Oh boy, my hottest umpiring button. Hernandez is absolutely the most egotistical and incompetent person to ever wear an umpire's uniform that I have witnessed in my over 60 years of watching baseball. Two others may have been ranked lower by the players, but when combined with Hernandez' in-your-face- style, denying any and all criticism, he slithers below them. His low performance ratings are richly deserved. Later

He's right that Torre doesn't think much of him. That's not a strong basis for a lawsuit. If it is, he's going to be a very rich man, seeing as it is that Torre is far from alone.

Hey, most MLBers seem to think he's a big pile of mierda, too, and a significant number of them have much deeper pockets than Torre does. Why not go angling there, s'long as his ass is going fishing?

If he is ranked third lowest by the players, I'd guess a number of players who rated him that badly share his ethnicity.

He didn't sue Torre. Plus, no player has a deeper pocket than MLB itself.
There is, I suppose, an alternate explanation for what Hernandez is alleging is discrimination, which is that MLB may well have been doing a crappy job of evaluating umpires prior to 2011.

We just passed the 19th anniversary of the day Angel Hernandez became Angel Hernandez and, to a certain extent, the day Turner Field became Turner Field, the effing play at the plate Hernandez probably got wrong to end an extra-inning debacle and wrong-way sweep by the Braves of the Mets in Atlanta. That was Bobby V and Johnny F going ballistic over what the manager called Michael Tucker's "lousy, illegal slide" into Mike Piazza's lap. For Mike's part, he believed Hernandez made a safe call so he could get going on his All-Star break vacation not one minute later.

Angel Hernandez is suing MLB claiming racial discrimination is the reason he hasn't been promoted. No, jackass, you havent been promoted because YOU FUCKING SUCK and you deserve to be fired and replaced by a more competent umpire.

Does the All-Star Game still determine World Series home field advantage? Or did they do away with that silliness? I seem to think that's been eliminated, but I'm not sure.

Some years ago, Deadspin did a profile on each umpire, listing his proclivities and background and such. Among the profile attributes, they included a category for "where he's hated." This was before replay review, so any umpire with a few years on his record was going to have made enemies with one city or another over an unappealable call. Most guys had one or two cities. The vets had three.

When an ump with the juice of Joe West gets a three-game suspension for the relatively tame comments of calling Adrian Beltre baseball's biggest complainer, I understand the umps being pissy that Kinsler didn't get the thumb after a cold and clinical rip of Hernandez, even if most every thing he said was dead on.

I was surprised that Kinsler's penalty was to small, especially after he said he didn't care if he got fined. I wonder if the league was sending a message to Hernandez.
