Asdrubal Cabrera is a Dickhead

They should just sit him and play Cecchini the rest of the way.

Re: Asdrubal Cabrera is a Dickhead

He wants to play SS because that's his best position and if the Mets don't exercise his option he needs to show other teams that he can play SS. BUT, he's been bad at SS and playing 2B and/or 3B shows versatility. And yapping never helps your stock. Also: saying that you'll play anywhere but only if the Mets exercise your option for next year doesn't show you to be a team player. So shuddup.

Re: Asdrubal Cabrera is a Dickhead

It's funny how many situations come up over and over again in baseball. In 2003 Rey Sanchez was the veteran SS whom everyone knew would hold off that up-and-coming kid for only so long. Like this year, the Mets/media/fans dreamed up a scenario where the veteran selflessly makes way for his replacement, maybe even shows him the ropes, only to discover an unexpected level of anxiety in the vet that played out in stupid behavior.

I don't think Cabrera is an asshole -- just a prideful jock whose "rage against the dying of the light" took on a foolish form. The guy is less than a year from having been one of the league's most productive SSs and a popular team leader who some fans imagined could one day *manage* the club. There's a lso a little Rickey Henderson 2001 in this deal in that Cabrera is insulted by the club's handling of his contract and its apparently affecting his play.

In the meantime if it plays out the way it looks now, Reyes becomes the new Rey Sanchez. I think he too is uncomfortable confronting his diminishing skills and that maybe part of the move to SS is an acknowledges that "versatile veteran utility guy" isn't a role that suits his game either.

Re: Asdrubal Cabrera is a Dickhead

You understand that maybe the club c/should have given him a better heads-up on this, but he's the one who made the whole thing a lot worse by yapping to the press about how pissed off he was over it.

What he wants (and has apparently asked about in the past) is for the Mets to pick up the option they have on him for 2018. Players like to look for any leverage they might have (like by waiving
a No-Trade clause) to pressure clubs into more guaranteed money and it sounds like he saw this as an opportunity to make a deal: I'll agree to the switch if you agree to the option. Problem is
that, between his injuries, his season, his advancing age, and Rosario in his mirror, he's not exactly in a strong bargaining position and then started pouting when his ploy didn't work.

In the end I don't know that he was ever more than a 50/50 bet to picked up anyway and he wasn't going to be the 2018 SS even if he did, all of which makes his protests seem out of proportion
to forced move. And while sitting him now out of spite or as a version of punishment for yapping doesn't really do anyone any good, the fact that neither he nor the team is having the year they
envisioned means that the time he was likely to become an ex-NYM had already jumped up from October to July and last night's soap opera will be largely irrelevant as to either the reason or
the timing in that.

Seriously. I thought it was a "taken out of context" thing, but he was pretty explicit. Don't let your league-leading error total hit you in the ass on the way out, friend.

You forgot the stupid in "Asdrubal Cabrera is a Stupid Dickhead." Because whether the aim is to get traded to a better team situation or to make the Mets pick up your option, opening your mouth at this point doesn't exactly get you closer to either, does it?

Re: Asdrubal Cabrera is a Dickhead

The weird thing to me is that this is the sort of thing that Terry usually over-executes. Usually, before he asks a veteran to switch positions even as an occasional Sunday alternative, he does weeks (or months) of deflecting the media, hand-holding, fluffing, giving the player the chance to work out at the new spot, or even allowing him room to say no without exposing him.

Here, Terry just decided willy-nilly to move a guy, which certainly is his right, as out of (recent) character as it might seem. I guess a year and a half of working with Cabrera just gave him the notion that that Asdrubal might have had it in him to be big about it. But it's been a frustrating season for everybody, and sometimes the pressure valves blow in funny places. #RuntheBasesPuig

You'd think, right? Call Sandy a douchebag behind closed doors and make your demands, but tell him "I'll go out there, say the right things, and be a team guy on this, but you promise me you'll try to get me the hell out of here."

Re: Asdrubal Cabrera is a Dickhead

Well, if they HAD been thinking about picking up his option, they won't be now. He also diminished what trade value he had. So, a lose-lose for all concerned.

He should have taken a page from Mike Cameron, who made it clear to Sandy that he didn't want to return the next year, but who never mentioned it until after he was traded.

Re: Asdrubal Cabrera is a Dickhead

Eh, he overreacted, and what's going on inside the foul lines isn't keeping people's attention. Maybe there was a lapse in diplomacy somewhere, but Cabrera's performance at short is such that he's more likely to draw interest from a contender looking for a second baseman. And his agent should know that, even if he doesn't. This will blow over, and Cabrera wasn't a good bet to still be a Met in August anyway.

Re: Asdrubal Cabrera is a Dickhead

On the flip side of this issue, Asdrubal has barely made an out since moving over to that side of 2B (5 hits in 8 ABs) so if he keeps this up we may be able to sell it to other teams at trading time as
a cause-and-effect kind of thing.

Worth noting that a week from today is ASDRUBAL CABRERA BOBBLEHEAD DAY.

Is it true that every day is Wilmer Flores BOBBLE day?

I hat to pick on Wilmer during a game where he's had two big hits and nary an error (so far anyway) but the set up was too good to pass up

I wasn't concurring with the thread title but I don't know what he's gaining from "going public" with his beef. It's not going to make him more marketable. Playing as well as he has these 2 days will.

Yeah I saw them advertise that and Sandy probably told him "dude - shut up, you need to stay here another week"

The Cabby situation reminds me of Matsui playing SS and Reyes moving. I don't remember Reyes complaining.

Cabby had a day of unfiltered Latino hubris regarding the move. I will call it Ozzie Guillen hubris.

G-Fafif's column shows that Asdrubal is playing three-dimensional chess while the rest of the organization is playing checkers.

Re: Asdrubal Cabrera is a Dickhead

In short, Cabrera just turned down an opportunity to look like a gallant veteran on a sinking ship, all while demonstrating versatility at a position that masks his biggest defensive flaw. Twice (he pulled this behind closed doors re: third earlier).

Still, don't get me wrong-- the Mets' handling of this was-- surprise!-- pretty damn dumb, too. It's funny that our discussion of this is so player-focused. I suspect it's because we expect these sorts of things from Team Ill-Communication, and Assdrubbin' caught us off-guard?

Re: Asdrubal Cabrera is a Dickhead

“I always want to be here,” Cabrera told The Post after the Mets beat the Marlins, 8-0, on Wednesday night at Marlins Park.
“This is a great team. In that moment when I said that, [u:24sftxxa]I wasn’t saying I want to get traded[/u:24sftxxa]. I was just saying it didn’t seem like they had a plan for me. … If they’ve got a plan,
they should tell me.”

[u:24sftxxa]I wasn’t saying I want to get traded[/u:24sftxxa] -- Uh, yeah, you pretty much were. In fact I think there's a quote with you saying exactly that on film.
Not that I specifically mind on that sort of stuff. It's spur of the moment shit and you were upset, I understand that and always suspected that it was a soon to be back-walked comment.
But you DID say that you asked your agent to get you outta there so let's not pretend otherwise.
