Rosenthal, by the way, is out of work just at the time of year when he becomes is the hardest working baseball reporter since pre-stroke Peter Gammons.

Lefty Specialist Jul 13 2017 08:00 PM Re: July Deadline Dealios of 2017 |
I actually found Rosenthal's writing better than his in-person irrelevancies. I don't care who you're wearing that ugly bow-tie for, dude.
|
Frayed Knot Jul 13 2017 09:04 PM Re: July Deadline Dealios of 2017 |
Sideline reporters are, IMO, virtually always irrelevant so I don't hang that particular fault on Rosenthal. It's more the fault of the ingrained thinking that convinces networks they're required to have one.

Frayed Knot Jul 14 2017 01:33 PM Re: July Deadline Dealios of 2017 |

Actually it turns out that Quintana is under a long-term contract with team options for both 2019 & 2020 so the Cubs can get up to 3-1/2 years of use out of him at reasonable rates: $8.5 / $10.5 / $11.5 for 2018/19/20 So now the question remains whether he's going to be the 3.5 - 5.0 WAR/year pitcher he was from 2013-16 or the 0.9 WAR guy he is this year.

It wouldn't surprise me if you get very little pageviews/clicks on the few minutes of early news on a trade versus the yelling (or in a more sane world, discussion) about it 20 minutes later.

For an [u:860aulv1]UN[/u:860aulv1]-deal in July comes news that the BoSox have DFA'd Pablo Sandoval 2-1/2 seasons into his 5 year/$95 million deal.
|
Edgy MD Jul 14 2017 04:50 PM Re: July Deadline Dealios of 2017 |
Putting aside re-signing deals (*cough* Wright *cough*), I like the B.J. Upton deal for free agent futility, if only because the Braves had to throw in Craig Kimbrel to get rid of him.
|
Frayed Knot Jul 14 2017 05:13 PM Re: July Deadline Dealios of 2017 |
And unlike most Atlanta deals, even when they seem to be just dumping salary, they didn't get much useful back in that trade.

I think they need a clubhouse leader type like Cabrera. And Granderson. And Duda. And Harvey.
|
Frayed Knot Jul 19 2017 12:55 AM Re: July Deadline Dealios of 2017 |
Yeah I can't see Houston panicking here, especially with Correa at least slated to be back by early-mid-September.

MFYs just made another "dealio" getting Jamie Garcia, most recently of the Twins who had him for just one start after getting him from ATL. MIN apparently traded a prospect to ATL and then received a better prospect from the MFYs.

Jonathan Lucroy to Colorado from Texas which is where he was dealt at this time last year.

So the Twins trade for pitching, then lose six of seven (the one game they won was the one Garcia started) and so decide that they're out of it to the point where they trade that pitching to one of the teams they could potentially be fighting against for the WC. And you folks thought the AJ Ramos deal was strange! Be interesting for Twins fans to track the future progress of the one prospect they sent to Atlanta to get Garcia vs the two they got back from the Skanks since the net effect of this deal is a two for one swap of minor leaguers.
|
Frayed Knot Jul 31 2017 06:06 PM Re: July Deadline Dealios of 2017 |
Francisco Liriano, who's been real good, real bad, and everywhere in between in his career since first showing up with the Twins in 2005, is moving from the Blue Jays to the Astros who are expected to use him out of the bullpen.

Frayed Knot Jul 31 2017 08:46 PM Re: July Deadline Dealios of 2017 |
Actually Darvish isn't all that good this year and might wind up being the least scary LAD pitcher you could draw at the moment.

After all the lack of demand for two-month rentals, the Rangers got a nice haul -- Willie Calhoun is the #4 second base prospect in baseball and he's ready to play in the show right now.

He did alright against the Mets back in June, though. He actually did better than alright mostly, giving up only three hits in 7 1/3. Fortunately for the Mets, two of those hits were bombs by Jay Bruce, and they won in the ninth on a Matt Bush error, and a safe call that stood after a challenge and review.
