Duda Right Thing

Lucas Duda has a nearly .900 OPS with 12 HR's. Is a solid fielder at 1B, and is 31 years old. Other than Jay Bruce (or maybe Addison Reed) will bring back the largest bounty at the trade deadline.

I think you have to try trading him and see what you have in Dom Smith for the second half. I guess if you're not happy with Smith, you can consider bringing him back, or signing/trading for another 1B.

The alternative is to keep him, offer arbitration, and either take the draft pick or keep him for another year.

You also wonder what type of deal a 32 year old Duda gets on the open market. Maybe he only gets a 3 year deal.

Don't really know the answer to this one. It's one of the tough choices you have to make over the next few months. If I'm Sandy, I trade him then re-sign him. We are going to need power bats next year.

Re: Duda Right Thing

The thing about Duda, though, is that he's chronically underrated--his perceived value is way below his actual value. Which is great when he's on your team, but it means you won't get a good return for him in a trade. It's a bind.

A quick glance at the contenders, though, and there's nobody who *needs* a Duda-type right now. MAYBE Boston if Mitch Moreland's foot injury lingers.

A .900 OPS speaks for itself, though, don't it? I mean, this isn't FAN yahoos you need to convince. You just need to convince one MLB GM from a contender that needs a first-sacker (or perhaps a DH).

I'm not advocatin', but maybe the Sox want to make an improvement on Hanley Ramirez or whoever is DH-ing for them. I imagine they're capable of accurately evaluating him.

I don't think there's going to be a draft pick. The Mets aren't going to want to take the risk of Duda accepting an $18 million contract.

They might know what he's worth. I'm not sure the Mets front office does.

The team is going to have to make a decision -- maybe in the next six weeks, definitely in the next six months -- on Duda OR Smith. Unless of course they opt for 'Neither'.
Both certainly isn't an option since both are LH bats who play nowhere other than 1B, and Not Yet on Smith only works if Duda agrees on a one-year only contract at the age of 32 on the
brink of his first shot at FA-gency. One could argue that Walker chose that exact route last year although he was a year younger, plays a less easily filled position, and the team had no obvious
replacement behind him.

Greg Bird is constantly hurt, Chris Carter suxxx, and Matt Holiday needs to DH.
Duda for OF prospect Clint Frazier. You've got an hour to get back to us Cashman.

That's right. Forgot they were contenders.
