Show Me The Powerchild

Picking up from Seo's post here in the 2017 Guess Who... Thread:

On an unrelated note, I almost bought that SINGLES re-released soundtrack on vinyl, too, but half of the bonus stuff comes on CD. What the crap?

I was a little freaked out to come home from work to find that this was delivered today when it's official release date is tomorrow. I immediately put it on, even though I have already listened to it once today. BTW, the vinyl is just the original release (but a 2-disc 180g version). All of the bonus stuff is on an included CD.

Not to get too sidetracked, but this is a pretty great album. I feel it documents some of the better aspects of the "grunge" genre. It holds up pretty well...likely because it was released just as the explosion was happening and not after. All Seattle bands save Smashing Pumpkins (one of their best tracks, too) and Paul Westerberg. Who doesn't like a little Westerberg with their grunge? Even with the sad circumstances for putting it on, I enjoyed the couple of listens to it.

I've always loved that soundtrack (and that Westerberg song is so effing catchy), but couldn't understand why the bonus stuff was on a CD. Aside from this laptop on my work desk, I'm a CD-free household and the one in the car is never used. Just upgraded to a pretty nice turntable/speakers at home and love listening to music again this way. I'm totally hijacking this death thread, but what kinda deck do you have? Mine is this guy -> http://www.fluance.com/rt81-high-fideli ... ond-needle

My wife got me a Thorens TD-115 two Christmases ago. I had gone a little while without a turntable thinking that I wouldn't want to put another collection of music together again (especially after already going through two vinyl phases and since everything is on the web now), but I very much enjoy collecting tangible music.

I have it hooked up to a Yamaha R-S300BL receiver through (my pride and joy(outside my daughter)): a pair of Modaunt Aviano 6s*.

*none of my actual equipment pictured...but that's how it looks.

Others should feel free to show off or tell how they listen to music. It's been a year or two since we last polled.

Re: Show Me The Powerchild

Very nice setup! Disappointed the fancy white couch isn't yours! I was trying to get mine to sound good on a strict budget, but I wish I'd splurged for more heavy-hitting speakers.

The fluance turntable has a nice pre-amp, so I went with these Edifier R1280T speakers for $100:

Crisp and surprisingly nice low-end still. They're just bookshelf speakers, though, and when it's at max volume, I wish I could still pump it up louder.

Someone just gave the latest Ryan Adams record "Prisoner" on vinyl, and the first track ("Do You Still Love Me?") opens with droning organ that's met with crunchy guitar and it sounds great with the volume cranked! It'd forgotten how rich music can sound not coming out of shitty laptop or car speakers.

If anyone is looking to jump back in the record player game without going broke, the Fluance was a last-second decision I made over an Audio Technica deck and I couldn't be happier. Belt driven like Monk's with a balanced tone arm, and the walnut finish is super nice. Don't buy one of those record players in a cute baby blue suitcase!

In the vinyl revival, I've become a sucker for pre-sale bundles (pre-order NOW!!!! and get this slipmat or t-shirt or baseball cap or whatever). As the hobby isn't cheap, I've tried to limit my purchases to stuff not on streaming services.

FWIW - Drag City Records (Bill Callahan, Bonnie Prince Billy) does not yet participate in Spotify, Apple Music, etc., and their records are for the most part $18 + free shipping, I've hit them up a couple times already. Hard to find labels that don't charge like $6/pop shipping.

Re: Show Me The Powerchild

The suitcase player was probably my favorite turntable ever. I lost the turntable 20 years ago when I moved to NYC. Have a nice Denon receiver just sitting there as the speakers & cd player have been disconnected. More recently junked the shelf where the CDs used to reside and sleeved all the CDs in plastic sheets in a notebook. Threw away all the jewel cases and most of the art. Many years ago reduced 2 big boxes of records to one which sit there on a top shelf in the closet.

We are all streaming on Sonos now, now have the TV sound bar plus one in the living room, kitchen and bathroom. Bedroom next. Love it especially since Wifey Bucket in the kitchen/bathroom had taken to streaming through her phone, worst sound since my transistor radio.

This is specifically the suitcase one I meant ->

My bro got it for my niece and it sounded shitty, had a flimsy arm and every record sounded warbly, hissy, and off-pitch. But it's super cute!

You ever pull those CDs out for anything? Before I moved I gave away thousands of CDs and kept maybe 50, and haven't opened that box once.

These 35-year-old 200W dinosaurs are in my garage loft. Between the 15"
woofers and them being in a contained space the bass is pretty cool. They
really rock the rafters after all these years. (see what I did there?)

I try to limit my vinyl collection to my all-time favorite albums. I'll also typically buy vinyl if a band at a club has some at their merch table.

I subscribe to (but rarely order from) The Edit, which is a service that will text you a deal on a different album each day. They try to tailor their selections to your taste, so every once in a while they'll text me an album that I don't see in local stores that I jump on. Replying "YES" to the text orders it for me. They almost make it too easy.

Re: Show Me The Powerchild

The suitcase I was thinking about was something like this. It was a 45-sized turntable (though it had 3 speed settings) and loudspeaker in one. Spun a lot of Bay City Rollers on it.
