Give me your top 20!

Sometimes we get to travel a little for work, and I was sitting with co-workers in a restaurant at the end of a long day on the road. One of them remembered that I once made her a CD of all New York songs in advance of a previous road trip.

I told them that I liked making compilation CDs back when people listened to CDs. (I still make all kinds of playlists for the iPod.) One of them said they'd like a CD of my favorite songs, figuring they'd be a little different, as I was the most senior person on the trip by about 20 years.

So, here are the songs I included. It was a fun exercise and a bit of a challenge because I didn't want to load up on a particular group. They are my favorites, but I also wanted to introduce her to some great groups.

I realized there is a story behind each of the songs contributing to their addition to the list -- a place or time or event that a song can instantly recall.

Your challenge: If you are making a CD of your 20 favorite songs, what would be on there?

1) "Time Stand Still," by Rush

Right. Only because you haven't heard them yet. So what would be on your list?

Re: Give me your top 20!

I don't even recognize most of the artists such less the songs, although my doctor does recommend 'Relient K' to me for iron deficiency, shingles, and occasional constipation.

To be used only as directed. If your heart stops beating while taking Relient K see your proctologist at once.
Side effects may include ingrown toenails, ear hair loss, and poor bullpen outings.
Don't take Relient K if you're pregnant, plan to impregnate a Kardashian, or if you voted for Trump.
Best taken on a full stomach and with large amounts of Vodka.

A couple of years ago, when I was coming up on my 50th birthday, I was going to post my fifty favorite songs in reverse order to Facebook, one each day. IIRC, Fafif did something similar back in December 2012. I ultimately decided not to subject my FB friends to that level of bandwidth gobbling. Youze guys may not be so lucky.

41Forever and I definitely have different tastes. But "Lovers' Concerto" would get an honorable mention on my list.

Re: Give me your top 20!

41 delving heavily on the christian rock bands (Newsboys, Reliant K, Switchfoot, Jars of Clay, Mathew West, and & Casting Crowns). Back in the old days, before music went digital, I purchased a lot of CDs. I had several christian bands that were among my favorites groups (Jars of Clay, Switchfoot, early Newsboys, late DC Talk and Third Day) at the time. Interestingly, the songs you chose for many of those groups would not be my favorite selection from each of them.

I have lost touch with most new music in the last few years. Most new music I have heard in recent years doesn't impress me much, so I tend to listen to Sirius in the car and my digital library on occasion.

The albums from Switchfoot and Relient K issued last year were really good! And they were touring together, too. It was one of the best shows I've seen in years. Definitely recommend you check them out!

Re: Give me your top 20!

man, this is just so arbitrary.
so i made up some arbitrary rules for myself to narrow the field, as follows:

* Only songs since the advent of R&R (mid-50s on);
* English-language songs only;
* no more than 1 song from any artist; and
* no showtunes or soundtrack songs - those are separate lists by themselves.

so here, in no particular order, are 20 of my favorite songs (with no claim made as to their "greatness"):

1) Hallelujah - Leonard Cohen
2) Pligrim:Chapter 33 - Kris Kristofferson
3) Tangled Up in Blue - Dylan
4) Cathedral - CSN
5) Unchained Melody - Righteous Bros
6) I Believe (when i fall in love) - Stevie Wonder
7) Hey Jude - Beatles
8) Piano Man - B.Joel
9) Thunder Road - Springsteen
10) Tubthumping -
11) I'm Gonna Be Strong - C.Lauper
12) The End - Doors
13) Skating Away - Tull
14) Stand By Me
15) Living on a thin line - Kinks
16) Bat out of Hell - Meatloaf
17) Wish You were Here - Pink Floyd
18) Bohemian Rapsody - Queen
19) Once in a lifetime - Talking Heads
20) Love Reign O'er Me - Who

Since the songs on my top 20 would have to last me, they would have to satisfy all of my emotions. They would have to make me want to laugh, cry, dance, sing along or just listen. I know there of some of my favorites that I missed or omitted, but if I have to live with only 20, they are, in no particular order:

Michelle – The Beatles
Madeira, M'Dear – The Limelighters
Alone – Heart
September – Earth, Wind and Fire
I'll Stand By You – The Pretenders
If You Would Leave Me Now – Chicago
Smooth Criminal – Michael Jackson
Hotel California – The Eagles

*One day I will tell my grandchildren that I sang My Girl with the Temptations.

Right? I'm like Whitman, musically. I am large, I contain multitudes.

Top 20 rainy day driving songs, or songs featuring vocoder? Maybe. Top 20 early-R.E.M., or Queens hip-hop, or Def Jux singles... more like it. This? I can't. Not without a sabbatical or something.

Yeah, I know. I'm also large and contain multitudes. But I've been eating cleaner lately and running more, so I'm less large than I was.

And I didn't overthink this. On another day, I could easily come up with 20 others. Well, "Famous Blue Raincoat" would be on any list I could come up with, so maybe 19 others. No repeat artists, only pieces that could be considered part of the rock/funk/folk/indie/post-1950 genres.

Famous Blue Raincoat - Leonard Cohen
White Freightliner Blues - Townes Van Zandt

The Littlest Birds - Be Good Tanyas

Copperhead Road - Steve Earle
Entre Lajeunesse et La Sagesse - Kate and Anna McGarrigle

Redemption Song - Bob Marley and the Wailers
Saint Mary of the Woods - James McMurtry
[youtube:y4ts9jf0]fQ5PEmJFI30[/youtube:y4ts9jf0]

Wrong 'Em Boyo - The Clash
Pomps and Pride - Toots and the Maytals
Be Thankful for What You Got - Curtis Mayfield
Big Sky Country - Chris Whitley
St. Dominic's Preview - Van Morrison

Highway 61 Revisited - Bob Dylan
Meet de Boys on de Battlefront - Wild Tchoupitoulas
Tequila - The Champs
Folsom Prison Blues - Johnny Cash
Ana Ng - They Might Be Giants
The Three Great Alabama Icons - Drive By Truckers
Landed - Ben Folds Five

Nice choice. This is one of those simplistic, 2-1/2 minute long, pop gems that I was always a sucker for.
The timing (1965) and sound made it seem like something straight out of the classic British Invasion catalog, but the BB's were actually a San Francisco area band just prior to that area going
all psychedelic and acidy.

Produced by SF-area DJ/Producer Sylvester Stewart, aka: Sly Stone

Till the video cuts out suddenly anyway. The "Cold Baloney" bit goes on another 12 minutes.

Re: Give me your top 20!

"Take the A Train"- Duke Ellington brings back memories.

I lived at the last stop (207th and Broadway) for the first 13 years of my life.

"Brooklyn" and "Daddy Don't Live in that New York City No More" - Steely Dan
"The Only Living Boy in New York" - Simon and Garfunkel

Re: Give me your top 20!

Underrated (and likely somewhere in my top 10: "New York, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down," LCD Soundsystem
[youtube:zteqsxnq]eohHwsplvY[/youtube:zteqsxnq]

Also thus far neglected:

"Autumn in New York," Billie (or Ella, or Frank)
"Rhapsody in Blue" (I mean, GUYS)
"Walk on the Wild Side" (GUYS)
"Chelsea Hotel No. 2," Leonard Cohen
"M79," Vampire Weekend
"Across 110th Street," Bobby Womack
"South Bronx," Boogie Down Productions
"The Bridge" MC Shan
"Downtown Train," Tom Waits (GUUUUUYS)
"Harlem Shuffle," BOB AND EARL (it ain't a Stones song)
"My Metrocard," Le Tigre (a personal fave)
"New York State of Mind," Nas (cancel the other one not just for its MFYing, but its nonsensical dangling preposition right there in the f"cking hook)

Also, as much as I do love seedy Ramones, give me "Rockaway Beach" over "53rd and 3rd," all day, ay day

All great selections. And many clearing up embarrassing oversights. We get to a Taylor Fucking Swift song before definitive Ramones and Lou Reed songs? That shit ain't right.

Irish Category:
"The Streets of New York" — The Wolfe Tones and everybody else
"Fairy Tale of New York" — The Pogues
"When New York Was Irish" — Celtic Thunder
"Rockin' the Bronx" — Black 47
"Forty Shades of Blue" — Black 47

Plus NO!

SLEEP!

'TIL BROOKLYN![/bigpurple]

Re: Give me your top 20!

If you wanna get right to the NYC part, it begins at the 3:09 mark. This stuff is great and some of it's still so embedded in my memory that more than half a lifetime later, I can still anticipate the next song segment coming up.

Re: Give me your top 20!

The Taylor Swift song is really good.

Ramones were a clear oversight. Didn't realize Downtown Train was a New York song. That's the one covered by Seger and Stewart?

I didn't see John Franco's signature song, "Boy from NYC" by the Manhattan Transfer on the list.

And Patty Smythe and Mary Chapin-Carpenter, and presumably numerous others, including me in many a shower. It's explicitly set on a train to Brooklyn. Notable that none of the many high profile versions are by New York-based (or -associated) artists.

The downtown trains are full with all those Brooklyn girls
they try so hard to break out of their little worlds ....
Will I see you tonight,
on a downtown train?
