While the present is currently dry, the higher minor leagues aren't a place with a depth of either stars, once one looks past the Super Two of Rosario and Smith. I'm sure some quality players will emerge, but hard-case records in Vegas, St. Lucie, and Brooklyn are hard to ignore. Luckily, along with some productivity in Bingo and Columbia, the lowest minor leagues are impressing! The Mets of Gulf Coast League (along with both of their cousin teams in the DSL are emerging as teams to beat. Unlike the juggernauts in the Caribbean, the stars of this thread, the GCL Mets, are but 5-7, but just you wait and see.
Yesterday, for instance, the Baby Mets smashed the Infant Astros. I mean they absolutely punched them in the face, to the tune of a 10-3 victory, pounding out 15 hits, five for extra bases. Shortstop and recent second-round pick Mark Vientos socked his first career homer. Homeruns are rare in the GCL, even in 2017, so you savor those. You just savor them. Aneury Olivo, who is punching below his weight as the Mets bounce him between the FSL and the GCL, picked up the win with 5 2/3 strong innings.
Emerging as an unstoppable force for the G-Mets is centerfielder Guillermo Grenadillo. "The Little Bomb" is strafing the league with an eye-popping stat line of .426 / .460 / .574 // 1.034. Safe in four of his five stolen-base attempts, too.
Anything can happen in a short amount of time. I hear you saying that. I can literally hear you. But Gilly is 50 plate appearances into his season. It's a pattern at this point. And it's a pattern being repeated in kind by thirdbaseman Hansel Moreno. Hansel is joining Guillermo in the the 400 Club with a line of .408 / .455 / .510 // .965 while he's 54 appearances into his season. Look out, Robles, there's another Hansel on the way.
Starting pitcher Daison Acosta has done everything but be lucky, his 0-2 record belied by his Oroscovian 1.47 ERA over 18 1/3 innings, striking out 16 and walking only three. His effectiveness is nearly matched by his rotation mate Jaison Vilera who has allowed only two runs in his first 11 innings (1.64 ERA), striking out 10 and walking one.
Two innings into his season is recent acquisition catcher Matthew Foley. Foley is notable in that he's been sent to labor in the GCL despite already being on his third organization. Foley was drafted in 2015 by the Marlins and has since been released by them as well as Atlanta, before joining the Mets in his attempt to Bruce Chen his way through the division.
The G-Mets were idle tonight, living in solidarity with their big league brethren. Many players have explicitly committed to spending their off day in search of a face.
