT CHECK~~<><><>

My guy's name is Bill. He is the very rare male hetero hairdresser. He works at a place just around the corner from my house that does $7 cuts for men, though most of the ladies and "fellas" who work there range in terms of competence. Which is why I request Bill and wait a few extra minutes for him to be available.

I go once every 5 weeks or so.

My best fun fact is that lots of female hairdressers have rubbed their bosoms on me in various states of intention. What's more fun than that?

1. Alex/Eddy, depending on who's free. I think they're brothers, originally from Russia or thereabouts. I prefer Alex, but I always seem to wind up with Eddy. Mostly I like that they are down the block from where I live and not very far down the block.

2. About every eight weeks, though at present I've pushed it past two months. I'm due.

3. My best friend from high school married the daughter of my longtime barber Mario's business partner, so I wound up standing next to him -- Mario, that is -- during the reception. We each had a drink in our hand and we smiled at each other, but after acknowledging that, hey, here we are, in proximity to one another somewhere other than the barber shop, we had absolutely nothing to say to each other. At that point, I had been going to Mario for 17 1/2 years and, honestly, we never had anything to say to each other beyond very well-honed and unfailingly friendly pleasantries.

MARIO: "Hey, howyoudoin' my frien'?"
ME: "Fine. How are you?"
MARIO: "Good, good. How you daddy?"
ME: "He's good. He should be in soon."
MARIO: "Good, good. How you [mother/sister/wife, depending on lifestage at which this was inquired]?"
ME: "She's good."
MARIO: "Good, good. Same as usual?" referring to my hair.
ME: "Oh yeah."

When it was over, he told me I looked much better and I agreed. This was the dialogue from the summer of 1974 to the week between Christmas and New Year's 1995, twenty-one dependable years in all. Then he retired to Florida, I think.

The marriage between my high school friend and the partner's daughter didn't last a year. "Her father's crazy," my friend told me. I always had that impression from the other chair.

Re: <><><>~~HAIRCUT CHECK~~<><><>

1) Carmine. I've been going to him for 25 years but he's getting old and I'm afraid he's going to retire.
2) Every 4-6 weeks. I have a 'tell' that lets me know I need a haircut. Still have it all despite it not having its original color.
3) I was 10 and I'd been playing pretty hard with the neighborhood kids that morning. My mom took me to get a haircut and I fell asleep in the barber's chair. So I woke up with a buzz cut and my mom said, "I asked the barber what would look best." Of course, this guy had a flattop you could land a helicopter on. That time I waited a full three months before going back and made sure I stayed away from flattop guy.

If Carmine retires and is replaced by a guy with a flattop, I'll be having flashbacks.

1- n/a, either 'clippered' with a Wahl™ or shaved with razor by me, KB checks to make
sure I don't go out in public looking like Pete Rose without a rug.
2- As needed, when I'm in shaving mode I try and do it everyday - less irritating.
3- Sam the Barber (aka Sam the Butcher). In elementary school Sam fucked up more
school pictures than one could count. Everyone was afraid of him. His face was disfigured
and he couldn't move his lower when he talked and he was very talkative and often half
an unlit cigarette hanging out of his mouth. I'm gonna have nightmares lol...

1. Whoever is available at George's Barber Shop
2. Every 5 or 6 weeks
3. Used to go to a different barber shop but it was all Yankees all the time. I liked the old-school vibe and the Sinatra music that was always playing but Derek this and Bernie that did me in. George's always has a foreign soccer game on. The barbers are all Russian.

Re: <><><>~~HAIRCUT CHECK~~<><><>

1- Barber/hardresser's name
I patronize The Blue Spark Barbershop, a hipster hangout down the block from me. I used to hit The Beatnik Barbershop close to where I work, but their brand of hipsterism just seemed so dark and sinister and nihilistic. I had feared the basement location of Blue Spark, but it's proximity to my home made it silly not try them. I had heard they were started by former employees of the Beatnik place.

I don't particularly care who I get. Some cuts are nicer than others, and if I remember, I take a shot of my head from multiple angles after I get a cut I like, to bring back for next time. I usually don't remember, but I find them to be a sunnier brand of hipster. I have since found out that the founder was fired from The Beatnik Barbershop for being too nice. #hipstersins[/list:u]

2- How often you see him/her
Every 10 weeks or so. I should cut that in half, but my hairline has grown so weird in recent years, the prospect depresses me. When I'm piling it up and slicking the sides like I'm in a rockabilly band, it's usually time to see the barber, or join a rockabilly band.[/list:u]

3- Your best Fun Fact or haircut-related story.
I got two.

One: My older sister cut my hair from the time I was 13. She initially didn't know much, but I was her dummy and she got better. By the time I was a high school junior, she could give me the West Village STYLEZ that could get me into the circles of kids who were cooler than me, and sideyes from the homophobic jocks. I was in.

But then I got to college, and inexperience and social awkwardness made it impossible for me to just walk into a strange barbershop and tell a guy what I wanted. I HADN'T BEEN SOCIALIZED TO DEAL WITH BARBERS! So I just let it grow and grow. Not quite Gary Cohen long, but long long, and on a conservative campus, and in a conservative time, when only metaldudes wore their hair past their collars, I stood out. I got noticed, but I didn't notice myself getting noticed, because my hair tended to fall over my face. I resorted first to center parts, then to pony tails and then to hats—first a sort of pork pie felt thing, and then a cowboy hat. A COWBOY HAT!

But that's not the story. The story is that summer between my junior and senior year, alienated by my father refusing to talk to me, I resolved to get it cut. My sister now gone from the house, I parted my hair in the center, drove to a random place in town, waited for an open chair, and handed the female barber my driver's license from my freshman year and asked her to return me to that.

Unbeknownst to me was that this woman was just a temporary fill-in. At the end of her dramatic shearing of my extensive pelt, a fat stereotype of an older Italian sitting in the corner gets up from his perch and introduces himself to me as the proprietor. He apparently had been watching the freakshow with great interest. He kisses me on both cheeks, grabs me by the shoulders and declares. "You walk-a in here, and you look-a like-a Sophia Loren! You leave-a here, you look-a like MARCELLO MASTRIANI!!

He then turns to the barber, hugs her, and says, "PLEASE, come a-work for me full-a-time!" And then she begins to cry. I turn around and see the nice mentally handicapped guy who was our town's odd-jobs guy, sweeping away what I thought was a small dog, that I then realized had recently been attached to my head.

Second Story: My first trip to the Beatnik Barber, awkward small talk commenced. What do you do? Where are you from? Is this haircut for a special occasion?

"Well, I'm going to a funeral?"

Sorry to hear that? Who died?

"Well, actually, my barber." (/drops clippers)[/list:u]

Re: <><><>~~HAIRCUT CHECK~~<><><>

1. The All State Barber School, W.27th St. and Lorain, just down the street from Cleveland's iconic West Side Market. They do an awesome job, and they're cheap.

2. About every eight weeks. If I were still in the corporate world, it would be more like five. But I'm lazy and my girlfriend likes the aging hippie look, anyway.

3. Since the barbers are students, the cuts take a while. A couple of days after my last cut, a woman was a little curious about why it was taking them so long to cut her son's hair. So she politely asked them why. Trouble is, before she asked, she pulled a Glock out of her purse.

Sam or Aaron , both Jews from Kazakhstan, they fled that place and haven't gone back. Sam goes back and forth to Israel , Sam is Arron's nephew and both have a lot of family in Queens and Israel, Aaron seems a bitter sort towards Muslims and Arabs and generally anyone who's not white. On my last trip to Ireland last year he asked if I could possibly find any pre-Euro Irish money...I did and brought backs coins and some notes...he was thrilled. Aaron might also be bitter as he used to work in an upscale Manhattan place and some of his old clients still come to the Bronx for a haircut ....I've been in the shop and seen this...

Re: <><><>~~HAIRCUT CHECK~~<><><>

1) Raye, and she is super-nice.

2) About five weeks, but I work about an hour from home, so sometimes it's a tough to get in on the two nights a week she works late.

3) I have pretty much had the same haircut since I was a kid -- a little shaggier in middle school and high school, a little shorter about 5-10 years ago. After years of only going to old-school barber shops with old guys and striped, spinning poles in front, my wife insisted that I go to her stylist. That was probably a decade or so ago. It is more expensive, but I do see a difference.

One night, I was the last cut of the night and Raye was having fun and knew that I was going right home after the cut and put some sparkly, silver stuff in it that washes right out. She wanted to experiment with it and I thought "What the heck." It looked pretty funny. Except that when I got home, my wife decided that we had to run to the supermarket. Let's just say the guy in the jacket and tie and sparkly silver streaks got some funny looks.

1. Gina, a friend of mine who cuts it at home
2. Every 3-4 months and I'm due
3. I was a model once at a hair show..my hair was down past my elbows. I was reassured they would not cut any of it off since I just had a trim and it was healthy. They swore they would just colour it and then when I got onstage they would just do a style demonstration. I got on stage and they started snipping. I was trying not to freak out in front of the audience. I looked down on the ground and saw all my hair being cut off and the audience gasped. I ran down the catwalk, crying. Backstage the stylist tried to hug me from behind and I elbowed him in the stomach...lol I got a year's supply of free hair care products out of the deal.

Susan

I have my hair cut every two months, give or take, but I see her more often than that because I get my nails done at the same salon.

Susan is planning her first trip to Bermuda, in part because she knows how much I love it, so I've had a lot of fun recently telling her about the island.

Veronica, every 6 weeks or so.
Last time I went, I was told she had injured her arm (Her dog unexpectedly pulled on the leash, she lost her balance and fell on the wrist). She referred her clients to someone else in the place. The substitute gave me an OK cut, but just OK. I'll call next time to make sure Veronica is in before I go.

Re: <><><>~~HAIRCUT CHECK~~<><><>

Robin has been cutting my hair every 5 weeks. She has been cutting my hair (and my wife's) for the past 30 years. She gave both my son and daughter their first haircut. She was the only one to cut either of the kids hair until they each left for college.

My hair was thick, wavy, and unruly in college. Once, when I was long past due for a haircut and was my hair was really starting to bother me, my then girlfriend (current wife) convinced me to let her cut it. To say it didn't quite turn out as either of us had planned, would be a major understatement. To this day, I get a little nervous anytime I see my wife with a pair of scissors.

Re: <><><>~~HAIRCUT CHECK~~<><><>

1. susan had been cutting my hair for about 7 years i think. when i lived in my old apartment, i had a barber, male, seemed straight, who was legit good. we moved further out into the hinterlands, and traveling in to west caldwell seemed a little ridiculous for a haircut. tried a few different places, a few different stylists, and never quite found anyone worth making a point of going back to... until susan. haircut always came out perfect, and growed out well too. i have very thick, fluffy hair that gets wavy when it's longer. susan was the first stylist where i looked good on the first day, and still didn't look ridiculous after three weeks. with her haircuts, i could push out to 4 weeks, or even 5! madness! professional, a good conversationalist but not chatty, and despite working to make the "mens room" an upscale place, was superb with kids and gave minimm and the µmm's great haircuts. and then in january she left haircutting altogether to pursue entrepreneurial endeavors unrelated to haircutting! jeannine is a pale substitute. i mean, i think she's getting better, but she lacks the confidence and the technique, and doesn't quite get the upscale feel going. i think she'll get better, and i really have no interest in hunting around for a better cut anymore. plus she's nice, and i would feel bad going elsewhere. and occasionally susan returns just for a day. but i do always worry about jeannine cutting µmmL's luscious flowing locks....

2. yeah, i get my hair cut, fairly short, every three weeks, unless i have scheduling difficulties. like i said. very thick, fluffy hair that gets wavy and unruly after three weeks. if i had µmmL's hair i'd let that shit grow and grow and grow, and probably die from overheating and dehydration from sweating so much with all that hair (how the heck do you women do it?) but after three weeks i'm due. which reminds me, i need to reschedule my next haircut - softball conflict. which sucks, because i'm totally in need of a new haircut, and it doesn't grow out as well with jeannine doing the cutting....

3. haircut story... uh... one time, back when i was struggling to find a good stylist, i decided, fuck it - do it at home. mrs.mm volunteered. how hard can it be, right? well she took the trimmer, and used the #1 guide, and, starting at my sideburn, went up from there. two problems... one, it was really short. two, the trimmer was shit and struggled to get through my hair. so the haircut was over with me having a short patch just over my left ear, halfway up my head. wonderful. mrs.mm went out to buy a better trimmer, and i had to talk her into finishing hte job, albeit with a longer guide setting for the top. and that was the last time i ever tried cutting my hair at home. not long after, i found susan. whew!

This thread inspired me to call the lovely Michelle for my next cut. She's a family friend who used to have a crush on me when I was Sheila'd, but now I love her (not really), and she's in a relationship with some dude bro. I will bide my time.

I see her about every 5 or so weeks, but wish it was daily.

Pros: Super pretty, funny, gives a really great cut, and it's like hanging out with someone cool, except I look and smell a little better afterward.

Cons: She knows all the stories about my family, even the bad and embarrassing ones! Also, I set a high tipping precedent the first time she cut my hair, and now can never deviate without feeling like a cheap-ass.

Okay, I'm getting older and I am easily confused, but I'm trying to understand this. You say Debra cuts your hair and you see her every day, yet you get your hair "buzzed" every 6 weeks.
