Conforto and the other guys: All-Star Game IGT

Starting this one a little late, but Conforto hasn't entered the game yet.

Some early musings:

The salute to the Latino Hall of Famers was nice, with former Mets Pedro and Roberto Alomar in there. Good to see the Clementes.

I like the patches with the number of All-Star Games on them. I think Kershaw's 7 is the highest I've seen so far. Sale has 6.

Justin Turner looks ridiculous.

Mizzou-alum Scherzer tells Wonderboy to grab some pine.

Maybe we should have kept Murphy.

Still can't get used to the Astros being in the Lesser League.

And the AL gets the first run when a ball drops between three Nationals.

Well the game is official now that we've had the traditional upcoming FOX show plug with the actors in the prime seats.
Now the question is, how quickly after the cameo did the actors abandon those seats and go hit The Clevelander?

I believe the trivia answer is Tony Perez (extra inning HR in the 1967 ASG)

Conforto sighting!

For the first time since 2015, a Mets player is appearing in the game! (Yes, Terry, I'm still pissed about last year.)

I still dislike Molina. But he does have his moments.

Nah, still hate him. That's a stupid neck tattoo, too.

Joe Buck talking about the new, not-counting game having intensity -- moments after Cano stopped to take a photo with Joe West.

I particularly like how he couldn't be bothered to ask Brad Mills if he ever considered that what fans really want is to see the best players for the whole game instead of the parade of substitutions.

Still don't understand why it is some article of faith that everyone wants that.

I kind of like the parade of substitutions. Gives everyone their minute in the sun.

The AL is out of position players -- and it's only the seventh inning.

Would be great to pinch run with the winning run on first...oh, wait, the stupid substitutions preclude strategy late in the game when it matters most. Idiots.

It's like they never learn.

All lefties to face Miller. No pinch runner for Molina. Managerial malpractice by Maddon by doing all of those stupid substitutions.

You can't PR for the catcher because they'd have nobody else to catch.

Which is why one never replaces their starting catcher in the 5th inning for no good reason!

Re: Conforto and the other guys: All-Star Game IGT

I'm telling you, if you play three All-Star games during Mid-Season Baseball Week, you get the potential for three good games instead of one excruciating one. No forced substitutions—and no farcical endings—because the players who don't appear in game one will start in game two.

Yeah, but then you'll get people complaining that the game 2 All Stars aren't as All Starry as the game 1 All Stars.

My magic elixir is to play the ASG in April, before the start of the regular season. It would be a teaser for the new season. You could base the ballot on the entire prior year, post-season and all, so you wouldn't have some schlub making the game because he happened to get hot in May. Whatever puzzles are caused because players change leagues during the off season can be finessed, particularly now that the league got wise and decided not to make the game count anymore. You could take a few days off after the game so that the pitchers are ready for Opening Day if needed. It beats having a black hole in the middle of July.

It would screw over northern cities, as it would be really challenging to schedule an April ASG in an outdoor ballpark anywhere in New England or the Midwest. It seems like about half the early April games here in Cleveland get postponed because of weather.

In any event, it's an exhibition. I'm fine with all the substitutions. I'm fine with the NL not winning. I don't care who wins. The purpose is to showcase the best players from each league. It's not intended to be a good game.

Then again, I haven't watched an All-Star Game in six years or so. So, what do I know?

Yeah, but they'd be wrong. Better baseball, better showcase, better fun.

And now we have to wait until Friday, not Thursday, for baseball to resume. The extending of the ASG break by a full day also gets me all cheesed up.

The season will be 4 days longer next year, so even more off-days.

I haven't watched the all star game since Harmon Killebrew did his season ending split.
